A smart home can add friction when a basic action—like turning on a light—depends on an app, hub, or network. A retrofit relay offers a practical middle ground: it can add connected control while keeping a physical switch in the interaction. The exact result depends on the circuit, relay, and configuration; it is not a universal fix for smart-home usability.
Why a smart home can feel harder to use
Connected control is useful when it adds options, but it can become an obstacle if ordinary controls are displaced. A light that is easiest to operate through a phone may be less convenient for a guest, a child, or someone who simply wants to use the wall switch. Depending on an app, hub, or network also introduces points of friction that a conventional switch does not require.
That does not prove smart homes are generally harder to use: the cited product and platform documentation contains no comparative usability study or population-wide statistic. The narrower point is that some installations make familiar actions less direct. A relay retrofit can preserve a physical input while adding connected control.
What a smart relay changes
A relay is installed in the lighting circuit to control power to the load. In a suitable wiring arrangement, the existing wall switch remains connected as a physical input, while the relay also exposes connected control through its supported platform. The switch’s exact behavior depends on the wiring and configuration, so check the specific device’s instructions rather than assuming every relay behaves the same way.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
One example is the Shelly 1L Gen3. Shelly describes it as a lighting-control retrofit device that can operate using a live wire without a neutral at the device, supports local Wi-Fi operation, and can integrate with platforms including Home Assistant. This is a model-specific example, not evidence that all relays work without a neutral or suit every circuit.
Will a relay work with your existing switch and wiring?
Check the neutral requirement
Neutral-wire needs vary by model. Shelly says most of its relays cannot operate without a neutral, while identifying a limited set of exceptions, including the 1L Gen3 for lighting on/off control. Verify the exact model and wiring diagram before choosing a device; “no neutral required” is not a safe general rule for smart relays. See Shelly’s guidance on relays without a neutral cable.

Check the bulb and load
For the bulb use case described on its product page, Shelly says a Bypass 1L/2L Gen3 is required to control bulbs greater than 5 W. Treat that threshold as a compatibility specification for the stated 1L Gen3 use case, not a universal rule for other relays or loads. Confirm the load type and any accessory requirements in the current instructions for the exact model: Shelly 1L Gen3 product details.

Before buying, check the relay’s wiring arrangement, supported load, dimensions, and compatibility with the installation point. A product that meets a no-neutral requirement may still be unsuitable for a particular circuit or enclosure. If the documentation does not clearly cover your setup, ask a qualified electrician to assess it.

How the relay appears in Home Assistant
Home Assistant documents both automatic discovery and manual setup for its Shelly integration. Shelly device relays are added as switch entities by default; users can configure a relay as a light entity in supported cases. That describes the platform’s integration path, not a guarantee that every installation is automatic or behaves identically during a network or power interruption. See the Home Assistant Shelly integration documentation.
Home Assistant’s July 29, 2025 announcement described retrofit relays as a way to add smart control to devices such as light fixtures and ceiling fans. That is the platform’s own characterization, not independent testing of usability or reliability: Home Assistant’s announcement.

Relay retrofit, smart switch, or smart bulb?
These options solve different installation problems. There is no supported head-to-head usability result establishing one as the best choice for every home. Compare them against the actual circuit and the way people in the household use the control.
| Option | Physical-control question | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Relay retrofit | Can the existing switch remain usable with this model and wiring? | Neutral requirement, load compatibility, any bypass, enclosure fit, and platform support. |
| Replace the wall switch | Does the replacement preserve a familiar wall control? | Wiring requirements, load compatibility, and the switch’s supported platform and behavior. |
| Smart bulb | Will the bulb remain powered and controllable when someone uses the wall switch? | Whether the household can keep the bulb powered, and how its app or platform control fits the routine. |
The table identifies questions to investigate, not universal product characteristics. For any option, the important usability test is whether someone can still perform the everyday action they expect without needing an unexpected app or workaround.

Install safely and plan for the household
Relay installation involves household wiring. Shelly’s safety guide for the different Plus 1 model calls for caution and qualified-electrical installation; it should not be treated as model-specific instructions for the 1L Gen3 or another relay. Follow the exact relay’s safety documentation and local electrical requirements, and use a qualified electrician when appropriate. The Shelly Plus 1 safety guide illustrates why product-specific safety instructions matter.
Before making a change, decide how the light should work for someone who does not use the smart-home app. Check that intended physical control, platform integration, and the chosen relay’s wiring and load specifications all fit that goal.
