A new Azure Key Vault secret version does not change the value already loaded into a running Go process. To follow rotations without restarting, a service needs to retrieve the new value and apply it to its configuration and any resources that use it. mamori’s Azure provider can poll Key Vault, load secrets into typed Go configuration, and reconcile that configuration when a secret changes—but the application still needs to accept and apply the update.
What changes when a Key Vault secret rotates?
Key Vault stores secrets in versions. If a Go service reads a secret once at startup, it keeps the resulting value in memory until its own code retrieves and applies a replacement. Creating a newer version in the vault does not push that value into the process.
mamori provides a configuration-loading and reconciliation layer for this case. Its Azure provider resolves Key Vault references, and its watch path checks for changes and updates the resulting configuration. The provider polls rather than receiving native Key Vault change notifications, so updates follow a polling cadence—not an instantaneous event-driven push. See the mamori project article and Azure provider documentation.
Choose whether to load once or keep watching
| Approach | How it behaves | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| One-time load | Load configuration at startup and leave it unchanged for the process lifetime. | Simpler when secrets change only during deployment; a rotation is not reflected until the application reloads configuration or restarts. |
| Continuous watch | Poll for changes, revalidate the resulting configuration, and swap in an updated configuration when accepted. | Can let a service react to rotation without a restart, but depends on polling and on application code applying the new configuration and updating resources that use it. |
Write a Key Vault reference
The Azure provider accepts references in this form:
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
azure-kv://<vault-name>/<secret-name>[#json-key][?version=<v>]
azure-kv://my-vault/db-passwordresolves the latest version.azure-kv://my-vault/api-key?version=abc123pins the reference to the specified version.azure-kv://my-vault/creds#passwordselects thepasswordfield from a JSON-valued secret.
An omitted or empty version means latest. Use latest when the service should follow new versions; pin a version when you need explicit control over which value is consumed. A pinned reference does not follow later versions automatically. The provider reference documents the URI grammar and behavior at mamori’s Azure provider documentation.
Install and register the Azure provider
The Azure integration is a separate Go module, github.com/xavidop/mamori/providers/azure, built on Azure’s azsecrets SDK. The provider documentation shows installing the provider module and registering it with a blank import so mamori can resolve azure-kv:// references.

Configure Azure authentication and authorization
The provider authenticates through Azure DefaultAzureCredential. Depending on the environment, that credential chain can use sources such as local environment credentials, managed identity, or Azure CLI credentials. Selecting a credential source is not the same as granting it permission: the identity used at runtime must have read access to secrets in the target vault.
- Choose the identity your service will use in its deployment environment.
- Grant that principal the necessary Key Vault secret-read access for the target vault.
- Run the service with credentials for that identity and verify it can retrieve the intended secret.
Microsoft’s Go quickstart demonstrates the azsecrets and azidentity packages and shows granting access through an Azure role assignment: Create a secret in Azure Key Vault using Go.

Make a refresh safe for the running service
A configuration update is useful only if the service can adopt it. mamori’s reconciliation path revalidates configuration and atomically swaps in the resulting configuration, but application-owned resources may have their own lifecycle. For example, a database pool initialized with an old password may need an update callback or equivalent code to build and use a pool with the replacement credential.
- Validate the new configuration before switching consumers to it.
- Update or recreate resources that captured the old value, such as connection pools or clients.
- Define what happens if validation or resource replacement fails; avoid discarding a working configuration before its replacement is ready.
- Ensure the application’s consumers read the current configuration rather than retaining an old copied value indefinitely.
Polling frequency and jitter affect when a change is discovered, while validation and resource updates affect when the application is actually ready to use it. The cited provider documentation does not establish a measured end-to-end refresh latency.

Operate polling without overloading Key Vault
Microsoft recommends caching secret values rather than requesting them on every use, both to reduce API calls and to help avoid throttling. It also recommends refreshing cached values when secrets rotate, retrying transient and throttling failures with exponential backoff, and monitoring access. mamori’s polling interval and jitter are configurable; those controls do not replace sensible retry behavior, caching, or access monitoring in the service’s overall design. Enable Key Vault logging and review access as part of operations. See Secure your Azure Key Vault secrets.
Keep Key Vault for secrets, not general configuration
Key Vault secrets are string-valued data intended for items such as credentials, connection strings, passwords, and access keys. Microsoft advises keeping secret values concise and using a separate configuration service for ordinary settings such as IP addresses, service names, and feature flags. A secret can be up to 25 KB, according to Microsoft’s Key Vault secrets overview. Where a credential has multiple components, a properly formatted connection string or JSON object can keep related values together.
Quick Recap
When this approach fits
- Use one-time loading when configuration is intentionally fixed for a process lifetime and deployment or restart is an acceptable way to adopt rotations.
- Use continuous watching when the service should respond to secret rotation while it is running, and you can safely reconfigure dependent resources.
- Use latest-version references for credentials expected to rotate; use explicit version references when controlled adoption of a particular version matters more than following the newest one automatically.
