Start with a fresh user account. It is the safer first test when you need to know whether a KDE Plasma problem belongs to your current profile or to the wider system. The new account uses separate settings, widgets and startup state while sharing the installed Plasma packages, graphics stack and hardware. If the symptom disappears, investigate the original profile. If it remains, move on to components shared by both accounts.

Use a distribution-provided “Safe Mode” or failsafe session only after you have verified exactly what that option changes on your distribution. “Safe Mode” is not a single, consistently defined Plasma session across Linux distributions.

The decision in one minute

Your question First choice What the result tells you
Could a setting, widget, login script or other personal state be causing this? Fresh user account A symptom that disappears points toward the original profile.
Does the distribution offer a session that deliberately disables or changes particular components? That distribution’s documented Safe Mode or failsafe session The result is useful only for the components the distribution says it changes.
Does the problem occur for more than one account? Investigate shared system components Look at packages, updates, graphics drivers, session configuration and hardware, while remembering that mixed causes are still possible.

A fresh account is an isolation experiment, not a repair. It does not tell you which file is wrong, and a successful test does not prove every system component is healthy. A Safe Mode label, meanwhile, has no universal meaning that can be assumed from the name alone.

What each method actually changes

Fresh user account

A separate ordinary account starts with a different home directory and a new set of personal Plasma settings. Your installed desktop, applications, kernel, graphics hardware and most machine-wide configuration remain shared. That makes the comparison relatively clean: you change profile state without reinstalling Plasma or altering the original account.

The account should be ordinary rather than an administrator unless your distribution requires otherwise for a particular test. Keep the original account logged out while creating the test account, and reproduce the same action that triggers the fault. Use the same display, monitor arrangement, session type and physical peripherals whenever practical.

Distribution-provided Safe Mode or failsafe session

A login-screen entry called Safe Mode, failsafe, recovery or a similar term may be supplied by the distribution, display manager or a custom desktop integration. Its implementation can vary with the distribution, Plasma release, display manager and whether you use Wayland or X11. One option might start a reduced session; another might alter effects, services, drivers or startup behavior. The available evidence does not establish one current behavior shared by all distributions.

Do not infer that a Safe Mode session disables widgets, compositing, third-party services or graphics acceleration unless your distribution’s documentation says so. Record the exact option label and read its local description before treating a difference as evidence.

Why the fresh-account test is usually the best first move

Plasma stores a substantial amount of behavior per user. A malfunctioning panel layout, widget, keyboard shortcut, theme, script or login application can affect one profile while leaving another untouched. Comparing two accounts therefore answers a focused question: does the symptom follow the profile?

KDE’s long-standing troubleshooting guidance uses this logic, although its older example refers to the legacy ~/.kde directory. That path should not be copied as current Plasma 6 file guidance. The useful principle is the account comparison, not the old location.

The test is also reversible. You can leave the new account untouched, remove it later using your distribution’s user-management tool, and continue working in the original profile. Nothing in the test requires deleting Plasma configuration or reinstalling packages.

How to run a reliable fresh-account comparison

  1. Write down the symptom. Note what you clicked or typed, the visible failure, when it began, the distribution and Plasma version, and whether the session is Wayland or X11 if you know. Include whether the issue affects one display, a particular application or the whole desktop.
  2. Create a separate ordinary account. Use the distribution’s user-management settings or its documented account-creation procedure. Give the account a distinct name and a password you can use during the test. Do not copy the original home directory or dotfiles into it; doing so would contaminate the comparison.
  3. Log into the same kind of session. At the login screen, select the comparable Plasma session, display and monitor arrangement. If the original session is Wayland, use Wayland for the comparison when that option is available; do the same for X11.
  4. Reproduce the exact trigger. Follow the same sequence, open the same application, connect the same monitor or peripheral and wait long enough for the original failure to appear. Change one variable at a time.
  5. Record the outcome. Write down whether the symptom is absent, reduced, different or unchanged. “It feels better” is less useful than noting exactly which action now works.
  6. Return to the original account only after the comparison. Preserve the test account until you have finished recording results; it can serve as a control for later changes.

