These tools solve different memory problems for coding agents. Keep the Why is centered on preserving why a codebase took its current shape; OKF Agent Memory organizes durable project knowledge and makes it searchable; RepoWise builds a broader codebase-intelligence model with a reviewed decision layer. Choose by what your team needs an agent to remember and how that knowledge should be retrieved and governed—not by assuming the three are interchangeable.
What each approach is designed to remember
Keep the Why: rationale behind code
Keep the Why focuses on knowledge that may not be obvious from the code itself: why an architecture was chosen, why an alternative was rejected, why an awkward workaround remains, and what an incident taught the team. Its creator describes repository Markdown in context/ as the durable record. The workflow is deliberate capture of rationale in files that remain part of the repository. OKF Agent Memory: structured knowledge and local retrieval
OKF Agent Memory is a Git-native project-memory implementation based on OKF v0.2. Its official repository documents a knowledge corpus and an MCP server that communicates over stdio, giving compatible agents a way to retrieve project knowledge locally. The project lists an MIT license. OKF Agent Memory repository
It is not an official Google product. Its FAQ says Google Cloud published the OKF specification, while OKF Agent Memory is an independent implementation. The site lists release v0.6.0 and advertises an OKF Cloud private beta; release and beta details can change. OKF FAQ

RepoWise: derived codebase intelligence with decisions as a layer
RepoWise aims to derive a wider model of a repository, including code and repository context, risk, search, and decision rationale. Its MCP tools are intended to surface that indexed information when an agent needs it. Architectural decisions are part of this model, rather than its only purpose. RepoWise documentation
How the memory and retrieval models differ
| Approach | Canonical memory | How retrieval is described | Decision authority |
|---|---|---|---|
| Keep the Why | Repository Markdown in context/, according to the creator’s comparison |
Normal repository and file search | Emphasizes intentionally capturing rationale; no separate decision-approval mechanism is described in the comparison |
| OKF Agent Memory | A repository knowledge corpus structured around OKF v0.2 | Local search and MCP tools over stdio | Knowledge is organized into concepts; the cited materials do not describe a distinct accepted-versus-candidate decision authority model |
| RepoWise | Repository data and a derived index; the comparison says accepted decisions can be exported to a Git-tracked manifest | Indexed retrieval and MCP tools | Accepted decisions govern; unaccepted candidates are hints only |

How RepoWise distinguishes suggestions from rules
RepoWise’s documentation says a decision candidate does not govern the agent. Its MCP documentation puts the distinction plainly: “A candidate governs nothing. A decision is a candidate a person accepted with repowise decision confirm.” Confirmation requires a reason, scope, and evidence reference, according to its CLI documentation. This gives teams a review point before a proposed architectural decision becomes authoritative. RepoWise MCP documentation RepoWise CLI documentation
What the reported experiment does—and does not—show
Keep the Why’s creator reports a controlled rejected-change experiment: in 7 of 10 sessions without recorded rationale, an agent offered an already-rejected simplification as an option. In 0 of 10 sessions with the rationale recorded did it do so; in all 10 sessions with the rationale, it identified the change as rejected. This is a project-author-reported result from 2026, not independent validation or evidence that the same outcome will generalize to other teams, agents, or repositories. Which approach fits your team’s memory problem?
Choose a rationale-capture workflow when decisions are being forgotten
Evaluate Keep the Why if agents or developers repeatedly ask “Why was this architecture chosen?” or “Why is an awkward workaround still there?” and the missing information is the reasoning behind existing code. Its described model depends on the team recording that rationale in repository Markdown; it does not promise to infer every reason from code automatically.
Evaluate OKF Agent Memory when knowledge needs structure and local search
Consider OKF Agent Memory if the question is how to represent, retrieve, and compose a durable body of project knowledge for agents, and local search plus MCP access fits your workflow. Verify that its knowledge model and retrieval interface suit your agent setup, and check current release and hosted-beta availability directly because those details may change.

Evaluate RepoWise when you need indexed context and reviewed decisions
Consider RepoWise if your goal is a derived intelligence model spanning code and repository context, with indexed search and a human-reviewed decision layer. Its candidate-versus-accepted distinction matters if you want agents to see possible decisions without treating them as binding until a person confirms them.
