You may not have to choose between Samsung Gallery on your Galaxy device and cloud access through Google Photos. Eligible users can sync selected Gallery folders to Google storage while continuing to use Gallery for everyday organization and editing. But this is not the same as turning on Google Photos backup: synced items are excluded from some Google Photos features, and deleting them in either app deletes them from both.
What Gallery sync with Google storage actually does
Samsung’s Gallery sync connects selected photos and videos on a Galaxy device to a personal Google Account. The media is saved at original quality and uses that account’s storage. You can view and share synced items in Google Photos, while keeping Samsung Gallery as your familiar on-device library.
This connection is distinct from Google Photos backup. Google says, “Samsung-synced photos will not appear in all Google Photos features.” In particular, Gallery-synced items do not appear in Search, Memories, or Live albums unless you also back them up through Google Photos. If those features are important, Gallery sync alone will not provide them.

Check whether your Galaxy device and account are eligible
Samsung Support India’s guide, updated October 1, 2026, lists One UI 9.0 or later and a personal Google Account as requirements. Supervised Google Accounts and Google Workspace accounts are not supported. Samsung’s guide says: “Currently, Gallery sync with Google storage feature (‘Sync photos and videos’) is available on devices running One UI 9.0 or later.”

The guide is regional and does not give a complete model-by-model or region-by-region rollout list. Check your own phone’s Gallery settings and install available software updates rather than assuming the option is available on every Galaxy device.
Set up sync and choose which folders to include
- Open Gallery on your Galaxy phone or tablet.
- Tap Menu > Settings > Sync photos and videos.
- Select the Google Account you want to use.
- Choose which albums or device folders to sync, then tap Sync now. An active network connection is required.
You can select folders such as Downloads or Screenshots and leave other folders out. For example, if you want cloud access to screenshots but prefer to keep your main camera roll out of this sync, select the screenshot folder and exclude the camera roll. Review the selected folders before starting so the sync matches what you intend to store in the Google Account.

Samsung says media already uploaded through Google Photos backup will not be duplicated when Gallery sync is enabled. That does not make the two sync methods interchangeable: Google Photos backup is still needed for the excluded Photos features described above.

Deletion is the most important consequence to understand before using the connected libraries. If you delete a synced photo or video from Samsung Gallery or Google Photos, it is removed from both apps and from cloud storage. Do not treat deleting from one view as a way to keep a cloud copy while clearing the phone, or vice versa.

Edits behave differently from deletions. An edit can appear as a separate copy, and an edit made on the web or another device does not overwrite the original on the Samsung phone. If you rely on a particular version, check which copy you are viewing before removing or replacing anything.
Choose the app by the job you need it to do

Samsung documents Gallery’s built-in editing, private albums, media sharing, and other functions in its Gallery app guide; the available tools depend on the device and its software. The choice is not necessarily one app or the other: Gallery can remain your daily on-device interface while selected media syncs to Google, provided its feature limits and deletion behavior suit you.

If you used Samsung Gallery with OneDrive
Microsoft says, “Starting September 30, 2026, Samsung Gallery will no longer sync directly with OneDrive.” Existing OneDrive photos remain accessible in OneDrive and are not deleted by the change. To continue new uploads to OneDrive, Microsoft directs users to enable Camera backup in the OneDrive app; this is a separate route, not a continuation of Gallery’s direct sync.