Keep hardware and session conditions comparable, but do not spend hours making the accounts visually identical. The goal is to compare behavior, not to recreate every preference.

How to interpret the result

Observation Most useful next step What it does not prove
The problem appears only in the original account. Inspect that account’s Plasma settings, widgets, startup entries, scripts and application-specific state. It does not identify the exact file or setting responsible.
The problem appears in both accounts. Investigate shared software, system updates, graphics drivers, display/session configuration and hardware. It does not guarantee that every cause is system-wide; two accounts can share a trigger while also having separate issues.
The symptom changes but does not disappear. Compare the precise differences: timing, display, application and session. Test again with one condition changed. A partial change is not proof that the profile is the only cause.
The new account cannot reproduce the original workflow. Install or enable only what is necessary for a fair test, or mark the result inconclusive. Absence of a feature that was never present is not a clean bill of health.

A clean result narrows the search to profile-specific state; it does not authorize deleting the entire home directory. A failure in both accounts justifies widening the investigation, not immediately blaming the kernel or hardware.

Where profile-specific Plasma behavior commonly hides

Autostart applications and login scripts

KDE’s Autostart documentation identifies several personal locations:

  • $HOME/.config/autostart/ for applications and login scripts started for the user.
  • $HOME/.config/plasma-workspace/env for scripts run before the Plasma workspace starts.
  • $HOME/.config/plasma-workspace/shutdown for scripts run during logout.

A user-only failure can therefore come from an application or script that launches before the panel, window management or another desktop component is ready. Review files in these locations rather than assuming the shell itself is defective. Disable one item at a time, log out and back in, and note the result so that you can restore the prior state.

Widgets, layouts and shell state

Panels, applets and their arrangement are stored separately from the installed Plasma binaries. A corrupted or incompatible widget can produce symptoms such as a missing panel, a frozen desktop, repeated shell restarts or a failure that appears only after login. Compare the original and test accounts before changing anything; the difference itself is valuable evidence.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Applications with their own startup behavior

Some KDE applications manage autostart independently and can continue running in the system tray. The absence of an entry in the desktop’s Autostart Manager therefore does not prove that no user application launches at login. Check the application’s own preferences and tray behavior when the account test points to startup state.

When a Safe Mode session is worth trying

Use a Safe Mode or failsafe session when you have a documented reason to isolate a component that the fresh account leaves unchanged. Examples might include a distribution’s documented reduced graphics path or a session that omits a known class of startup services. The important condition is verification: the mode must have a known difference relevant to your symptom.

Verify the local definition first

  1. Capture the exact name shown by the login screen or recovery menu.
  2. Read the distribution’s current documentation for that release.
  3. Check whether the option changes the display server, graphics acceleration, desktop effects, services, user configuration or only the recovery environment.
  4. Note whether the option creates a temporary session, changes files, or requires a reboot.
  5. Run the same reproduction steps and record which conditions differ from the normal session.

If the documentation does not state what changes, treat the result as an observation rather than a diagnosis. A symptom that disappears may reflect any unverified difference in the session.

Why labels can mislead

Plasma is customized extensively by some distributions. Two systems can show similar login-screen wording while starting different services or configuration. A “safe” session on one distribution may not disable the same feature on another, and a mode documented for an older release may no longer match the current implementation.

Investigating shared causes after an account test

If the symptom reproduces in both accounts, work through components the accounts share. Check whether a system update, Plasma update, graphics-driver change or new package preceded the failure. Confirm the selected display server and display-manager configuration. Test with the same monitor and peripherals disconnected or reconnected in a controlled order. Finally, consider hardware faults or firmware issues if the problem affects more than the desktop.

This is a diagnostic inference from the comparison, not a guarantee that the fault is entirely system-wide. A shared graphics problem can coexist with a profile-specific widget problem, so keep the original account’s findings recorded while you broaden the search.

Resetting Plasma configuration without destroying evidence

Do not begin with a “factory reset” if an account comparison can answer the narrower question. Resetting files removes clues and can make it harder to identify the trigger.

