On a compatible Windows 11 computer, go to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Keyboard > Keyboard backlight. Turn Change keyboard brightness automatically when lighting changes off to keep Windows from adjusting the keyboard light with room lighting, or turn it on to allow ambient-light-based adjustment.
The control is hardware- and version-dependent. Microsoft documents this Windows integration for Windows 11 version 25H2, build 26200.7922 or later, on systems with a keyboard backlight and an ambient-light sensor. If the page is missing, your model may use a manufacturer utility or BIOS setting instead.

- Choose Keyboard.
- Open Keyboard backlight.
- Switch Change keyboard brightness automatically when lighting changes off to disable ambient-light adjustment, or on to enable it.
Microsoft describes this location in its Keyboard Backlight Implementation Guide. The option appears only when Windows detects compatible backlight hardware and the required sensor support; it is not a universal Windows 11 setting.

What the Windows toggle actually controls
Keyboard backlight auto-brightness uses the computer’s ambient-light sensor to choose a keyboard-light level. In a dark room it can select a different level than it would in a bright room. The setting changes that ambient-light response; it does not necessarily control every way the light can change.
Microsoft calls this feature “Keyboard Backlight Autobrightness” and notes that it is distinct from display adaptive brightness, although the implementation concept is similar. Simple global keyboard backlights are covered by the Windows integration. Zoned or per-key RGB lighting is handled through Dynamic Lighting rather than this single global control.

Requirements and compatibility
Availability depends on three pieces working together: the Windows build, the keyboard hardware and an ambient-light sensor.

These thresholds and distinctions come from Microsoft’s implementation documentation, not from a guarantee that every Windows 11 edition or laptop exposes the same user interface. Firmware, BIOS configuration and manufacturer utilities can also determine whether Windows can operate the light.
If “Keyboard backlight” is missing
A missing page or toggle usually means Windows cannot use its integrated control for that device. Check the possibilities in this order:
- Confirm the keyboard is actually backlit. Some product families use the same chassis for backlit and non-backlit configurations.
- Check the Windows build. Microsoft’s documented integration threshold is Windows 11 25H2, build 26200.7922 or later. A supported laptop running an older build may not have the page.
- Look for a model-specific BIOS or utility control. The manufacturer may expose illumination, brightness levels or timeout behavior outside Windows Settings.
- Check firmware and driver support for the exact model. A generic Windows update cannot add a physical light or sensor that the computer does not have.
Do not infer that the keyboard is defective solely because the Windows page is absent. The page is compatibility-dependent, and Microsoft’s guide does not promise it for every Windows 11 PC.

Why the keyboard can still dim after auto-brightness is off
Windows has a separate Energy Saver behavior. On compatible devices, Energy Saver can lower keyboard brightness when power-saving mode is active. To inspect it, open Settings > System > Power & battery > Energy saver and look for Lower keyboard brightness when using energy saver.
Microsoft’s implementation guidance gives a default 70% brightness multiplier for this Energy Saver reduction. That is a technical default in the implementation guidance, not a promise that every computer will dim by exactly 30 percent. Firmware or the manufacturer’s software can apply a different policy.
Turning off ambient-light autobrightness therefore does not disable Energy Saver dimming. If the light changes only when the battery is low or Energy Saver is enabled, investigate this separate setting rather than changing the keyboard sensor option again.
Do not confuse keyboard and display brightness
The built-in screen has its own adaptive and content-aware brightness controls. They are separate from the keyboard light:

Changing display adaptive brightness will not switch the keyboard’s ambient-light option. Conversely, disabling keyboard autobrightness will not stop the screen from adapting. Content-adaptive display brightness can also alter screen brightness or contrast according to what is shown, but it has no direct control over keyboard illumination.
Manufacturer controls can override or supplement Windows
Dell systems
Dell’s support instructions explain that a BIOS Keyboard Illumination option is listed only on models with backlit-keyboard hardware. Some BIOS versions also provide a separate keyboard-backlight timeout setting. Those controls are model- and BIOS-dependent, so the exact names and available values can differ. ASUS systems
ASUS documents an Auto-brighten option in MyASUS for supported devices, with availability restrictions by model and configuration. If Windows does not expose the keyboard page, MyASUS may be the intended control surface. Follow the instructions for the exact device rather than applying the path to every ASUS laptop: MyASUS – Device Settings.

