You can mute calls overnight without muting your Android alarm. Set a non-silent alarm sound, raise the alarm’s own volume, and check that Do Not Disturb (DND) or the active mode allows alarms. The exact controls depend on your phone and Android version; Samsung Galaxy phones also have a Clock-specific alarm-volume slider and a system-sound option to check.
Set the alarm sound and volume
Call or ringtone volume and alarm volume are separate controls on many Android phones. Muting calls therefore does not necessarily mute an alarm, but it is worth checking the alarm’s own sound and volume rather than relying on the call-volume setting.
- Choose an audible sound. Open Clock, select the alarm, and tap its sound setting. Choose a device sound or another supported sound source; do not leave the alarm set to silent. Google warns that an alarm with a silent ringtone and vibration turned off will not go off audibly. Google’s alarm help explains how to edit alarm sound and troubleshoot alarms.
- Raise alarm volume. Use your phone’s volume controls and look for the alarm-volume control. Google’s troubleshooting guidance warns that alarm volume below 30% may be too low. That is a warning threshold, not a guarantee that 30% will be loud enough in every room or for every listener.
Allow alarms in Do Not Disturb
DND can silence calls while allowing alarms, but the active mode’s notification filters must permit alarms. On Android 14 and later, Google’s documented path is Settings > Modes > Do Not Disturb > Notification filters. Allow Alarms & other interruptions, then set the People or calls options to block or allow calls as you prefer. Labels and menus can vary by phone and Android version. See Google’s guide to Modes and Do Not Disturb.
Check schedules as well as the mode you turned on manually. A bedtime or other automatic DND schedule may apply different filters from the ones you expect, so inspect the active mode’s schedule and alarm permissions.

The current Modes menu described above is for Android 14 and later; settings on other versions may differ.
Samsung Galaxy: check Clock-specific settings
On a Galaxy phone, the Samsung Clock app provides an alarm-volume slider and an option that can silence alarms when system sound is off. Samsung notes that menu layouts vary by model and software version. Its instructions are for Galaxy phones and tablets, not a universal Android path.

- Open Clock > Alarm, edit the alarm, open Alarm sound, and move the alarm-volume slider up.
- In Clock, open Alarm > More options > Settings. If you want alarms to sound while system sound is off, turn off Silence alarms when system sound is off. When enabled, this setting can silence alarms in that system-sound state.
- If all audio is muted, check Settings > Accessibility > Hearing enhancements > Mute all sounds. Samsung says this feature mutes media, notifications, system sounds, and even the other person’s voice during calls; volume adjustment is unavailable while it is enabled.
- Review Galaxy DND at Settings > Notifications > Do not disturb, including its allowed exceptions and volume settings.
