To stop your Windows 11 screen from turning off automatically, change the display timeout in Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts. Set Turn my screen off after to a longer duration—or to Never, if available. On a laptop, set the On battery power and When plugged in options separately.
Change the screen-off timeout

Open Start > Settings.

Go to System > Power & battery.

Open Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts. Some Windows support references use the shorter label Screen and sleep.

Under Turn my screen off after, choose the desired duration for On battery power.

Choose a duration for When plugged in separately if you also want the display to stay on longer while charging.

Screen timeout and sleep are different settings
Turn my screen off after controls the display. Make my device sleep after controls when the whole computer enters sleep. Adjust the screen setting to keep the display on; change the sleep setting only if you also want the computer to remain awake longer. Microsoft lists both controls in its Windows power settings guidance.

Why the screen may still turn off
Battery and charging have separate timeouts
If the screen stays on while charging but turns off on battery, check the On battery power value. For the reverse situation, check When plugged in. Microsoft’s documented controls treat them separately.
Presence sensing may turn off the display
Some Windows 11 PCs have a presence sensor that can turn off the screen when you leave. If your device supports it, look for presence-sensing controls under Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen and sleep. The options can vary with hardware, manufacturer configuration, and organization management. See Microsoft’s presence-sensing settings guidance.

A screen saver has its own timer
If a screen saver appears rather than the display simply going dark, check Settings > Personalization > Lock screen. The screen saver’s idle timeout and its optional sign-in requirement when resuming are separate from the screen power timeout. Microsoft explains these controls in its screen saver settings guidance.
The setting labels may differ
Windows builds and device capabilities can affect which labels appear. If you cannot find the section, use Settings search for screen and sleep. If a control is missing or managed by your organization, check with your device manufacturer or IT administrator.

Choose a timeout with the power tradeoff in mind
A longer screen-on duration can use more power, particularly on battery. Microsoft identifies shorter screen and sleep durations as power-saving measures and also notes that display brightness and refresh rate affect power use. There is no universal battery-life estimate for a particular timeout; the effect depends on the device and how it is used. See Microsoft’s battery-saving guidance.
