The right KeePass alternative depends on what you want to change. Choose KeePassXC if you want a local encrypted database with a modern desktop app; consider Bitwarden or Proton Pass if you want a hosted account and a documented route to move your passwords; assess 1Password if you want a commercial service and its workflow suits you. None is established as universally safer or better than KeePass by the available product documentation. The practical trade-off is who manages sync, recovery, sharing, and backups.

What makes a KeePass alternative better for you?

KeePass-style password managers store credentials in an encrypted database file that you control. That local-first approach gives you a say in where the vault is stored, but you are also responsible for making backups and arranging safe access across devices. KeePassXC describes its database as an offline encrypted KDBX file that can be kept in a location you choose, including private or public cloud storage; cloud storage does not turn it into an account-based service with vendor-managed sync. See the KeePassXC project and its user guide.

A hosted password manager shifts some operational work to the service: your vault syncs through an account, and the provider’s apps and recovery arrangements become part of your setup. That can be more convenient, but it is a different trust and dependency model, not proof of stronger security. Before switching, decide which matters most: local control, managed sync, recovery, sharing, device coverage, migration support, or recurring cost.

  • Keep control of a local vault: look at KeePassXC.
  • Use hosted sync or run your own compatible server: evaluate Bitwarden.
  • Want a published KeePass migration guide for a hosted service: evaluate Proton Pass.
  • Prefer to assess a commercial service’s security and workflow: include 1Password, but verify its current import options and plans before deciding.

Which KeePass alternative should you consider?

KeePassXC: a local-first desktop alternative

KeePassXC is open-source desktop software for Windows, macOS, and Linux. It keeps data in an encrypted file rather than requiring a hosted account, so it suits people who want a maintained desktop application while retaining responsibility for the database and its storage. Its documented features include browser integration, passkey support through browser integration, TOTP, attachments, entry history, database reports, SSH-agent support, and YubiKey or OnlyKey challenge-response support. Hardware-key support is optional and requires compatible setup; it is not a requirement for every user. Feature details are in the KeePassXC user guide.

The KeePassXC project reports that version 2.7.9 received France’s ANSSI First-level Security Certification (CSPN). That is a certification fact about the specified version and scope, not a certification of every release or of all KeePass-compatible software. The project lists version 2.7.12 as released March 10, 2026, and version 2.8.0-beta1 as released September 23, 2026; the latter is a beta, so do not treat beta functionality as stable release behavior. Check the project homepage for release information.

Bitwarden: hosted sync, with a self-hosting option

Bitwarden is worth evaluating if you want a hosted vault, or if you prefer to operate a compatible server stack yourself. Its security FAQ says data is encrypted or hashed before leaving the local device and describes self-hosting as an option. Those are the vendor’s descriptions of its architecture, not an independent head-to-head security result. KeePass 2.x documents Bitwarden as an import source. Read the Bitwarden security FAQ and check the KeePass import documentation for the applicable importer details.

Proton Pass: a documented KeePass migration route

Proton publishes instructions for importing KeePass and KeePassXC data into Proton Pass, making it a practical candidate if you want to move from a local database to a hosted service. Proton says fields in items users create are end-to-end encrypted. Treat that as Proton’s product claim, and consult its KeePass import guide for current steps and scope. The guide does not by itself establish current account limits, prices, or feature parity for your devices.

1Password: a commercial option to assess by workflow

1Password’s security page describes end-to-end encryption, AES-GCM-256, optional telemetry, and export tools. These details may help you assess its approach, but the evidence here does not establish a current KeePass import route, a comparable price, or that it is safer than KeePass. Review the vendor’s security documentation and confirm import compatibility and current plan terms before choosing it.

Compare the trade-offs that affect daily use

The official documentation supports an architectural and migration comparison, not a complete current buying comparison. It does not provide one comparable table of regional prices, free-plan limits, or verified support for every mobile and browser workflow. Check those details directly for your region and devices before switching.

Option Vault and sync model Migration evidence Security evidence in the cited product documentation
KeePassXC Offline encrypted KDBX file; you choose where it is stored and manage cross-device access. Its guide lists import from CSV, 1Password, Bitwarden, Proton Pass, and KeePass 1. The project reports CSPN certification for version 2.7.9; this does not establish a universal comparison.
Bitwarden Hosted service, with a self-hosting option described by the vendor. KeePass 2.x lists Bitwarden as an import source. Bitwarden describes encryption and hashing before data leaves the device; this is vendor documentation.
Proton Pass Hosted account; confirm current sync, platform, and plan details with Proton. Proton publishes a KeePass and KeePassXC import guide. Proton says fields in user-created items are end-to-end encrypted; this is the vendor’s claim.
1Password Commercial service; confirm current account and sync terms with the vendor. A current KeePass import route is not established by the cited security page. 1Password describes end-to-end encryption and AES-GCM-256; this is vendor documentation.

When comparing these options, also check whether the apps you need support your operating systems, browsers, and mobile devices; whether sharing and emergency access fit your household or team; how account recovery works; and whether you can export your data in a usable format. Encryption descriptions, a certification, and an independent comparative assessment are different kinds of evidence. Vendor pages alone cannot show that one product is categorically more secure.

Move your passwords without leaving a plaintext copy behind

Importers vary, and a successful import does not guarantee that every field or attachment transferred correctly. Keep a protected copy of the original database until you have checked the destination.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Back up the KeePass database. Save a protected copy in a location you control before making changes.
  2. Choose the destination’s official importer. Follow the current instructions from KeePassXC, Proton Pass, or the destination service. Import options differ by app and version.
  3. If an export file is required, treat it as exposed credentials. KeePassXC warns that CSV and several other export formats—including exports for 1Password, Bitwarden, and Proton Pass—are unencrypted. Do not put them in a public or synced folder, and do not leave them in Downloads.
  4. Verify the imported vault before deleting the original. Check entries, website URLs, attachments, custom fields, and TOTP data against the KeePass database; do not assume every importer preserves every item type.
  5. Remove temporary exports securely. After validation, securely delete plaintext export files and check the locations where they may have been copied.

For the relevant details, consult the KeePassXC user guide, Proton’s KeePass import guide, and KeePass 2.x import documentation.

How to compare security without overclaiming

KeePass documents key derivation using a random salt and a configurable work factor intended to increase the effort required for guessing attacks. Its documentation also notes that some operations require sensitive data to be present unencrypted in process memory. Those details describe parts of the implementation; they are not a guarantee against every threat or a direct comparison with another product. See the KeePass security documentation.

For alternatives, distinguish what the evidence actually says: KeePassXC reports a certification for one named version; Bitwarden, Proton, and 1Password describe their own security designs. None of those vendor pages alone establishes which manager is safest overall. A strong master password, secure recovery arrangements, timely updates, and protection of the devices where you unlock the vault remain important whichever option you choose.
