Claude Code already has documented ways to carry knowledge between sessions: project instruction files and auto memory. Obsidian can be a useful place to organize that knowledge, but a vault does not automatically become Claude Code context. The connection depends on how you make its notes available, and the specific setup behind this first-person headline is not established here. The reliable starting point is to separate instructions Claude Code loads from notes it may consult when needed.
How Claude Code carries context between sessions
A new Claude Code session starts with a fresh context window. Claude Code’s documented memory features provide continuity through two complementary mechanisms: authored instruction files and auto memory. They are context, not a guarantee that Claude will follow every instruction. See Claude Code’s memory documentation.
Instruction files: stable guidance for every session
CLAUDE.md files can hold durable project conventions, architecture notes, and commonly used commands. Claude Code also documents AGENTS.md support; which instructions load depends on project files and settings. Put information here when it should guide work consistently, rather than relying on Claude to rediscover it each time.

Auto memory: selected learnings for later
Auto memory can save selected information, including user preferences, corrections, project context that cannot be derived from code, and useful references. Claude Code stores an index named MEMORY.md alongside more detailed topic files. The index is loaded at session start up to the first 200 lines or 25 KB, whichever comes first; topic files are read on demand rather than loaded automatically.
Current documentation says auto memory is enabled by default in local sessions. It describes storage as machine-local by default, shared across worktrees of the same repository, and not shared across machines or cloud environments. Behavior may differ in background or self-hosted contexts, so check the documentation for the Claude Code version and environment you use.

How Obsidian can fit without being mistaken for a Claude Code feature
Obsidian can be the place you organize project notes, decisions, and reference material, but the cited Claude Code documentation does not establish an automatic Obsidian integration. A vault is not context merely because it exists on disk: you need a defined way to expose relevant notes to Claude Code. That could mean placing selected instructions or notes where Claude Code reads them, or connecting a source through an appropriate tool. The exact mechanism must be chosen and verified for your setup.

As a practical rule, put durable instructions in the instruction files and use memory for selected learnings that are helpful later but do not belong among the project’s always-loaded rules. Keep detailed reference material out of the always-loaded index when it can be retrieved on demand.

Instruction and memory files shape Claude Code’s behavior; they do not enforce it. If an action must happen at a particular lifecycle point—for example, a required check before a commit—Claude Code’s documentation recommends a hook that runs at the specified event. Do not treat a reminder in a Markdown file as a substitute for an enforced step.
