Karpathy’s LLM Wiki is a workflow for turning source material into a persistent, linked Markdown knowledge base that an AI agent can build and maintain. It is not a single official application or a prescribed technical stack: you can use an agent with ordinary Markdown files, optionally managed in Obsidian, and define the rules for how it creates and updates pages.

What Karpathy’s LLM Wiki is

The LLM Wiki pattern uses an agent to process source material into durable, organized pages. Those pages link ideas and preserve accumulated synthesis for later questions. Karpathy’s idea file is intended to be copied into an agent and adapted with the user, rather than installed as a turnkey product. The original file is listed as created April 4, 2026, in the GitHub Gist listing; the preserved idea text is available in a fork that identifies itself as derived from Karpathy’s file.

How an LLM Wiki differs from RAG

In a conventional retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) workflow, a system searches source documents when a question is asked, then uses selected passages to generate an answer. In the LLM Wiki pattern, an agent first synthesizes source material into a set of linked pages that persist between questions. The distinction is where accumulated synthesis lives: in the wiki pages, rather than only in an individual answer.

That is a design distinction, not evidence that every wiki setup is more accurate or effective than RAG. One implementation README reports PPR @5 of 27.1% versus a pure-kNN baseline of 24.1% on the project’s own corpus. That project-specific result does not establish general superiority over RAG or represent an independent comparison of the broader pattern. See the implementation README for its reported benchmark.

Set up a basic LLM Wiki

You can start with a folder of Markdown files and an agent that can read and edit them. Obsidian is an optional editor and graph browser; the pattern does not require it. Obsidian describes its vault-and-notes environment on its official homepage.

  1. Choose where the files live. Create a dedicated Markdown folder, or use an Obsidian vault if you want an interface for editing notes and viewing links.
  2. Keep sources separate from generated pages. Preserve the original documents and give the wiki pages their own area. Require the agent to link claims or pages back to source material so you can check where information came from.
  3. Write the agent’s instructions. Specify page types, naming and linking conventions, source attribution, how to handle uncertainty and conflicting sources, and which files the agent is allowed to change. There is no universal schema in the original idea; these rules are part of your implementation.
  4. Test with one source. Ask the agent to ingest a single document, create or update relevant pages, and record source links. Review the result and revise the instructions before processing more material.
  5. Query and maintain the pages. Try questions that require connections across pages. Check for stale facts, contradictions, duplicate pages, weak source links, and incorrect synthesis; adjust your instructions when issues recur.

Use the guided Obsidian plugin route

The third-party “Karpathy LLM Wiki” plugin README describes a guided setup. Its instructions and behavior are claims by the project’s maintainers, not guarantees about every LLM Wiki implementation.

  1. In Obsidian, open Settings → Community plugins → Browse, find “Karpathy LLM Wiki,” install it, and enable it.
  2. Choose an LLM provider. If the selected provider requires an API key, enter it and test the connection.
  3. Save the settings, then ingest a note to try the workflow.

The README says the plugin leaves original notes unchanged and writes generated pages under a wiki folder. Check the plugin README for the current instructions. The described workflow can vary as the plugin and provider options change.

Choose an implementation by its trade-offs

Before ingesting a large library, compare the practical differences between a direct Markdown workflow and a guided plugin. The plugin README describes both local-provider and remote-provider paths; for any provider, review its current data-handling terms and understand what content or prompts are submitted.

Factor Direct Markdown and agent Obsidian plugin
Setup and control You choose the folder structure, instructions, and ingest process; that flexibility requires you to configure them. The README describes a guided setup with provider settings and note ingestion; behavior follows that implementation’s features.
Data flow Depends on the agent and model you choose, including whether the model runs locally or uses a remote service. The README describes local and remote provider paths. Check the selected provider’s handling of submitted data.
Formats Depends on what the chosen agent can read and process. Check the current plugin documentation for supported inputs; the README’s setup example begins with ingesting a note.
Portability and inspection Markdown pages can be opened and edited with ordinary text tools. The README says generated pages are written under a wiki folder and original notes are not modified; inspect the resulting files and folder layout.
Cost and capacity Depends on the model or service, context limits, and volume of material. Depends on the selected provider and model. The README does not establish a universal cost or capacity figure.

Review the wiki instead of treating it as verified knowledge

Persistent pages make the agent’s synthesis easier to inspect and correct, but persistence does not make it automatically accurate. Review source attribution, verify important claims against the underlying material, and resolve contradictions rather than allowing an unsupported summary to become the durable version of a fact. Revisit pages when their sources change, and remove or correct duplicate and stale material.