Back up before moving anything

A KDE Discuss reply dated March 4, 2026, recommends backing up two Plasma shell-related files before removing them:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • ~/.config/plasmashellrc
  • ~/.config/plasma-org.kde.plasma.desktop-appletsrc

The advice is community guidance for a limited reset, not an official, complete reset procedure. Another reply in the same discussion notes that Plasma-related data also exists elsewhere, including under ~/.local/share. A reset of the two files cannot be described as a universal return to factory defaults.

A cautious backup and test pattern

  1. Create a dated directory in your home folder for the backup.
  2. Copy the two files into it, preserving their names and permissions.
  3. Log out of Plasma so the shell is no longer actively writing those files.
  4. Move the originals aside rather than deleting them. Moving allows an immediate rollback.
  5. Log in and test the specific symptom.
  6. If nothing improves, restore the originals and investigate another cause. If the behavior changes, compare the old and new state before rebuilding your layout.

Use your distribution’s normal file tools and confirm each path exists before moving it. Do not remove an entire ~/.config or ~/.local/share tree as a first-line experiment; that can reset unrelated applications and erase useful evidence.

A practical troubleshooting sequence

  1. Describe the failure precisely. Include distribution, Plasma release, session type, displays, recent changes and an exact reproduction sequence.
  2. Run the fresh-account test. Keep the new account clean and use comparable hardware and session settings.
  3. Branch on the result. An original-account-only failure leads to profile inspection; a failure in both accounts leads to shared-component checks.
  4. Inspect personal startup state. Review the three documented Autostart locations and application-specific tray or startup settings.
  5. Verify any Safe Mode option. Use it only with a documented understanding of what it changes on that distribution and release.
  6. Back up before resetting. Preserve the shell configuration files and any other relevant data before moving or removing them.
  7. Change one thing at a time. Log out and back in when a change affects session startup, and record the outcome.
  8. Escalate with evidence. When seeking help, provide the symptom, account comparison, session type, Safe Mode definition and the exact changes already tested.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Calling the new account a factory reset

It is not. The test account shares installed software, drivers, hardware and machine-wide settings. It isolates personal state while leaving the system largely intact.

Copying dotfiles into the test account

That transfers the very configuration you are trying to test. Start with the new account’s defaults and add only the minimum application or permission needed to reproduce the workflow.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assuming Safe Mode has a standard Plasma meaning

The label is distribution-specific. Identify the implementation before using a pass or fail result as evidence.

Deleting configuration before making a backup

Deletion removes the ability to compare or roll back. Move files to a dated backup location first and keep the original account available.

Treating a clean test as proof that the system is healthy

The second account can avoid a profile trigger while both accounts still share a graphics, package or hardware fault. Interpret the result as a narrowed search area, not a complete diagnosis.

Choosing the method by symptom

Symptom pattern Most informative first test Reason
Panel, widget, shortcut or desktop layout behaves incorrectly after login. Fresh account These features commonly depend on per-user shell and applet state.
An application launches unexpectedly or a script runs at login. Fresh account, followed by Autostart inspection Personal startup entries and application-managed tray behavior can differ by account.
Both accounts show the same rendering corruption or session crash. Shared-component investigation; then a documented Safe Mode test if relevant The account comparison has already shown that changing the profile is insufficient.
The distribution documents a reduced graphics or failsafe session for the exact problem. That documented Safe Mode option Its value comes from the known component change, not the label.
You are unsure what “Safe Mode” changes. Fresh account It provides a defined profile comparison without relying on an ambiguous session label.

What a good report should contain

When the two tests do not settle the issue, report the facts that make the comparison reproducible: distribution and release, Plasma version, Wayland or X11, display manager if known, the exact login option used, account-specific versus shared results, recent updates, and the files or startup entries changed. Say whether the test account was kept free of copied configuration. This prevents helpers from treating an account test as a factory reset or treating a distribution-specific Safe Mode as a universal Plasma feature.