These examples show why there is no universal BIOS path. A vendor utility can manage a timeout or hardware illumination mode even when Windows’ ambient-light toggle is unavailable, and a Windows toggle may not replace those vendor controls.
A practical diagnostic sequence
When the light behaves unexpectedly, change one control at a time so you can identify which policy is responsible:
- Note whether the change follows room lighting, battery level, inactivity or a switch between AC and battery power.
- If it follows room lighting, return to the Windows keyboard-backlight page and disable the automatic-lighting switch.
- If it follows power-saving conditions, inspect the Energy Saver keyboard option instead.
- If it turns off after sitting idle, search the model’s BIOS or utility documentation for a keyboard-illumination timeout; that behavior is separate from ambient-light autobrightness.
- If the keyboard uses zones or RGB effects, check Dynamic Lighting or the vendor’s lighting profile rather than assuming the global Windows control applies.
This sequence also prevents a common mistake: changing the display’s adaptive-brightness option when the symptom is confined to the keys. The screen and keyboard can respond to the same room, but they use separate controls.
Troubleshooting when the setting does not behave as expected
The switch is present but brightness never changes
- Move between noticeably different lighting conditions and allow a short interval for the sensor to react.
- Check whether the keyboard is controlled by a vendor utility, a keyboard shortcut or an active lighting profile. Those controls can hold a fixed level.
- For RGB or multi-zone keyboards, look in Dynamic Lighting or the manufacturer’s lighting software; the global backlight toggle may not govern those effects.
The light changes even after you disabled autobrightness
- Check Energy Saver > Lower keyboard brightness when using energy saver.
- Look for a BIOS timeout or illumination policy. A timeout can turn the light off after inactivity without changing ambient-light autobrightness.
- Review any manufacturer utility that applies profiles when switching between AC power and battery.
The light turns off after inactivity
The Windows keyboard autobrightness setting is not a promise of permanent illumination. Microsoft’s guidance covers ambient-light adjustment and Energy Saver dimming; vendor firmware may separately turn the light off after a timeout. If you need a different idle behavior, search the exact model’s BIOS or utility documentation for timeout, sleep or keyboard illumination.
An external keyboard is connected
Microsoft states that automatic adjustment can work with an external keyboard attached to a host that has an ambient-light sensor. Compatibility still depends on the keyboard and host implementing the required integration. If the Windows page does not appear, use the keyboard’s own controls or the host manufacturer’s documentation.

When to use a fixed brightness instead
Disable the Windows switch when consistent illumination matters—for example, when a room’s changing light causes distracting level changes, when you are matching a fixed RGB profile, or when you want to troubleshoot another power policy. Leave it enabled when you prefer the keyboard to adapt automatically and the sensor response is stable.
For a fully fixed result, also check Energy Saver and any vendor timeout or lighting profile. Otherwise, another policy can still dim or switch off the light even though ambient-light autobrightness is disabled.

Frequently asked questions
Why does my laptop keyboard light change by itself?
The usual Windows explanation is ambient-light autobrightness: a supported sensor changes the keyboard level as room lighting changes. Energy Saver, a vendor profile or a BIOS timeout can also change or switch off the light, so identify when the change occurs before choosing a setting.
Where is the keyboard backlight setting?
On compatible systems it is Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Keyboard > Keyboard backlight. The page is not guaranteed on every Windows 11 PC; missing hardware, an older build or model-specific firmware can remove it.
Does turning off display adaptive brightness turn off keyboard auto-brightness?

Labels and availability can change with Windows builds, BIOS revisions and utility versions. Use the exact model’s documentation whenever the general Windows path is absent or does not control the behavior you are trying to change.
