To prevent avoidable sync problems when recording video and audio on separate devices, capture a clear shared cue—usually a visible, audible slate clap—keep camera scratch audio when practical, and verify alignment at both the beginning and end of long takes. Use audio waveforms, matching timecode, or a manual slate alignment according to what your recordings actually contain. A slate gives you a reference point; it does not prevent independent device clocks from drifting.

Why separate recordings go out of sync

Separate cameras and audio recorders timestamp or record media using their own settings and clocks. That can create two different problems:

  • Fixed offset: The audio is consistently early or late by roughly the same amount throughout the recording. Aligning the clips at a shared cue can correct this.
  • Rate drift: The start aligns, but the difference grows toward the end. Separate devices can run at slightly different rates, so a single start-point adjustment will not keep a long take aligned.

Sound Devices explains this head-to-tail drift in its PIX 270i User Guide and Technical Information: “Drift (matching the end or “tail” of a take) occurs because different recorders (audio or camera) run at different rates – the beginning of files from each may have zero offset, but by the end they drift apart.” That is the manufacturer’s explanation of the issue, not a claim that every device drifts by a particular amount.

What to capture on set

Before the take: confirm settings and references

  • Set the intended camera frame rate and project frame rate, and check that both are what the production expects.
  • Keep the camera’s usable on-board reference audio when the workflow allows. It gives an editor overlapping sound that may help match the external recording.
  • If the devices use timecode, confirm that each is receiving and recording the intended format. In a multicamera setup, check that the clips actually carry accurate matching timecode before depending on automatic timecode sync.
  • For a setup without timecode, plan a sharp clap or slate at the start of every take. Make it visible to the camera and audible to the separate recorder.
  • For long takes or multiple devices, decide whether the workflow needs only corresponding file positions or also a shared clock. Timecode can help locate corresponding moments; supported genlock or wordclock can address clock-rate differences.

During the take: make the cue usable

  • Slate each take clearly, and ensure the cue is captured on both the camera image and the external recording. Keep the camera scratch track rolling enough to include the slate and shared sound.
  • For long sessions, add another shared cue later when practical. A second reference point helps show whether the mismatch is a constant offset or is increasing over time.
  • Use consistent camera, take, and recorder names so the editor can identify which sound belongs with which picture. RØDE’s Resolve 18.5 workflow guide likewise recommends naming video and recorder audio so their camera or transmitter origins are identifiable.

A hand clap can provide the same basic shared event as a slate when it is clearly visible and audible. Neither a slate nor a clap locks the devices’ clocks; it provides evidence for alignment.

Choose the sync method that matches the evidence

What the recordings contain Useful alignment method What to check
Clean overlapping audio on camera and recorder Waveform or audio synchronization Both tracks must contain the same identifiable sound. If the scratch track is missing or different, audio matching may not find a reliable match.
Accurate matching timecode Timecode synchronization Verify that each device recorded the intended timecode and frame-rate settings. Timecode helps align positions but does not necessarily synchronize independent clock rates.
A visible and audible slate or another shared marker Manual alignment at the cue, or clip-marker synchronization where supported Align the matching event, then inspect the tail of a long take for drift.
No reliable shared audio, timecode, or marker Recover a usable common reference if possible; otherwise alignment may require manual editorial judgment Do not assume an automatic method can align clips without shared evidence.

The right method depends on what was captured, how long the take is, how many devices are involved, and what the installed editing software supports. Confirm actual timecode, genlock, or wordclock inputs and recording behavior in the manuals for the specific camera and recorder; these features are not universal.

Align clips in post

Adobe Premiere Pro

Adobe documents synchronization choices in two workflows. In the Timeline panel, its Synchronize clips in Timeline panel in Premiere Pro help covers alignment by clip start, clip end, common timecode, or numbered clip markers, and lets you select an audio channel as the reference. A slate clap at the head or tail can serve as a shared start or end reference.

For multicamera source sequences, Adobe’s Create a multi-camera source sequence in Premiere help describes synchronization by timecode, linear timecode, sound timecode, audio, or clip markers. For a separate audio-only clip, it also documents a frame-offset adjustment from -100 to +100 frames. These are different Premiere workflows; choose the one that fits the media and verify the current instructions for your installed version.

Verify the whole take

  1. Align the clips using the strongest available shared reference: clean audio, accurate timecode, or the slate/marker.
  2. Check a clear event near the start, such as the slate clap or a sharp transient. Confirm that the picture event and sound line up.
  3. Check a corresponding event near the end of any long take. Watch lip movement and listen for transients or room cues.
  4. If the start matches but the end does not, treat it as possible rate drift rather than applying another single offset and assuming the whole take is fixed.
  5. If the clips remain consistently early or late, adjust their alignment and check timecode plus the camera’s embedded audio/video behavior.

Diagnose common sync symptoms

Symptom Likely issue Next step
The whole recording is consistently early or late Fixed offset Align at the slate or other shared cue, or apply an appropriate edit offset. Check timecode and how the camera embeds audio with video.
The start aligns but the tail does not Rate drift Check whether the devices ran from independent clocks and confirm frame-rate and timecode settings. Where the equipment supports it, shared genlock or wordclock can address rate synchronization; timecode alone may not.
Waveform auto-sync cannot find a match Insufficient or dissimilar shared audio Check that the camera scratch track overlaps the external recording and contains the same sound. Use a slate or another manual reference if available.
Different takes need different corrections Inconsistent setup or metadata Check each take’s slate and each device’s timecode and frame-rate configuration. Do not apply a correction inferred from one clip to every take.

When synchronization hardware is worth considering

A slate is a simple fallback for a single camera and recorder, while timecode can make it easier to locate corresponding moments across multiple devices. For long takes or demanding multi-device work, hardware that provides a shared clock may help address rate drift—but only if the camera and recorder support compatible connections and the production configures them correctly.

Before buying or deploying sync equipment, check each device’s actual timecode, genlock, or wordclock inputs and outputs, supported formats, and whether the signal is recorded or used to synchronize the clock. Timecode and clock synchronization serve related but distinct purposes. A timecode setting by itself is not proof that independent devices’ rates are locked.
