To keep a Google Drive file ID intact, update or rename the existing Drive file—do not delete it and upload a replacement. Google says a file ID is unique and opaque, and remains stable for the life of that file even when its name changes. That ID is not the same thing as the filename or the local path an AI-memory app may use.

Without API access, manage the file through Drive on the web or Drive for desktop, then check the AI app’s documentation to learn whether it follows a path, filename, or Drive ID. Seeing a file at the same local path does not prove that a connector retained or can read the original Drive ID.

What stays the same—and what may not

Google’s developer documentation says, “File IDs are stable throughout the life of the file, even if the file name changes.” The ID belongs to the Drive object. A filename is a label, while a local path is where software finds a file on a particular computer. Those are separate identifiers, and Google’s documentation does not establish that an arbitrary no-API AI connector uses or preserves Drive IDs.

Accordingly, the reliable identity-preserving action is to keep working with the same Drive item. Renaming it does not change its ID. Deleting it and uploading another copy creates a different lifecycle operation; the reviewed Google documentation does not say the new upload inherits the deleted file’s ID.

Six pitfalls that can disrupt an AI-memory workflow

1. Mistaking a local path for the Drive ID

A desktop app may open a file by a path such as a folder and filename, while Drive identifies its cloud item with a separate opaque ID. A file appearing at the same local path is not proof that it is still the same cloud object. Check the AI application’s own documentation for what it tracks, and avoid treating path continuity as ID continuity.

2. Replacing the item instead of updating it

When identity matters, edit or rename the existing Drive item rather than deleting it and uploading a replacement. Verify that item in Drive after the change. Google documents ID stability for an existing file, not ID inheritance by a newly uploaded copy.

3. Changing streaming or mirroring before sync finishes

Drive for desktop offers two modes for My Drive. Streaming keeps files primarily in the cloud and requires Drive for desktop to access them on a computer; mirroring stores files both locally and in the cloud for offline access. Mirroring therefore uses local disk space, while streaming depends on the app and an internet connection to access cloud-only files. Google notes that applications that write extensively may work faster with mirrored files.

Switching modes can affect local content: if local and cloud versions differ when you move to mirroring, Google says both copies may be kept. Before changing modes or cleaning up folders, check Drive for desktop’s sync status. Google’s guidance is explicit: “To avoid data loss, make sure your files are fully synced before you delete or move folders.” Shared drives can only be streamed under Google’s current guidance.

4. Pointing multiple sync clients at the same live folder

Google Workspace warns that syncing a folder with Drive for desktop and another syncing service can cause files not to sync with Drive or to be removed from Drive entirely. Do not direct a second sync or backup service at the active AI-memory folder unless its behavior is known and supported. Keep any separate backup workflow out of the live sync directory.

5. Copying a Google Docs pointer as if it contained the document

Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides can appear in the local Drive folder as small shortcut files that open in a browser. They are pointers, not ordinary local copies of the document content. Google Workspace Admin guidance says third-party sync clients cannot back up, upload, or copy these pointer files. If the AI memory is a native Google document, edit it through Drive or a supported browser workflow rather than expecting a third-party file copier to carry its contents.

6. Resolving conflicts without checking access or paths

Permission failures, an inaccessible or deleted original, and incompatible local and cloud changes can prevent local edits from updating the original. Google’s troubleshooting guidance notes that edited content may remain in a copy when the original cannot be updated. A separate path issue can arise if a folder is replaced by a shortcut: the absolute local path may change, so an external app may need to be pointed to the new path.

Before deleting anything to resolve a conflict, review Drive activity and Drive for desktop notifications. Confirm which copy contains the latest content and whether the account has permission to update the original.

Choose a Drive for desktop mode for the way the app works

Mode Offline access Local storage Application considerations
Streaming Cloud-only files require Drive for desktop and an internet connection; files can be made available offline. Uses less local storage for files kept in the cloud. Check that the AI app can work with streamed files and the way Drive for desktop presents them locally.
Mirroring Files are stored locally and in the cloud, supporting offline access. Uses disk space for the local copy. Google notes that some applications that write extensively may work faster with mirrored files. Check for differing local and cloud copies when switching.

Google’s current help guidance says My Drive supports either mode, while shared drives can only be streamed. Mode selection affects local availability and app compatibility; it does not change the principle for preserving identity: keep the existing Drive object and let sync finish before moving or deleting folders.

A safer no-API workflow

  1. Identify the source item. Open Drive on the web and confirm which existing file is the AI-memory source. Do not assume that a matching local name identifies the same Drive item.
  2. Make changes to that item. Edit it in Drive or through the supported Drive for desktop workflow. Rename the existing item if needed; do not use delete-and-reupload as a substitute for an update.
  3. Check sync completion. In Drive for desktop, wait until the file and relevant folder show that syncing is complete before moving or deleting folders or changing modes.
  4. Check the AI app’s file reference. Consult its documentation or settings to determine whether it opens a local path, matches a filename, or supports a Drive-specific reference. Do not assume that a no-API app can inspect or retain the Drive ID.
  5. Investigate conflicts before cleanup. Review Drive activity, sync notifications, and permissions; compare the cloud item with any local or conflict copy before removing either one.

Sources and scope

These Google sources describe Drive IDs and Drive for desktop behavior; they do not establish how a particular AI-memory app resolves concurrent edits or whether it stores a Drive ID, path, or filename. Confirm that detail with the app’s documentation.
