If your keyboard seems to type backwards, first identify what is actually happening: letters may appear in reverse order, a paragraph may flow from right to left, the cursor may behave unexpectedly in mixed-direction text, or the keys may produce the wrong characters. These symptoms point to different settings, and right-to-left text alone does not show that the physical keyboard is broken.

What does “typing backwards” look like?

The phrase can describe several different behaviors. Notice which one matches before changing settings:

  • Letters appear in reverse order: the characters in an English word appear in an unexpected sequence.
  • The text flows from right to left: the insertion point or paragraph begins on the right and progresses left. This can be intentional right-to-left (RTL) text direction.
  • The cursor seems to jump or move oddly: the text may contain both left-to-right and right-to-left scripts, whose visual order can be more complex than the order in which characters were entered.
  • Keys produce unexpected characters: the active keyboard input language or layout may not match the one you intend to use.

These are not interchangeable symptoms. Apple documents bidirectional text support in macOS, and Microsoft documents RTL composition in Microsoft 365; a paragraph’s direction is a text or app behavior, not evidence by itself of a physical keyboard fault. See Apple’s guide to changing text direction on Mac and Microsoft’s guide to RTL languages in Office.

Start by checking whether it happens everywhere

  1. Note the exact symptom. Check whether letters are reversed, the paragraph flows right to left, cursor behavior is unexpected, or the wrong characters appear.
  2. Try another app and text field. If the behavior occurs only in one document or app, inspect that paragraph’s or field’s direction before changing system settings. Direction can be controlled in supported apps and can depend on context.
  3. Check the active input layout. If keys produce the wrong characters, confirm that the selected keyboard layout is the intended one. Windows treats keyboard layouts as settings that can be added and selected separately from the display language.
  4. Apply the relevant direction or layout control below. Use paragraph-direction controls for right-to-left flow; use input-layout controls for unexpected characters.

This comparison helps separate a local document or app behavior from an input configuration that may affect more than one field. It does not, by itself, diagnose hardware.

Change text direction on a Mac

macOS supports left-to-right and right-to-left text, including both directions in the same paragraph. Apple notes that the first character entered determines a paragraph’s default direction. In a supported app, use the Format menu’s writing-direction command to set the paragraph direction explicitly. Some apps do not provide these menu commands.

Apple documents these shortcuts for paragraph direction:

Check direction and input language in Windows and Microsoft 365

When a Microsoft 365 paragraph flows right to left

Microsoft 365 supports RTL composition and mixed-direction text. In contextual direction, the first strong character can influence a paragraph’s reading order and alignment. If the paragraph direction is not what you want, check the document or paragraph’s direction controls and consider what character begins the paragraph. For intentional RTL composition, Microsoft says to enable the corresponding Windows input language. The documented behavior is about text direction and reading order; it does not mean the keyboard itself has turned around. See Microsoft’s Office guidance.

When keys produce the wrong characters

Check the selected keyboard or input layout in Windows’ language settings. Microsoft documents adding and selecting keyboard layouts independently of the display language, so the language shown by Windows does not necessarily tell you which layout is active. Review Settings > Time & language > Language & region, then check the keyboard layout associated with the language you use. Follow Microsoft’s instructions for managing language and keyboard/input layout settings for the controls available in your Windows version.

When should you suspect a keyboard problem?

A paragraph flowing from right to left is not enough to conclude that the keyboard is defective. If the wrong characters appear in multiple apps even after you confirm the intended input layout, that is a separate problem requiring diagnosis for your particular device and operating system. The official documentation cited here explains text direction and input layouts; it does not establish a hardware fix for that symptom. Avoid replacing the keyboard solely because a paragraph’s direction changed.

Why the wording can be misleading

A Microsoft Q&A user described words in a reply or address field appearing “in reverse order” and “from right to left.” That description is useful for recognizing a common way people report the issue, but it is a user-submitted symptom report, not a confirmed diagnosis. The cause depends on the operating system, app, field, input language, and whether the characters themselves or only the paragraph’s direction look reversed. See the Microsoft Q&A report.

For the underlying rendering behavior, Microsoft’s Windows bidirectional-text design documentation describes RTL and left-to-right (LTR) text in apps, including mixed-script text. That is why “backwards” is best treated as an observation to narrow down, not a diagnosis.
