Open source does not automatically win: KeePass is a better fit if you want a locally controlled database and are prepared to manage syncing, backups, and compatible apps yourself. LastPass is more convenient if you prefer a hosted service that syncs your vault for you, but that means trusting a provider with the service and its security practices.

How KeePass and LastPass handle your vault

KeePass: a database file you manage

KeePass centers on an encrypted database file. You decide where that file lives and how it is backed up or made available on other devices. Its official documentation describes optional key files and ports for other systems; the exact experience depends on the edition or port you choose. KeePass feature documentation

This gives you direct control over the vault’s storage, but also makes you responsible for keeping copies consistent. If you use a cloud-storage provider or a plugin to move the database between devices, you are adding another service or component to assess. Make sure you understand how it handles simultaneous edits and retain a backup you can restore.

LastPass: a hosted, synced service

LastPass provides a hosted workflow with built-in vault syncing, reducing the need to choose and maintain your own synchronization method. In exchange, access depends on the service and its account and recovery arrangements. Features and limits may depend on the current plan; check LastPass’s current plan details before choosing.

Which one is easier to maintain?

What matters KeePass LastPass
Where the vault is stored An encrypted database file in a location you choose. A hosted vault managed through the service.
Keeping devices in sync You choose and maintain a method, such as storage or a compatible add-on. Built-in hosted syncing.
Ongoing work You manage backups, device compatibility, and any ports or add-ons you use. The provider manages the hosted service; plan-dependent features may vary.
Cost Described as free by the 2026 comparison. Current prices and plan limits should be checked on LastPass’s plan page.

For KeePass, the work is not just initial setup. You need to be able to open the database on every device you rely on, keep a safe backup, and understand whether your chosen edition, port, or add-on is maintained and appropriate. A plugin or port is an additional component—not automatically equivalent to the core program.

For LastPass, convenience means less manual vault-file handling, not the absence of account or provider risk. Review current plan terms and recovery options rather than assuming that every capability is included in every plan.

What the security evidence does—and does not—show

KeePass encryption depends on configuration and your master secret

KeePass’s security documentation says KeePass 2.x supports AES-KDF and Argon2. It explains that increasing the key-transformation work factor can raise the cost of guessing attacks, while also making database loading and saving slower. Choose a setting that remains practical on all devices that must open the file, and use a strong master password. An algorithm name alone does not establish that a particular vault is safer overall. KeePass also supports using a key file, including in combination with a password. The key file must remain available and protected: if you make it necessary to open the database and lose it, you may be unable to access the vault. A USB flash drive is one optional way to carry a key file or keep an offline copy; it is not a required purchase, and it should not be your only backup. KeePass feature documentation

LastPass’s incident history and current security statements

In a notice dated December 22, 2022, LastPass said an unauthorized party used information from an August 2022 incident to access certain elements of customer information. The company said customer passwords remained encrypted under its zero-knowledge architecture. That is LastPass’s account and assurance, not an independent finding. LastPass’s current security page lists security investments, audits, access-control changes, an IRAP assessment, certifications, infrastructure changes, vault changes, and a PBKDF2 setting of 600,000 iterations. These are company statements; they do not independently prove that LastPass is safer than KeePass or establish a like-for-like comparison of current security. LastPass security page

Choose by workflow, not by the open-source label

  • Choose KeePass if you want to control where the encrypted database is stored, are comfortable arranging sync and backups, and can reliably protect any required key file.
  • Choose LastPass if a managed hosted vault and built-in syncing matter more than managing a local database, and you are comfortable relying on the provider and its account-recovery process.
  • Pause before choosing either if you have no dependable recovery plan. For KeePass, verify you can restore a backup and access the file and any required key file. For LastPass, understand the account recovery options and current plan limits.

The 2026 comparison describes KeePass as free and identifies third-party storage or plugins as possible sync paths. LastPass’s own comparison discusses passwordless access using FIDO2-certified hardware keys, but confirm account and device requirements before buying any key.
