For a SaaS import scheduled every 15 minutes, use error tracking to diagnose application and API failures, and a separate heartbeat to detect when the import stops checking in. Send that heartbeat only after the import meets its defined success criteria; a running web API does not prove the scheduled job completed.
What each kind of monitoring tells you
Request telemetry and a scheduled-job heartbeat answer different operational questions. FastAPI’s OpenTelemetry support covers request traces, metrics, and logs, helping you investigate activity and failures in the API. A heartbeat from the import job answers whether that expected process checked in. Keep the import monitor distinct from a public API health endpoint. The web service can remain healthy while a scheduler, worker, or import itself is stalled; a dedicated monitor identity makes that difference visible.
When to send the import heartbeat
Send the heartbeat after the import has passed its meaningful completion checks, not merely when the job starts. Otherwise, a run that begins and then fails could still appear active. Decide in advance how partial completion is treated: if some records can fail while the import is considered successful, encode that policy in the job’s success condition.

This is an implementation practice based on how heartbeat checks work, not a guarantee that the monitoring service validates the import’s result. The monitor sees the check-in; your application must decide whether it is justified.
Capture FastAPI and Django failures with framework context
FastAPI: request traces, metrics, and logs
FastAPI’s observability documentation describes OpenTelemetry traces, metrics, and logs. It says the standard extras include packages for sending telemetry, and shows OTLP configuration with OTEL_SERVICE_NAME and OTEL_EXPORTER_OTLP_ENDPOINT. It also notes that unhandled exceptions are recorded as OpenTelemetry logs linked to the request or connection trace, even when that trace is not sampled. Read FastAPI’s observability guidance.
Exception messages and stack traces can contain sensitive information. Review what your instrumentation exports and use filtering or redaction through log processors where appropriate.

GlitchTip’s Django setup uses sentry-sdk and a DSN, with tracing configuration available as an option. Its documentation says the SDK auto-detects Django and captures unhandled view exceptions, middleware errors, and SQL query breadcrumbs. Configure and verify the monitor
- Define success. Specify the checks that mean an import is complete, including how partial success is handled.
- Give the scheduled job its own monitor. Do not rely on the API’s health check to stand in for the import’s check-in.
- Send the heartbeat after success checks pass. Make the check-in part of the successful completion path.
- Configure alerting for the associated project. GlitchTip says an uptime monitor can be associated with a project that has email alerts configured. Confirm the intended recipients and delivery settings.
- Test a missed check-in outside production. Verify that the monitor changes state and that the expected alert arrives before depending on it operationally.
Check interval and service limits before relying on a 15-minute schedule
GlitchTip’s uptime documentation says hosted monitor requests count as subscription events, but does not establish a minimum interval, plan-specific interval limits, or notification-delivery limits. Confirm the current configuration available for your installation or subscription before treating it as suitable for a strict 15-minute service level. GlitchTip uptime documentation.
When evaluating a monitoring setup, check the actual heartbeat interval, alert configuration and delivery, framework-specific exception context, supported telemetry signals, hosted versus self-hosted deployment, and how events or data volume are counted. GlitchTip documents that it does not expose a raw OTLP HTTP receiver for logs. OpenTelemetry-format log records need to be wrapped in a Sentry envelope by the SDK. This is a logs-specific compatibility detail; it should not be generalized to traces or metrics. Read GlitchTip’s log documentation.
