Syncthing can keep full-resolution photos in a folder on your computer without a Syncthing cloud account or storage subscription. It synchronizes files between devices you configure; it does not turn that second copy into a complete backup. Deletions and unwanted edits can sync too, so pair it with versioning and a separate backup if you need recovery protection.

What Syncthing does—and what it does not

Syncthing exchanges files directly between configured devices when they can connect. You choose a folder on the phone and a physical destination path on the computer. It is not a hosted Syncthing cloud storage service, and the computer needs to be available for synchronization to occur. See the official Getting Started guide and the Syncthing FAQ.

The local folder gives you another copy of the photo files, but synchronization mirrors changes: new files, edits and deletions propagate. If you delete a photo on one device, that deletion can reach the other. If both devices make different edits to a file before syncing, Syncthing may preserve a renamed sync-conflict file; inspect it rather than assuming one version is the one you wanted. The Synchronization documentation for v1.29.6 describes this behavior.

Choose the computer’s destination folder

Use a dedicated folder for the incoming photo library so it is easy to find, size, and back up. In Syncthing’s folder configuration, the receiving device uses a physical folder path; choose a location with enough room for the files and any versions or separate backup copies you plan to retain. The documentation does not prescribe a drive capacity.

Destination When it makes sense Trade-off to consider
Computer’s existing storage You already have enough free space for the library and planned recovery copies. Convenient, but the computer’s storage can still fail or be lost.
External drive The computer needs more capacity, or you want the photo folder on removable storage. Consider whether it will remain connected for syncing and how it will itself be backed up.

If existing storage is sufficient, you do not need to buy a drive. Otherwise, an external hard drive or USB SSD can serve as the destination; no particular capacity, model, speed, or price is established here.

Set up synchronization between the phone and computer

  1. Install Syncthing on both devices. For Android, account for the app-status distinction described below before choosing an installation.
  2. Pair the devices by exchanging their device IDs and accepting the connection on each side. Pairing must be mutual.
  3. On the phone, select the folder containing the photos you want to synchronize and share it with the computer.
  4. On the computer, accept the shared folder and choose the dedicated physical destination path.
  5. Allow the devices to connect, then check that expected files and folders appear at the destination before treating the transfer as complete.

The official Getting Started guide walks through device pairing and folder selection. Confirm that the selected phone folder actually contains the original-resolution files you intend to keep; Syncthing synchronizes files present in that folder, rather than upgrading reduced-size copies elsewhere.

Android: the official app was retired

The official Android app maintainer announced its retirement on October 20, 2024, writing, “Unfortunately I don’t have good news on the state of the android app: I am retiring it.” The announcement said the last GitHub and F-Droid release would coincide with the December 2024 Syncthing version. Read the retirement announcement for the original status and release details.

Protect photos from synced deletions and disk failure

Synchronization alone is not a recovery plan: a mistaken deletion or edit may propagate, and a failed or stolen computer can take its local copy with it. Syncthing’s file versioning is disabled by default and is configured separately for each folder on each device. It can archive remote changes, but it does not archive changes made locally on that same device. Consult the file-versioning documentation and enable a suitable strategy for the receiving folder if you want protection against remote replacements or deletions.

For protection beyond those archived versions, maintain a separate backup copy that is not simply another synchronized destination exposed to the same deletions. Decide how and where that copy is kept based on the risks you need to cover, such as disk failure or theft.

Check before cancelling cloud storage

  • Confirm the computer has received the expected photos and that the destination folder contains the files you intend to preserve.
  • Make sure the destination has room for the library, any versioned files, and separate backups.
  • Set up recovery beyond synchronization if you need protection from accidental deletion, device loss, or disk failure.
  • Check that the Android app option you plan to use is currently maintained and available through a distribution channel you trust.

There is no universal savings figure: whether cancelling a plan saves money depends on its price and billing period, the local storage you already own or need to buy, and any additional backup costs. Verify the local copy and recovery arrangements before ending cloud storage.
