The safest approach is active guidance, not secret surveillance or a total ban. Ask what your child uses a chatbot for, explain that it predicts text rather than understanding a person, protect identifying information, set age-appropriate limits, and keep trusted people involved. If a child mentions self-harm, suicide, abuse, imminent danger or instructions for a dangerous act, stay with them and contact a licensed mental-health professional or emergency service; do not leave the crisis to a chatbot.
Why chatbot advice needs adult context
Children and teenagers use chatbots for homework, creativity, information, emotional support and relationship-like conversation. A chatbot can sound warm, confident and available at any hour, which may make it feel private and nonjudgmental. That tone is not evidence that the system understands the child or can keep them safe.
Text prediction is not human understanding
Generative chatbots produce likely next words from patterns in their training and the current conversation. They do not have a clinician’s assessment of a child’s history, mood, surroundings or immediate risk. They can invent facts, reflect bias, miss crucial context and sound certain when they are wrong. They may also mirror or validate an unsafe idea instead of challenging it.

Distress is a documented weak point
UNICEF reports that many chatbots are not designed to detect or respond appropriately to distress. The American Psychological Association (APA) says generative-AI wellness products have limited evidence, expert input, regulation and post-market monitoring. APA has documented unsafe interactions involving self-harm, suicide, substance use, eating disorders, aggression and delusional thinking. Treat advice about mental health, relationships, sexual health, medicine, law, money or physical safety as a prompt to involve a qualified adult or professional, not as a final answer.

What the usage numbers do—and do not—show
A 2025 Common Sense Media study found that one-third of teens had chosen AI companions over people for serious conversations and one-quarter had shared personal information with those platforms. These are findings from that study, not a universal estimate of every teenager’s behavior. They do show why families should discuss emotional reliance and privacy before a problem appears.
Start with curiosity instead of punishment
Choose a calm moment rather than confronting a child immediately after discovering an account. Common Sense Media recommends judgment-free conversations and clear boundaries.
Ask what role the chatbot is playing
- “What do you use it for—homework, entertainment, brainstorming, friendship or emotional support?”
- “What does it do that feels helpful?”
- “Has it ever said something confusing, frightening or too personal?”
- “Would you tell me if it asked you to keep a secret or move the conversation somewhere else?”
Listen for whether the service is one tool among many or the child’s only confidant. Understanding the appeal makes it easier to set a rule the child will actually follow.

Explain the limits in plain language
Tell your child that a chatbot can be useful for ideas and explanations but can be wrong, biased or overconfident. It does not “know” them, feel concern or take responsibility for consequences. Establish a family rule that a trusted adult or qualified professional verifies high-stakes advice before the child acts on it.
“Parents, caregivers, and educators must facilitate discussions about the nature of GenAI chatbots and wellness apps, how GenAI works (e.g., that the systems predict text rather than ‘understanding’ users), the risks for biased and incorrect information, and data privacy and security.”
— American Psychological Association
Protect your child’s privacy
Information children should not enter casually
- Full name, home address, school name or class details
- Passwords, authentication codes or account-recovery answers
- Precise location, daily route or schedule
- Bank, payment or other financial information
- Private photographs, especially intimate images or images of other people
- Detailed medical, mental-health, sexual or abuse-related information that could identify the child or someone else
A trusted adult should assess a service before a child enters sensitive information. “Deleting a chat” in an app does not necessarily mean every copy is immediately removed.

Check the service’s data practices together
Read the current privacy and account-control pages with your child. Look for how long conversations are retained, whether they are used to train or improve models, who they are shared with, how deletion works, whether a parent can manage the account, and what age the service requires. Prefer the maximum privacy and safety settings recommended by UNICEF, and revisit them when the service changes its terms or features.
Set boundaries that match the child and the service
Use practical defaults
- Follow the service’s stated minimum age; do not help a younger child bypass age assurance.
- Turn on available content, sexual-safety and contact protections.
- Set interaction or screen-time limits, including a no-secret, no-late-night rule when appropriate.
- Keep use in shared spaces for younger children and make it easy to show a concerning exchange.
- Schedule regular check-ins instead of demanding unrestricted access to every private conversation.
APA calls for age-appropriate privacy defaults, interaction limits and content guardrails. Rules should be proportionate: a young child may need co-use, while an older teen may need more privacy plus clear escalation rules. Revisit the agreement as the child’s age, needs and the product change.
Keep human relationships central
Pay attention to patterns, not a single long conversation. A child may need support if a chatbot becomes the only confidant, displaces sleep, school, family, friends or professional care, or leads to secrecy, rapidly increasing use or marked distress when access is interrupted. Ask what need the chatbot is meeting and help add human options—a parent, relative, school counselor, doctor, therapist, coach or trusted friend—rather than simply removing access.

How to evaluate a chatbot before allowing use
Compare services against the same questions. A polished persona or “companion” label is not a safety certification.
| Safety area | Questions for parents | Safer signs |
|---|---|---|
| Age assurance | What is the minimum age, and how is age checked? | Clear age requirements and controls that do not encourage bypassing them |
| Privacy and retention | Are chats retained, used for training, shared, or deletable? Can a parent manage settings? | Plain-language explanations, strong defaults and usable deletion controls |
| Content and grooming protection | How does the service handle sexual content, coercion, manipulation and attempts to move a child off-platform? | Effective filters, reporting paths and responses that discourage secrecy and isolation |
| Crisis response | Can it recognize distress and direct a child to human help? What happens when safeguards fail? | Clear escalation to qualified human or emergency support rather than prolonged chatbot counseling |
| Interaction limits | Can families limit time, late-night access or certain features? | Granular controls that support sleep, school and offline relationships |
| Transparency | Does the provider explain model limits, testing, incident handling and updates? | Specific, accessible information instead of claims that the system is automatically safe |
| Human support | Does the product reinforce real-world help or encourage exclusive emotional dependence? | Prompts to involve trusted adults and language that avoids presenting the bot as a person or therapist |
The Federal Trade Commission’s 2025 inquiry into seven companies shows that testing and monitoring impacts on children remain active regulatory questions. No single feature proves that a service is safe.

Act immediately if a child mentions self-harm, suicide, imminent danger, severe depression, abuse or instructions for a dangerous act.
- Stay with the child and speak calmly. Do not shame them for using the chatbot.
- Ask directly whether they are in immediate danger and whether they have a plan or access to means.
- Contact a licensed mental-health professional or your local emergency service, following local procedures for urgent risk.
- Remove or secure immediate means of harm when you can do so safely, and involve another trusted adult.
- Preserve relevant messages or screenshots for the professional or emergency responder, while avoiding further chatbot “testing.”
- After the immediate risk is addressed, review privacy, access and support arrangements with the child and the professionals involved.
Do not rely on a chatbot to assess suicide risk, provide therapy, keep a secret or manage an emergency. Its response may be delayed, inappropriate or dangerously reassuring.
A simple family agreement
- Name allowed uses, such as brainstorming or explanations, and uses that always require an adult check.
- List information that stays out of chats, including identity, location, credentials, private images and sensitive health details.
- Choose limits for time, bedtime, shared-space use and contact with unknown people.
- Agree on a no-punishment reporting route for sexual content, threats, secrecy requests, self-harm talk or frightening advice.
- Set a review date and change the rules when the child’s age, circumstances or the service changes.
The goal is not to make a child prove that every chat is harmless. It is to ensure that convenience never replaces privacy judgment, human connection or professional care.
