To preserve a prerendered shell in a current Next.js Cache Components app, keep request-specific cookies() reads inside a small component rendered beneath a React <Suspense> boundary. Leave stable, shared interface elements in the layout or page shell, and give the cookie-dependent region a meaningful fallback. First confirm the project’s Next.js version and rendering configuration: current Cache Components guidance and the older Next.js 15 experimental PPR setup are different models.

Why a cookie read in a layout can be the wrong fit

cookies() reads request-specific data. A layout, meanwhile, is shared across route segments and cached during client navigation; it does not rerender just because a user navigates. Next.js explains that “Layouts are cached in the client during navigation to avoid unnecessary server requests.” Consequently, a cookie value read in a shared layout is not a reliable way to make that layout’s content update on every client-side navigation.

There are two separate questions: whether the API can be called in a layout, and whether that work fits the route’s desired rendering behavior. The current layout reference demonstrates an async layout reading await cookies(), but the current Cache Components guide says request-time APIs need to be deferred within Suspense or handled through caching when appropriate. For cookie-personalized content that should not prevent the rest of the route from entering the prerendered shell, isolate the read rather than placing it in broad shared rendering.

Check which Next.js rendering model the project uses

Do not copy a setup instruction without checking the application’s framework version and configuration. The current documentation and the versioned Next.js 15 guide describe different configurations:

Documented model Configuration and behavior What to do
Current Cache Components guidance Cache Components are opt-in with cacheComponents: true; PPR is described as the default prerendering behavior in this model. Follow the current Cache Components guide for request-time APIs and Suspense boundaries.
Next.js 15 versioned PPR guidance PPR is documented as experimental and enabled with experimental_ppr. Treat this as version-specific historical setup, not as a universal configuration for current projects.

Next.js 15 also made Dynamic APIs such as cookies() asynchronous. Use await cookies() in current code. A Next.js 14 reference may show synchronous syntax, but it should only be applied to a project that is actually using that older version.

Isolate the cookie-dependent region beneath Suspense

Keep the shared shell stable, then place a narrow async component beneath Suspense for the part that needs the cookie. This conceptual example uses the current asynchronous API:

import { Suspense } from 'react'
import { cookies } from 'next/headers'

export default function Page() {
  return (
    <>
      <SiteHeader />
      <Suspense fallback={<AccountFallback />}>
        <CookiePersonalizedContent />
      </Suspense>
    </>
  )
}

async function CookiePersonalizedContent() {
  const theme = (await cookies()).get('theme')?.value
  return <AccountPanel theme={theme} />
}

In this shape, the fallback can be part of the prerendered shell while the cookie-dependent component resolves at request time. Put the boundary close to the component that reads request data: a boundary around a small personalized panel can preserve more of the surrounding route in the shell than one around a broad page region.

The example is a pattern illustration, not a tested reproduction. Adapt the component and fallback to the project’s exact Next.js version and configuration. The Cache Components guide also describes passing request data as props into cached work; the request-aware component must read the cookie rather than implying that a cache scope can directly access request cookies.

Choose the boundary based on what must be personalized

  • Cookie value needed only in a small region: Keep that region in the async component below Suspense and leave unrelated shared UI outside it.
  • Value expected to change on client navigation: Do not rely on a shared layout to rerender on navigation. Place the request-dependent behavior where its lifecycle and freshness requirements are handled explicitly.
  • Output can be safely cached: Use an appropriate caching approach for the work, while keeping request-specific cookie access in the request-aware component and passing needed data onward as props.
  • Cookie appears to be needed across the entire shared shell: Reconsider whether all of that UI truly needs request-specific data at shell-render time. A broader dynamic region can reduce what remains prerenderable.

Give the Suspense fallback a useful shape—such as a stable account-panel placeholder—so the shell remains coherent while personalized content resolves. Avoid making the boundary wider than the UI that actually depends on the cookie.

Verify the result in the build, not by assumption

  1. Confirm the project version and configuration. Identify whether it uses current Cache Components or the version-specific Next.js 15 experimental PPR configuration before changing code.
  2. Build the application. Use the build output to check whether the route was fully prerendered and whether the intended shell is present.
  3. Inspect browser page source. Check what entered the shell and whether the fallback appears there as expected.
  4. Exercise the personalized region. Confirm that the cookie-dependent output resolves for the request and that the fallback is appropriate while it does.

Next.js’s production checklist warns that Dynamic APIs can opt a route into Dynamic Rendering and notes that use in a root layout may have application-wide effects. Interpret that warning in the context of the project’s version and rendering mode; current Cache Components guidance specifically describes deferring request-time APIs under Suspense as a way to preserve a prerendered shell.

What this pattern does not establish

The official documentation explains the rendering behavior but does not provide a directly applicable performance measurement for this implementation. Treat the pattern as a way to control which work belongs in the prerendered shell, not as evidence of a particular speedup. Build output and page-source inspection can verify rendering behavior for the application, but they do not substitute for workload-specific performance measurements.
