Usually, a home’s Wi-Fi stops when the power goes out unless the router and any other required home equipment have backup power. Even then, internet access continues only if the provider’s network is still working. Wi-Fi is the wireless link inside your home; it is not the same thing as the internet connection beyond it.
What happens to Wi-Fi and internet when power fails?
A home connection depends on a chain of equipment. The router or gateway broadcasts the Wi-Fi network, while a modem or fiber optical network terminal (ONT) connects the home to the provider’s access network. Provider-side equipment then carries traffic onward. If any required link loses power or service, you may not be able to reach the internet. The FTC describes home Wi-Fi as a wireless connection typically provided by a router that sends a signal for devices to use: How To Secure Your Home Wi-Fi Network.
- Router or gateway loses power: The home Wi-Fi network generally stops broadcasting.
- Modem or ONT loses power: The router may still broadcast its Wi-Fi name, but the home can lose its connection to the provider.
- Provider network is disrupted: Your devices may connect to Wi-Fi but still have no public internet access.
A powered local network may still support some local-only devices or files, depending on how they are set up. Services that rely on the cloud should not be assumed to keep working.
Does keeping the router powered keep the internet working?
Not necessarily. A backup battery or UPS can keep home equipment on, but it cannot by itself restore a failed provider connection or power equipment elsewhere in the network. AT&T notes that the modem or router needs electricity even when the provider network remains available; fiber installations may also need a powered ONT: How to stay online during a power outage.

For fiber, the fact that signals travel as light through the outside fiber does not mean customer equipment works without electricity. Google Fiber says, “However, while the fiber network itself doesn’t need electricity, your router and Fiber Jack still do.” Its battery-backup overview also explains that mesh extenders need their own backup power to remain available: Internet Battery Backup Overview. Equipment and provider arrangements differ for cable, fixed wireless, and other services, so do not assume every neighborhood network either fails immediately or stays up for a fixed period.
Which backup options can help?
The right option depends on which devices it powers, whether it supplies an alternate route to the internet, its runtime under your actual load, compatibility with your service, and local cellular coverage if mobile service is involved. No option guarantees that the provider’s upstream network will remain available.

| Option | What it can do | Key limits to check |
|---|---|---|
| UPS | Supply AC power to a modem and router, and potentially an ONT or Fiber Jack if its capacity and output suit the equipment. | Check the devices’ power requirements, connectors, and expected runtime under load. It keeps local equipment powered, not the provider’s outside network. Fairfax County lists a UPS supplying 120-volt power as an option and cautions that a voice-oriented battery backup may not power broadband equipment: Backup Power. |
| Generator | Power home networking equipment when safely and appropriately connected. Fairfax County identifies a whole-house generator as an option. | It does not guarantee provider-side service; follow generator safety instructions and applicable electrical guidance. |
| Provider battery | Power specific provider equipment or a designated backup device. | Confirm exactly which components are supported, equipment compatibility, and the stated duration. A battery for one gateway or Fiber Jack may not power mesh extenders. |
| Cellular failover or phone hotspot | Offer an alternate internet path through a mobile network when the required phone, gateway, or router is powered and cellular service is usable. | Requires compatible service and equipment, power, coverage, and available mobile-network capacity. Congestion or damage during a widespread emergency can reduce availability. |
Check a UPS against your equipment
Read the labels or manuals for the router, modem, and—on fiber service—the ONT or Fiber Jack. Check that the UPS has suitable outlets and capacity for the devices you intend to run, then look for a runtime estimate for that actual load. A UPS that powers only the router may leave the modem or ONT off, so list every required component before choosing one.

Provider examples illustrate why eligibility and supported equipment matter; they are specific to the providers’ U.S. services, not universal recommendations. Verizon’s Cellular Wi-Fi Backup requires the Fios router to have a separate power source, plus a registered phone that stays on, nearby, and on a stable mobile signal. Verizon says Fios routers do not include a battery backup unit, and coverage is not guaranteed: Cellular Wi-Fi Backup FAQs.

Xfinity describes its Pro WiFi Extender switching to 4G LTE during a network outage. Its listed backup-mode ceiling is up to 30 Mbps download and 7 Mbps upload, with actual speeds varying and not guaranteed. A separately available, fully charged battery is listed for up to four hours of power for the extender; availability and gateway compatibility apply. Those figures describe this product and setup, not a typical UPS or general outage runtime: Xfinity Pro WiFi Extender overview.
T-Mobile says its Home Internet Backup gateway needs a battery backup, generator, or another power source to stay connected during a power outage; coverage and performance vary: Backup Internet Plan. For any cellular option, check local signal and provider terms, and remember mobile networks also depend on powered infrastructure.

How to prepare before an outage
- Identify the complete connection path. Note whether your service uses a modem, an ONT or Fiber Jack, a router or gateway, and any mesh extenders.
- Check the power needs of each device. Use equipment labels or manuals to confirm the required power, connectors, and supported backup method.
- Choose backup based on the outage you want to address. A UPS or generator supplies local power; cellular failover or a hotspot can provide another route, but only where service, signal, and capacity are available.
- Check current compatibility and runtime. Verify your ISP’s supported equipment and battery options, then estimate duration using the actual devices and load rather than a generic hours figure.
- Keep a non-Wi-Fi way to communicate. Save essential contact details and outage information where you can access them if home internet or mobile service is unavailable.
Why voice-backup rules do not tell you Wi-Fi runtime
Rules or guidance for traditional phone or interconnected VoIP backup should not be treated as a broadband guarantee. An FCC order from 2015 discusses an eight-hour backup-power option for covered interconnected VoIP services; that figure concerns specified voice-service continuity, not general Wi-Fi or broadband runtime: FCC 15-98. Your actual internet backup duration depends on the equipment, its load, and the power source.
