Git can make committed project files and instructions available on another machine, but it does not, according to the product documentation reviewed here, restore a complete Claude Code or Codex conversation. Keep durable project context in the repository, then use each product’s own conversation-resume controls when you need a prior thread.
Does Git sync your coding-agent conversation?
Not on the basis of the documented workflows cited here. Git can carry committed source files, project notes, and instructions. A conversation’s history is separate state: Anthropic documents Claude Code commands for continuing or resuming a conversation, while OpenAI’s Codex project guidance describes a conversation as retaining its history and saved working directory. Neither source describes cloning or pulling a repository as a way to transfer the complete conversation transcript.
This is a limit of the documentation cited here, not a claim that no product could ever provide a transcript export or import feature. The sources do not give a cross-device transcript-transfer recipe, specify where local histories are stored, or guarantee that a session identifier remains usable after a move.
Which kinds of state can move with a repository?
| State | What the documentation supports | What that means when changing machines |
|---|---|---|
| Repository files and project instructions | Codex reads files from the current working tree; persistent project instructions may be kept in AGENTS.md or versioned documentation. OpenAI Codex project guidance |
Commit durable context and make it available through the repository on the destination machine. |
| Claude Code conversation | The CLI reference lists commands to continue the most recent conversation or resume by session ID. Anthropic CLI reference | Use Claude Code’s conversation controls; Git is not documented as transporting the session. |
| Codex conversation | OpenAI says, “The conversation keeps its history and saved working directory, while Codex reads files from the current working tree.” OpenAI Codex project guidance | Do not confuse the working-tree files Codex reads with the conversation history it retains. |
| Codex Goal | OpenAI describes Goals as “persisted thread state, not as global memory and not as project-level instructions.” OpenAI Goals guide | A Goal is not a substitute for committed project instructions. |
| OpenAI Agents API session | The API reference documents operations for Agents API sessions and artifacts. OpenAI Agents API session reference | These API objects are not established as interchangeable with Codex CLI or app conversations. |
What should you commit for useful context on the next machine?
Save information that should remain useful across sessions: project conventions, setup steps, architecture notes, important decisions, and current task status. Codex’s guidance specifically recommends persistent project instructions in AGENTS.md or versioned documentation. Those files travel with the repository when committed.
#1 Best Overall
- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
- Put stable instructions for working in the project in
AGENTS.md. - Put broader reference material in versioned documentation, such as a project README or design notes.
- For a task in progress, record a concise handoff note: the goal, relevant files, decisions made, remaining work, and commands or checks already run.
- Keep secrets and credentials out of committed notes. The cited product guidance does not prescribe committing private transcripts, tokens, credentials, or local configuration; review sensitive material deliberately before adding it to version control.
How do you resume a Claude Code conversation?
Anthropic’s CLI reference lists claude -c (also --continue) to continue the most recent conversation. To resume a particular conversation by its session ID, it lists claude -r "<session-id>" (also --resume); the reference also shows passing a query after the session ID.
claude -c
claude -r "<session-id>"
claude -r "<session-id>" "query"
These commands are product-level conversation controls, not Git operations. The cited documentation does not guarantee that a session ID will work after changing machines, so do not treat it as a portable backup.

- Easily store and access 5TB of content on the go with the Seagate portable drive, a USB external hard Drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
How should you start work from another machine?
- Make the durable context available. Commit the relevant instructions and notes, then check out or pull the project repository on the destination machine.
- Use the project working tree. Codex project guidance says Codex reads files from the current working tree and ties the conversation to a saved working directory. Start from the relevant project tree rather than assuming a repository copy restores a prior thread.
- Choose the right continuity method. Use the product’s documented resume feature when you need a prior conversation. For Claude Code, the CLI reference provides
claude -candclaude -r "<session-id>"; for Codex, the cited guidance describes retained conversation history but does not establish a Git-based transfer workflow. - If the old conversation is unavailable, use the handoff notes. The committed project context can orient a new session, but it is not the missing transcript.
Do not confuse Codex API sessions with Codex conversations
OpenAI’s Agents API reference covers API session operations and artifacts. That documentation does not establish that an Agents API session is the same thing as a Codex CLI or app conversation, or that API sessions provide a way to move those conversations through Git. Keep the API’s session model separate from the project-and-conversation workflow described in Codex project guidance.
What Git does—and does not—provide
Use Git for versioned project context that you intentionally commit. Use product-specific controls for conversation history. The official references cited here support that distinction; they do not document Git as a mechanism to synchronize complete Claude Code or Codex transcripts between machines.
