Kernel Hearts is a co-op roguelike action RPG about magical-girl androids climbing the Tower of Babel through an ash-choked world. You fight angelic enemies, build abilities during each expedition, and work toward destroying a god. The PC version launched on Steam on September 17, 2026. The hands-on coverage discussed here is an early solo impressions piece, not a full review, so its combat and progression observations are useful first impressions rather than a definitive verdict.
What kind of game is Kernel Hearts?
Kernel Hearts combines action-RPG combat and platforming movement with roguelike expeditions, run-by-run ability choices, and longer-term character progression. You play as part of the M.A.H.O.U. Unit, an elite group of super-powered android magical girls. Their mission is to climb the mythical Tower of Babel, defeat increasingly powerful enemies, and destroy a god to save a world nearing extinction. Steam’s listing describes it as a multiplayer co-op roguelike action RPG; the publisher’s overview sets out the story premise.
The distinctive mix is its magical-girl and android identity, tower ascent, angelic foes, and active combat. Rather than a purely story-driven RPG or a simple arena fighter, it asks players to navigate floors, defeat enemies, acquire powers, and carry expedition rewards into future attempts.
What happens during an expedition?
Climb each floor before the threat escalates
In Scott Adams’s October 6, 2026 hands-on account for The Outerhaven, each Tower of Babel floor has a timer that rises from zero toward a limit. When time runs out, an angel pursues the player and the enemies on that floor. Adams recommends locating and reaching the boss before then; the boss portal can be seen in the sky in the session he played.

Use spirits to shape the current run
Adams describes two spirit types. Pink spirits dropped by ordinary enemies can be spent at crescent-moon locations to level up and choose abilities. Blue spirits, found in chests or earned through combos, can be offered at coffins to revive fallen magical girls and select a card. Cards provide a passive effect, a stat bonus, or an ability enhancement. Chests can also contain materials and usable items, including healing and damage options.
Turn expedition rewards into longer-term upgrades
According to the same hands-on report, collected materials persist between runs. Old gold coins can install character chips that improve base stats, while other materials can be given to characters at base camp to increase bonds. Those bonds can unlock stronger starting options, including a better memory module that permits more chips. This gives the climb two progression layers: choices that shape one expedition and upgrades that influence later ones.

How do combat and movement feel?
Adams’s early solo session describes quick light and heavy attacks, with different combos available by alternating them. Abilities unlock as the character levels. The playable character in the session, Fernet, uses a saber and can summon animal allies that damage nearby enemies or add damage to attacks.

Movement is part of both combat and traversal. The account describes quick dodges that can interrupt a combo, jumping and double-jumping to reach ledges, and an air dodge that works like an air dash. Aerial movement matters when platforming and fighting flying enemies. After a boss, a rest area offers an opportunity to try out the current build and maneuverability, according to Adams.

Who are the characters?
The publisher’s premise centers on the M.A.H.O.U. Unit, but the individual character details below come from Adams’s hands-on article rather than the store summary. The session begins with Fernet, who has lost her memory because her memory unit had not been upgraded. She must relearn the world and get to know her crewmates. Adams names Spika, Laika, and Dolce as the other magical girls, and says they become playable as the player progresses through the tower.
Can you play Kernel Hearts solo or in co-op?
The Steam listing includes single-player, online co-op, and cross-platform multiplayer. Whitethorn Games says you can take up to three allies, indicating a group of up to four. Adams played solo and did not personally test co-op. The available information does not establish matchmaking details, the boundaries of cross-play, whether progression is shared, or how party size affects difficulty.

What should new players expect from the learning curve?
Adams says the game’s movement takes time to understand and that unlocking base-camp systems can make the early start feel slow. The floor timer, spirit choices, aerial movement, and persistent upgrades are several systems to learn together. Adams enjoyed the progression system and suggested Story difficulty as a more forgiving starting point, because extra time on floors can help players explore spirits and abilities. That is the author’s early-session judgment, not a universal difficulty recommendation or a conclusion from a completed review.
Where can you play it, and what is established about its release?
Steam lists Ephemera Games as developer and Whitethorn Games as publisher, with the PC release dated September 17, 2026. At the time of the listing snapshot retrieved October 7, 2026, Steam showed a price of $19.99 and 260 user reviews, 78% positive. Those are time-sensitive storefront figures, not a permanent score or an independent measure of quality.

Whitethorn’s platform page lists Steam, Epic Games Store, Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch 2, and PlayStation 5, but gives the release date as TBA. That page supports saying those platforms are listed by the publisher, not that their versions are already available. An Epic Games Store 2025 showcase also featured the game, but the available evidence does not establish its current Epic release status.
What is the fairest early takeaway?
Kernel Hearts is built around a clear loop: fight and move through timed tower floors, adapt a run with spirits and abilities, then use materials and bonds to improve later expeditions. Its appeal is the combination of magical-girl android characters, fast combos, aerial movement, and layered progression. The main caution is that the systems and movement may take time to click, and the early base-camp unlocks can feel gradual.
Those impressions should be kept in proportion: Adams explicitly described the October 6 article as impressions rather than a full review and was still progressing through the game. The account offers a concrete view of an early solo session, not a complete assessment of the full campaign or co-op experience.
