Keel’s honesty gates are three checks intended to keep unsupported information and uncertain application outcomes from being treated as facts: answer from the applicant’s stored information or abstain, park unresolved commitments, and require explicit confirmation before recording a submission as complete. The public project prepares a packet for a person to review and submit; it does not submit applications. These are the project author’s descriptions of the design, not a guarantee that failures cannot occur.
1. It answers from the applicant’s answer bank—or abstains
Keel’s first gate is about the source of form responses. The project describes an answer bank containing information the applicant has supplied, with provenance about what was stated and when. When a form asks for something the bank does not support, the resolver is supposed to report a gap rather than invent an answer. The official Keel repository likewise describes the answer bank as the source of truth and says unsupported qualifications are not made up.
In the article’s demo, two questions receive answers drawn from synthetic applicant data, while an unsupported salary-history question is marked [ABSTAIN]. That is an illustrative demo, not a real applicant case or an independently measured result.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2. It parks unresolved commitments instead of proceeding
Before a launch packet moves forward, Keel’s described prescreening gate checks a job posting against the applicant’s policy and available information. For example, the article’s demo parks a posting that requires five days a week in the office when the applicant’s stated cap is three days. The lead goes to a needs-input queue rather than proceeding.
#1 Best Overall
Other reasons the article says a lead may be parked include an unverifiable posting, a required question that cannot be mapped to supported information, or a missing attestation. The repository also describes prescreening as parking commitments and unmappable required questions for input.
“Parked” does not mean rejected or objectively unsuitable. It means the lead awaits the applicant’s personal resolution of the issue.
3. It leaves ambiguous submission attempts unknown
The third gate concerns what happens after a submission attempt in the private execution flow described by the author. If a network timeout makes it unclear whether a server accepted a POST, the attempt is recorded as UNKNOWN, remains open, and is not retried. The article says the system refuses another attempt for the same role while that open intent exists, reducing the risk of a duplicate submission.

In the demo, that evidence is an Ashby confirmation page displaying “Application submitted” and a reference number. This is an example from the demo, not evidence that Ashby is required or that the project supports applicant-tracking systems broadly. These implementation details are the author’s account of the private loop and demo, not an independent code audit.

What the public project does—and does not do
The public Keel workflow ends with a launch packet containing job context, completed materials, and outstanding questions for a person to review and submit. The official repository distinguishes this public workflow from a private execution layer and says the public loop never submits applications. Calling the public project an application-submission bot would therefore misstate the described boundary.

The article author, Trent Wade, describes the gates as biased toward abstaining, parking, and under-claiming when support is missing or an outcome is unclear. He also explicitly cautions that the gates do not prevent every failure mode. “Refuses to lie” is the project’s framing, not a guarantee of perfect accuracy.

The reported submission counts are dated and come from different sources and contexts; they should not be combined into one performance measure:
| Source and date | Reported figure | What it represents |
|---|---|---|
| Trent Wade’s article, September 22, 2026 | 210 verified submissions | The article’s stated private-loop ledger figure; not independently audited and not evidence that the gates caused successful applications. |
| Official repository README, September 23, 2026 | 208 verified submissions | A separate private-production-pipeline figure, with a distinct breakdown: 201 evidenced, 1 pointer, 0 URL-only, and 6 unevidenced. |
The sources do not explain the difference between these figures. They also provide no independently published study of gate accuracy, applicant outcomes, or comparative effectiveness, so neither a success rate nor a claim that this approach outperforms another is established. Wade’s article discloses that it was AI-written and published through an automated pipeline.
