A keyboard theme changes the keyboard’s appearance; a keyboard layout changes how keys and characters are arranged for typing. Choose a theme to change colors or a background, and a layout to change key positions, symbols, or language input.
What a keyboard theme changes
A theme controls visual styling, such as the keyboard’s color palette or background image. It does not, by itself, change which character a key enters. For example, Gboard for Android offers a Theme menu for changing how the keyboard looks. Google’s Gboard theme instructions describe choosing and applying a theme.
What a keyboard layout changes
A layout controls the arrangement used to enter letters and symbols. Depending on the keyboard and language, it may change where characters appear or which character a key produces. Apple lets users assign an alternative layout to a language keyboard, and notes that the software layout may not match the labels on a physical keyboard. See Apple’s iPhone keyboard guide.
Layout options can include more than familiar national arrangements such as QWERTY, QWERTZ, or AZERTY. Samsung’s Korean-language support documentation also lists Korean input formats such as Cheonjiin, alongside QWERTY, and says available formats vary by device operating system. Samsung’s keyboard formats and modes guide (published May 11, 2023) illustrates that options depend on the keyboard and language.

Theme vs. layout at a glance

Language, layout, and theme are separate settings
These settings can appear near one another in an app, but they do different jobs. Adding a language may include choosing a layout for that language; it does not necessarily change the device’s overall language. Google says that changing languages in Gboard does not affect Android’s language settings. Gboard’s language instructions show the language and layout choices as part of keyboard setup.
Keyboard apps may also offer size, mode, feedback, and custom-symbol controls. Samsung lists these separately from language, layout, and theme settings in its Galaxy keyboard settings guide. If a keyboard seems too large, too small, or oddly shaped, check its size or mode controls rather than assuming the layout changed.

How to choose the right setting
- Colors or background are the issue: change the theme.
- Keys, symbols, or language input are the issue: change the language or layout.
- The keyboard’s size or shape is the issue: check separate size or mode settings.
- You use a physical keyboard: confirm the software layout you select, since its mapping may not match the printed key labels.
Example: changing a setting in Gboard
Change the appearance
- Open an app where you can type and bring up Gboard.
- Open the keyboard menu and select Theme.
- Choose a theme and apply it.
Choose a language layout
- Open Gboard’s language settings and add or select a language.
- Choose one of the layouts offered for that language.
These are Gboard for Android examples, not universal menu paths. Available settings and formats vary by keyboard app, language, device, and operating system; Samsung specifically notes that format options can vary with the OS. If a menu label or option differs on your device, use that keyboard app’s language or appearance settings as the guide.
