The best fitness watch for a child depends on whether you want a simple activity record or a connected watch with location and communication features. Garmin vívofit jr. 3 is an activity-first tracker; Fitbit Ace LTE combines movement games with parent-managed GPS and communications, but requires an Ace Pass and is limited to supported U.S. coverage. Neither product’s feature list establishes clinical-grade monitoring or comparative tracking accuracy.
Choose by the job you need the watch to do
- To encourage everyday movement: look for steps, activity time, and goals, or movement rewards that appeal to the child. Garmin describes the vívofit jr. 3 as a kids’ fitness tracker. Fitbit Ace LTE uses games and goals to reward activity.

App-paired features require a compatible parent smartphone running Garmin Jr. The cited evidence does not establish GPS or calling on this model, so do not choose it on the assumption that it provides connected safety features. Garmin’s Garmin Jr. privacy policy says syncing a child’s device may upload its model and unit ID, settings, and activity information including chores, rewards, steps, distance, activity time, and sleep. Location may be included with a GPS-enabled device. The policy also says that display text and step totals may be visible to participants in a Toe-to-Toe challenge; an anonymous display option is available. These are Garmin’s disclosures, not an independent privacy audit.

Fitbit Ace LTE: movement games plus connected features
Google describes Ace LTE as a smartwatch where games reward movement goals. Parents can manage contacts, see location, and enable school-time settings that mute notifications and restrict games. Its LTE features—including calling, messaging, and location sharing—require an Ace Pass monthly or annual plan. Google’s product page says coverage is limited to the United States excluding Alaska and U.S. territories; check current plan prices, terms, and eligibility before purchase.

Google’s privacy information lists child account information, health and wellness data such as step count and heart rate, location, permitted contacts, call and message logs when those features are used, and device information. Payment method and transaction data apply when payment features are used. The categories vary with age and enabled features, so review the current privacy page and account controls rather than assuming the device handles activity data alone.
Check fit, routines, and family rules before buying
- Wrist fit and willingness to wear it: have the child try the watch if possible. A feature set is of little use if the device is uncomfortable or routinely left off.
- Charging and replacement: consider whether the family prefers a replaceable battery or can keep up with regular recharging. Garmin’s stated up-to-one-year figure is a manufacturer estimate for the listed battery; it is not a guarantee of identical use in every household.
- School expectations: check school rules about watches, notifications, games, cameras, and messaging. Ace LTE’s school-time setting can mute notifications and restrict games, but families should confirm the setting meets their needs.
- Water and wear: match water-resistance claims to the activities the child does, and check the current manufacturer documentation for the exact model and local edition.
- Phone and service compatibility: verify the parent’s phone supports the required app and that any connected service works where the child will use it.
What “monitoring” can and cannot tell you
Steps, activity time, goals, and heart-rate data are consumer-facing measurements, not proof of medical-grade monitoring. The manufacturer descriptions cited here do not establish clinical accuracy, nor do they provide an independent head-to-head accuracy comparison. Use a watch to support routines or communication, not to diagnose a condition or make a medical decision.

For a connected watch, decide what location and communication access is appropriate for your child. Review which family members can see location, which contacts are permitted, what communication history is processed, and how to manage or delete account data. Read the current manufacturer privacy disclosures and app settings before activation.
