Karnataka’s drought losses could total ₹50,000–₹60,000 crore once assessments are complete, Deputy Chief Minister and Revenue Minister G Parameshwara said on October 3, 2026. That is a projection, not a finalized loss figure: the state had assessed 177 of 217 declared drought-hit taluks, with 40 still under assessment.

What the ₹50,000–₹60,000 crore estimate means

Parameshwara described the range as the possible consolidated loss after assessments across the affected taluks. The October 3 report by The Economic Times, citing PTI, attributes the estimate to his remarks to reporters. It is a state projection, not a final total or an independently audited measurement.

The same report said the state’s second memorandum to the Centre recorded approximately ₹46,000 crore in losses for the 177 assessed taluks. A September report gave a more precise assessed figure of ₹46,324.5 crore for those taluks. These are dated, state-reported figures at different points in the assessment process; neither should be confused with the projected consolidated range.

How many taluks have been assessed?

As of the October 3 report, Karnataka had declared 217 taluks drought-hit. Assessments were complete in 177, while work was continuing in the remaining 40, which had been added to the drought-hit list on October 1. The state said a third and final memorandum would be submitted after assessments and Central inspections were complete.

Loss estimates, relief requests and the 2023 comparison

Different figures in coverage refer to different things. The assessed loss is not the same as the amount Karnataka has requested for relief, and neither is interchangeable with a historical estimate from another drought year.

Why recent rain may not change the crop-loss estimate

Parameshwara said recent rain could help drinking-water availability but was unlikely to significantly benefit crops. He also said the drought situation would not be determined solely by recent rainfall, and that Central teams would be briefed on conditions from May through September. That distinction matters: rain may ease immediate water pressure without reversing crop damage attributed to earlier conditions.

A separate snapshot from an August briefing should not be mistaken for the final season total. Public TV reported that Karnataka received 465 mm of rain against a normal 666 mm between June 1 and August 26, 2026—a 30% deficit for that period.

What happens next

The state’s stated next steps are to finish assessing the 40 declared drought-hit taluks, complete Central inspections, and then submit a third and final memorandum. The 22 not-yet-declared taluks were also due for ground-truthing. Until those steps are complete, the projected ₹50,000–₹60,000 crore range remains provisional; the sources available as of October 3 do not provide a final consolidated 2026 memorandum.

How drought responsibility is divided

The Comptroller and Auditor General’s 2025 performance audit of drought management describes three elements of the work: assessing and monitoring drought intensity, declaring drought and prioritizing areas, and developing and implementing management strategies. It says the state government has primary responsibility, while the Centre supplements state efforts and provides additional resources such as foodgrains and financial assistance. The audit’s historical figures and institutional findings do not independently verify Karnataka’s 2026 estimate.
