No—not for every function. A Kasa switch can still be operated at the wall during an internet outage, and TP-Link says its locally loaded timers and schedules continue running. Remote control from away from home and voice-assistant commands are different: they rely on an internet connection and cloud services.

What works when the internet is down?

Switching the light at the wall

A Kasa wall switch is still a physical switch connected to an electrical circuit. If the switch and power supply are working, you can use it at the wall without an internet connection. An internet outage does not, by itself, cut power to the circuit.

Timers and schedules

TP-Link says Kasa Timer and Schedule functions are loaded locally on the device, so they continue during an internet outage. That does not mean every app feature works offline; the documented offline behavior applies specifically to timers and schedules. TP-Link’s Kasa FAQ also notes a difference in how those functions respond to manual actions: manually or app-triggered on/off actions can stop a Timer, while a Schedule continues.

What needs an internet connection?

Remote control while you are away

To control a Kasa switch remotely through the Kasa app, the device must be set up and connected to the internet. If your home internet is down, you should not expect to reach the switch from outside the home. TP-Link describes remote control as an app feature available from anywhere when the device is connected. Its remote-control troubleshooting guidance also identifies the internet connection as a requirement.

  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Voice assistants

TP-Link describes Kasa voice-assistant integrations as cloud-to-cloud, with the device needing to be online. As a result, do not count on voice commands through a connected assistant during an internet outage. Which assistants a switch supports depends on the model; check its product information rather than assuming every Kasa switch has identical compatibility. TP-Link’s Kasa FAQ explains the cloud connection, and its voice-assistant FAQ lists compatibility information.

App control at home

Offline app control is not established as a general capability for every Kasa switch. TP-Link confirms local operation for timers and schedules, but that is not a blanket promise that the Kasa app can control every switch locally when the internet is unavailable. For an outage, rely on the wall control and previously loaded schedules or timers rather than assuming app or voice commands will work.

Does setup require internet?

Plan on having the Kasa app, a TP-Link cloud account, and a connection to your home Wi-Fi during setup. TP-Link’s BLE setup instructions describe these requirements for the models they cover. The article lists a defined group of BLE-capable models, so it should not be treated as the setup guide for every Kasa switch.

Check your exact switch model

The HS200 is one example of a Kasa switch, not a stand-in for the whole range. TP-Link describes it as a Wi-Fi light switch that connects to an existing router and does not need a separate hub. Its product page says a secure home Wi-Fi connection is required and describes app-based control from anywhere. The HS200 product page and HS200 user guide provide model-specific details, including schedules and listed voice-control services.
