The unnamed app in the headline appears to be Joplin, an open-source notes app designed to work offline. It can keep notes on your device and offers optional end-to-end encryption, but it is not automatically private in every setup: encryption requires configuration, and syncing through a third-party service sends data to that provider.
What Joplin is—and what “offline first” means
Joplin is a free, open-source note-taking and to-do application. It organizes notes in notebooks, stores them in Markdown format, and lets you search them. Its official overview describes the apps as offline first: notes are stored on your phone or computer and remain accessible without an internet connection. Joplin is available for Windows, Linux, macOS, Android, and iOS. Joplin’s product overview documents these features.
Offline access does not mean that the app never connects to the internet. Joplin lists connections for optional functions such as updates, geolocation, and synchronization. Its privacy policy says saved data, including notes and images, is not sent to a service without user authorization. Joplin’s privacy policy explains the distinction.
How private are your notes?
There are two separate questions: where your notes are stored, and whether they are encrypted. Keeping notes on your device supports offline use, but it does not by itself mean that the notes are encrypted. Joplin supports end-to-end encryption, but it is not enabled automatically for every new user. You must enable it manually on one device and sync the encryption setup to your other devices. Joplin’s instructions describe creating an encryption master key protected by your password. See Joplin’s end-to-end encryption guide before relying on this protection.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Syncing is optional, but choosing a sync destination affects where your data goes. Joplin lists options including Nextcloud, Dropbox, OneDrive, and Joplin Cloud. If you choose a third-party service, notes are sent to the account you selected, and that provider’s privacy policy also matters. The app’s privacy protections should therefore be judged together with your encryption settings and sync choice, not from the “offline first” label alone.
What you gain—and what you should check before switching
Joplin’s documented strengths are local, offline access; Markdown notes organized into notebooks; search; and customization through plugins and themes. A browser Web Clipper is available for Firefox and Chrome. These options suit readers who want more control over note storage and format, but customization can mean more setup than a minimalist notes app.

The official information cited here does not establish a feature-by-feature comparison with Google Keep. In particular, it is not enough to conclude that Joplin duplicates Keep’s reminders, collaboration, or capture workflow. Before moving your everyday notes, check the functions you depend on and confirm that your current import or export path preserves them. Also consider whether you prefer plain Markdown and configurable tools or a simpler, more managed experience.
A practical decision checklist
- Need offline access? Joplin’s offline-first design keeps notes accessible on the device without an internet connection.
- Want end-to-end encryption? Plan to enable it and follow the setup instructions; do not assume it is on by default.
- Want synchronization? Choose a destination deliberately and review the provider’s data practices as well as Joplin’s.
- Care about portability? Joplin stores notes in Markdown; check how that format fits your existing notes and export or import needs.
- Prefer a low-maintenance app? Weigh the flexibility of plugins, themes, and sync choices against the extra decisions they require.
