Ken Kutaragi is predicting that real-time AI could turn a person’s ideas and conversations into personalized entertainment—not that today’s AI already replaces video games. In a 4Gamer interview published October 9, 2026, he said that when AI can generate video and music at the speed of current game consoles, “communication and daydreams” could become content. He put that capability around 2028–2029, but the interview does not identify the source of the estimate or present it as an industry consensus.
What Kutaragi means by “AI daydreams”
The phrase in the interview is 「妄想することがコンテンツになる」, which can be translated as “daydreaming itself becomes content.” Kutaragi’s idea is that a user’s imagination and communication could guide an AI as it creates scenarios, characters, video, and music in response. Rather than selecting from a finished game’s fixed story and assets, a person might help shape an experience as it unfolds.
In the 4Gamer interview, Kutaragi put it this way: 「そうなったとき,すべてのコンテンツが変わります。コミュニケーションや妄想がコンテンツになる。妄想することがコンテンツになるんですね。」 (“When that happens, all content will change. Communication and daydreams will become content. Daydreaming itself becomes content.”) The statement is a prediction about a possible form of entertainment, not a technical announcement or a confirmed product roadmap. 4Gamer’s interview, published October 9, 2026, identifies him as a special visiting professor at the University of Electro-Communications and as the creator of PlayStation.
What exists now—and what remains a forecast
Kutaragi’s examples and his envisioned experience differ in important ways. He described AI-made Chinese short dramas featuring generated characters and backgrounds as an example of media production already changing. But, according to the GameBusiness.jp interview published October 8, 2026, he also said that this viewing experience is not yet as interactive as a game and is not generated in real time. His account is not an independent audit of those productions.

| Dimension | AI-made short dramas as Kutaragi describes them | His envisioned experience |
|---|---|---|
| Generation | Not generated in real time, according to Kutaragi | Video and music generated in real time at current game-console speed |
| Audience role | Primarily viewing; he says it is not yet as interactive as games | A person’s communication and imagination shape what unfolds |
| Content | AI-made characters and backgrounds in short dramas | Personalized scenarios, characters, and other content responding to the user |
| Status | A present-day example cited by Kutaragi | A forecast, not an established capability or product |
The distinction matters: an example of AI-assisted media production does not demonstrate that AI can generate a coherent, interactive experience at console speed, or prove when that might become possible.
When does Kutaragi think it could happen?
In the 4Gamer interview, Kutaragi estimated that real-time AI video and music generation operating at the speed of current game consoles could arrive around 2028–2029. The source does not name the person or organization behind the underlying estimate. In the separate GameBusiness.jp interview, he said: 「今はまだリアルタイムに生成されているわけではありません。でもあと2年で変わると見ています。」 (“It is not being generated in real time yet. But I think that will change in two years.”) That is his view, not a settled delivery date.

The timing should therefore be read as a personal forecast. Neither interview establishes that the capability will arrive by then, specifies a technical threshold beyond console-speed generation, or announces a system that meets it.

Kutaragi’s prediction is also about how creative work could be organized. In GameBusiness.jp, he argued that large teams and fixed plans can limit flexibility, and imagined AI serving as a collaborator that helps smaller teams work more flexibly. He described AI as 「一緒に進化する相棒」—“a partner that evolves together with us.”
That is a vision for collaboration, not evidence that AI can independently make a finished game or that large development teams will disappear. The connection is that more flexible creation tools could make it easier to experiment with ideas and build experiences around a person’s input.

Kutaragi cited a global game market of more than ¥30 trillion and speculated that entertainment could reach ¥3,000 trillion if the kind of change he foresees occurs. Both figures are his statements in the 2026 4Gamer interview; that article does not provide an independent methodology. The larger number is speculation about possible entertainment-market scale, not a measured figure or independently verified market forecast. See the 4Gamer interview.
How to read the prediction
- It is Kutaragi’s forecast. The interviews do not establish an industry-wide consensus or announce a product roadmap.
- The central change is interaction. He imagines entertainment generated around a person’s communication and ideas, rather than only AI-assisted production of content watched passively.
- The current example is not proof of the future capability. Kutaragi says the short dramas he cites are not real-time or as interactive as games.
- The 2028–2029 timing is uncertain. It is his estimate, and the 4Gamer interview does not identify the estimate’s source.
A contemporaneous Push Square report published October 2, 2026 provides context on Kutaragi’s broader comments about games and creative curiosity. The direct interviews, however, are the sources for his AI-entertainment prediction.
