Humanoid robots coordinate their joints through a layered control system: high-level software plans actions, real-time controllers turn them into coordinated commands, and communication networks carry sensor and actuator data on schedule. The key is not simply connecting every component; it is keeping fast feedback predictable while perception and planning run at higher levels.

What a humanoid robot’s control system does

A humanoid’s joints cannot be treated as unrelated motors. Walking, balancing, and manipulation depend on many actuators responding to sensor readings in a coordinated way. A useful architecture separates that work into layers, as shown in PAL Robotics’ ROSCon 2024 presentation:

  1. Applications: perception, motion planning, and behavior decide what the robot should do.
  2. Real-time controllers: functions such as state estimation, whole-body control, walking, and grasping translate goals into control actions.
  3. Real-time frameworks and communication: software components exchange state and commands.
  4. Operating system: hard- or soft-real-time scheduling supports time-sensitive work.
  5. Control computer: one or more computers run the control stack.
  6. Communication bus: a fast, reliable network connects control computers, drives, and devices.
  7. Physical devices: motors, sensors, and other hardware act on or measure the robot.

The boundary between layers is an engineering decision. Planning may produce a desired motion, but a lower-level execution path must read current sensor state and update actuators at a controlled cadence. As joint count, communication load, or dynamic demands increase, timing variation and congestion can affect how the robot responds.

Why predictable timing matters

Real-time control is about meeting deadlines consistently, not merely achieving a high average update rate. A controller that receives data late or sends commands unevenly can make coordinated movement less predictable. The low-level system matters because higher-level locomotion planning and control depend on it: Sygulla and colleagues describe overall humanoid performance as strongly determined by the low-level control system in their 2018 study of the LOLA humanoid.

That study evaluated an EtherCAT-based architecture on LOLA and reported control rates beyond 2 kHz and input/output latency below 1 ms. Those are results for that system and study, not a required cycle rate or a guarantee for every humanoid or EtherCAT installation.

Which communication networks can connect the robot?

There is no single network choice established as best for every humanoid. A design may use one network throughout or combine links according to traffic, topology, timing, and component availability.

Network option Potential role What the cited material establishes
EtherCAT Distributed communication for drives and control I/O. The LOLA study evaluated an EtherCAT-based architecture and reported its system-specific timing results. Study record.
Ethernet with time-sensitive networking (TSN) Deterministic or higher-speed connectivity, including backbone links. NXP describes TSN and EtherCAT in its humanoid motion-control solution; Infineon discusses high-speed Ethernet backbones and TSN for synchronization and availability. These are vendor descriptions, not independent comparative tests. NXP; Infineon.
CAN or CAN FD Local or zonal communication, potentially alongside faster network segments. Infineon describes combining CAN/CAN FD with Ethernet and EtherCAT in a zonal architecture; it does not establish a universal topology. Infineon.

For example, a robot can aggregate local device traffic in zones and connect those zones to central compute over a higher-speed link. The appropriate design depends on the devices and their data, rather than on a claim that one bus is universally superior.

Compare the requirements, not just the bus names

  • Deadline predictability and jitter: can the control path meet its timing requirements consistently?
  • Update rate and end-to-end latency: how quickly does sensor information lead to an actuator response?
  • Synchronization: do distributed controllers and devices need a shared time base?
  • Bandwidth and node count: how much traffic must the network carry, and how many devices must connect?
  • Topology, wiring, and power: how will links be routed through the robot, and what are their physical constraints?
  • Fault handling and safety integration: what happens when a link, controller, or data stream fails?
  • Component and software fit: are compatible drives, interfaces, tools, and engineering expertise available?

The cited material does not provide a controlled, apples-to-apples benchmark of EtherCAT, TSN, and CAN for the same humanoid workload. A ranking that ignores the robot’s topology and requirements would therefore be misleading.

Where ROS 2 and ros2_control fit

ROS 2 can organize software components and interfaces in a humanoid stack, but using ROS 2 does not by itself make the complete robot hard real-time. Predictable actuation depends on the whole implementation: executor and middleware behavior, operating-system scheduling, hardware interface, communication bus, controller code, and system configuration.

PAL Robotics’ architecture presentation distinguishes higher-level applications from real-time execution and names frameworks including Orocos, ros_control, YARP, OpenRTM, and ros2_control as examples in the framework or communication layer. The ros2_control Foxy documentation describes hardware components that abstract communication with physical equipment, including system, sensor, and actuator types; a system component can represent complex hardware such as a humanoid hand. Foxy is a specific, older ROS 2 distribution, so implementation details should be checked against the documentation for the distribution actually in use.

How to choose a controller and network for a specific robot

A specific controller, bus, or hardware model cannot be selected from the word “humanoid” alone. The design depends on the robot’s joints, actuators, encoders, sensors, compute platform, control workload, timing targets, and safety requirements. Work through those requirements before choosing components:

  1. Inventory devices and interfaces. Record the actuators, drives, sensors, and I/O, along with the communication interfaces each supports.
  2. Define timing needs. Specify update rates, end-to-end deadlines, synchronization needs, and acceptable timing variation for each control function.
  3. Map traffic and topology. Estimate control and sensor bandwidth, node count, and where local zones or central links make sense.
  4. Choose the execution boundary. Decide which functions need predictable real-time execution and which can run as higher-level perception, planning, or behavior applications.
  5. Verify the complete chain. Check controller role, host operating system, compatible drives and I/O, network support, connectors, fault behavior, and safety integration.

Vendor component families can help identify plausible processors, controllers, and communication technologies, but they are not a universal bill of materials. For example, NXP describes motor-control and connectivity options for humanoid and mobile robots, while Infineon outlines zonal communication possibilities. Neither establishes that a particular board or network is right for every design.

Plan for failures at both local and central levels

A distributed system creates failure boundaries. A lost link, stale sensor state, overloaded network, timing fault, or controller reset can disrupt coordinated movement. The architecture should specify safe behavior both near each actuator or zone and at the central-control level, including what happens when communication is lost or data is no longer trustworthy.

Deterministic communication can support a control design, but choosing a bus alone does not make a robot safe. The cited vendor material identifies safety and security integration as concerns; it does not establish a complete functional-safety design or a certified safety standard for a particular humanoid. Safety behavior must be designed and validated for the actual robot and its intended use.
