Security researchers have documented a Windows remote-access trojan (RAT) called KGB RAT that combines ordinary cybercrime functions with deliberately frightening “fun settings.” An operator can access files and the desktop, record from a webcam or microphone, log keystrokes, recover passwords, trigger scream sounds, display jump scares and force a crash or blue-screen event.
What KGB RAT is
KGB RAT is malware sold as a service: customers pay for access to a ready-made remote-control platform rather than developing their own trojan. Group-IB’s analysis, reported in October 2026, found a Windows threat designed for surveillance, credential theft, persistence and remote control. Its unusual harassment controls appear alongside conventional criminal tooling, not as a harmless prank feature.
Reporting places the malware’s underground advertising push in late 2025. Infrastructure associated with it was traced back to January 2022, indicating that development or operation predated the later marketing campaign. Public security reporting appeared in September 2025, followed by wider promotion later that year.

Control and surveillance
- Remote desktop access lets an operator view and interact with the Windows system.
- File-management functions can browse, copy, move or delete files.
- Webcam and microphone access can expose video and audio from the device.
- A keylogger records typed input, while password-recovery functions can target credentials stored on the computer.
Persistence and evasion
Samples analyzed by researchers included mechanisms intended to survive reboots and avoid detection. Reported defenses include obfuscation, updates to the malware’s crypter, sandbox detection and attempts to disable or bypass security protections. These capabilities can make an infection harder to identify and remove than a one-off nuisance program.

Notifications, profiling and cryptocurrency theft
KGB RAT can notify an operator through the Telegram Bot API when a new device is infected. It can also profile the victim’s approximate location by querying ip-api.com. One analyzed sample contained a CryptoClipper module: when a user copied a cryptocurrency wallet address, the malware could replace it with an attacker-controlled address before the transaction was pasted.
Why the screams and jump scares matter
The malware’s “Extra” menu contains developer-labeled “fun settings.” These controls can play scream sounds, display jump-scare images and force a crash or blue-screen event. Group-IB described the combination as psychological harassment. In its words, “The harassment and psychological distress features — screamer functions, forced blue screens, and what the developers label ‘fun settings’ — are less common in RAT tooling at this capability level.”

- Fashion Design: The space aluminum alloy webcam cover features a subtle design which compliments the beautiful aesthetic of top devices
- Ultra-Thin Design: Measures only 0.023 (0.6 mm) inch thin, ensuring it does not interfere with closing your laptop or device while providing reliable camera coverage

- Simple to Use: Only need to align to the webcam, attach and press it firmly for 15 seconds. Does not interfere with web use or indicator light
The harassment does not replace data theft; it can distract or frighten a victim while the operator maintains access. A sudden scream, fake error, jump scare or forced restart is therefore more concerning when it occurs with unknown processes, disabled security tools, unexplained cursor movement, new accounts or other signs of remote control.

What to do if a Windows PC suddenly screams or crashes
A forced blue screen alone is not proof of KGB RAT; faulty drivers, failing hardware and ordinary software can also crash Windows. Treat the incident as a possible compromise when the crash or sound is unexplained, repeats, or accompanies surveillance or account-security warning signs.

- Isolate the computer. Disconnect Wi-Fi and Ethernet, or remove it from the affected network. Do not continue browsing or signing in on that device.
- Protect accounts from a separate device. Change important passwords from a known-clean phone or computer, beginning with email, financial services and password-manager accounts. Revoke active sessions where the service supports it and enable multifactor authentication.
- Preserve evidence. Photograph or record the screen, note the time and symptoms, and avoid deleting suspicious files or reinstalling Windows before a professional has had a chance to assess the system. Keep relevant security alerts and logs.
- Run a trusted, current malware-removal process. Use an up-to-date security tool with behavioral monitoring and, where available, an offline or rescue scan. If the system remains suspect, obtain help from a qualified incident-response professional or your organization’s security team.
- Check other devices and accounts. Review email sign-ins, remote-access software, cryptocurrency transactions and network activity for unauthorized changes. A business infection may require wider containment than a single PC.
Because the published reports do not provide a KGB RAT-specific cleanup recipe or confirm that any particular commercial product detects it, no single scanner should be presented as guaranteed protection. The safest response is isolation, credential protection, evidence preservation and expert assessment.

How to reduce the risk of a RAT infection
- Keep Windows, browsers and security software updated and allow security protections to remain enabled.
- Use standard user accounts for everyday work where practical, reserving administrator access for tasks that require it.
- Do not open unexpected attachments, cracked software, game cheats or “free” utilities from untrusted sources.
- Use multifactor authentication and unique passwords so a stolen password is less useful to an attacker.
- Back up important files to a protected location and test that you can restore them.
- For organizations, monitor remote-access tools, restrict unnecessary scripting and administrative privileges, and maintain an incident-response plan.
The Bottom Line
KGB RAT stands out because it pairs serious remote-access and credential-theft capabilities with screamers, jump scares and forced crashes. An unexpected incident is not conclusive proof of this malware, but it warrants immediate network isolation and a professional, up-to-date malware investigation.
