To keep familiar conversations easy to find, turn on Screen Unknown Senders. iPhone places messages from unfamiliar senders in a separate filter, leaving known conversations in the main Messages list. In iOS 26, go to Messages > Filters > Manage Filtering, then enable Screen Unknown Senders. This screens unknown senders; it is not a separate “known senders only” switch.
Turn on unknown-sender screening in iOS 26
- Open Messages.
- Tap Filters in the conversation list.
- Tap Manage Filtering.
- Under Unknown Senders, turn on Screen Unknown Senders.
You can also use Settings > Apps > Messages, scroll to Unknown Senders, and turn on Screen Unknown Senders. These steps and labels reflect Apple’s instructions available on October 7, 2026; labels may change in later iOS versions. Apple Support documents the feature in its current iPhone instructions.

Find a screened message and move a sender to your main list
Open Messages > Filters > Unknown Senders to review screened conversations. A badge indicates new messages in that filter. If a message is from someone you want to recognize, open the conversation and tap Mark as Known. You can also tap the sender’s phone number or email address and create a contact.

Replying by itself does not necessarily move the conversation: Apple says, “If you respond to a message from an unknown sender, that will not automatically mark the sender as known or move the message to your conversation list.”
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
Check the setting after an iOS update
In iOS 26, Screen Unknown Senders is off by default. Apple says it remains on after upgrading if Filter Unknown Senders was enabled in iOS 18. If unfamiliar messages still appear in your main list, check the current iOS 26 setting rather than looking for the older label.
Choose which unknown messages can notify you
Go to Settings > Apps > Messages > Unknown Senders > Allow Notifications to manage notifications for selected categories. Apple lists Time Sensitive, Personal, Transactions, and Promotions; available choices vary by country or region. Time Sensitive notifications, such as verification codes, alerts, or urgent requests, are on by default. Messages allowed to notify can appear in the conversation list for eight hours before returning to Unknown Senders.

Know how screening differs from other message controls
- Screen Unknown Senders separates unfamiliar conversations from the main list; it does not block delivery.
- Text Message Filter can sort eligible unknown SMS, MMS, and RCS messages into Transactions and Promotions. It requires enabling Text Message Filter and any desired third-party message-filtering extensions. The sorting does not apply to a sender you have replied to three times or more.
- Spam filtering and reporting identify or report suspected junk. Reporting spam does not itself stop that sender from messaging again.
- Blocking is the control that prevents a sender’s messages from being delivered.
Apple’s instructions for screening and filtering are available in its iPhone Messages support guide and iPhone user guide. Feature availability and notification options can vary by region.
