Kalshi and Polymarket are not interchangeable prediction-market services. Kalshi operates a U.S. exchange designated by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), while the CFTC identifies Polymarket US (QCX LLC) as a separately designated contract market. Other Polymarket interfaces may have different legal treatment and access rules. Their contracts also differ in currency, fee disclosures, market eligibility, and settlement procedures. Before trading, verify which legal entity and interface you are using, read the exact contract rules, and check the current fee schedule.
Quick verdict: which platform is right for which trader?
Choose Kalshi when U.S. regulatory status, identity verification, dollar-based account handling, and an exchange rulebook are your primary requirements. Kalshi states that it operates as a CFTC-regulated exchange under the Commodity Exchange Act and describes full KYC, federal reporting, and market surveillance. Its rules also exclude several violent-event categories.
Choose Polymarket only after confirming that you are using an interface available in your jurisdiction. Polymarket’s documentation describes shares priced from $0.00 to $1.00 in USDC, with each fully collateralized YES/NO pair backed by $1.00 USDC and the winning side paid $1.00 USDC at resolution. The counterparty is another user, not a house. Polymarket US is the U.S. entity identified as a CFTC-designated contract market; that designation should not be assumed to cover every Polymarket interface worldwide.
Neither service is automatically “cheaper.” Kalshi publishes an official exchange-and-clearing fee schedule, but the schedule page available for this comparison did not expose numeric rates. Polymarket’s public documentation explains pricing and settlement but does not provide a complete, directly comparable numeric fee table. Fees can change by market, liquidity condition, account jurisdiction, and effective date, so compare the live checkout or order-preview cost rather than an old headline rate.

What Kalshi and Polymarket actually are
Kalshi is a regulated event-contract exchange
Kalshi lists event contracts whose outcomes are determined under exchange rules. Its policy center says, “Kalshi operates as a CFTC-regulated exchange under the Commodity Exchange Act.” The CFTC’s June 23, 2026 complaint identifies KalshiEX LLC as a CFTC-designated contract market since November 3, 2020.
The designation places Kalshi inside a federal derivatives framework. It does not make a trade risk-free or guarantee that a forecast will be correct. It does mean that the venue operates with obligations concerning customer identification, reporting, surveillance, listed-product governance, and enforcement. Kalshi’s policy materials specifically describe full KYC, federal reporting, and surveillance.
Polymarket has more than one legal perimeter
Polymarket is best understood by separating its interfaces and legal entities. The same brand name can refer to a U.S. product or to an interface serving other jurisdictions. The CFTC complaint identifies QCX LLC, doing business as Polymarket US, as a CFTC-designated contract market since July 9, 2025. That fact concerns Polymarket US; it is not a blanket statement that every Polymarket website or account is a U.S.-regulated exchange.
Check the legal entity in your account disclosures, the countries accepted during onboarding, and the terms that apply to deposits, withdrawals, and disputes. A change in residence, product availability, or local law can change whether an account may trade even when the interface looks familiar.
Regulation, legality, and access
What the CFTC designations mean
| Platform or entity | Regulatory fact | Date reported | Practical meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| KalshiEX LLC | CFTC-designated contract market | Designation effective November 3, 2020; identified in a June 23, 2026 CFTC complaint | U.S. exchange rules, surveillance, reporting, and product-certification requirements apply to the designated market. |
| QCX LLC, doing business as Polymarket US | CFTC-designated contract market | Designation effective July 9, 2025; identified in the June 23, 2026 CFTC complaint | The U.S. Polymarket product has a regulated perimeter; other Polymarket interfaces may not share it. |
A designation is not the same as universal permission to trade from every country. Eligibility can depend on residence, identity, account type, product approval, sanctions rules, and local law. Treat “legal in the United States” as an account-and-product question, not as a conclusion based only on a company name.

Kalshi’s market restrictions
Kalshi says it does not list markets concerning war, death, nuclear war, assassination, kidnapping, rocket explosions, or missile strikes. These exclusions are part of its stated policy perimeter. A contract that appears to concern a similar subject may still be unavailable if its wording falls within a prohibited category.
What a regulated status does not promise
- It does not guarantee a profit or predict the outcome of an event.
- It does not freeze fees, market availability, or contract wording permanently.
- It does not remove the possibility of fraud, insider-information misuse, outages, or a disputed interpretation.
- It does not make another interface, affiliate, or international version subject to the same rules.
Fees: why a simple price comparison is misleading
Kalshi’s fee disclosure
Kalshi maintains an official fee-schedule page for its exchange and clearinghouse. The schedule is the authoritative place to check charges, and its effective date matters. The schedule page available for this comparison did not expose numeric rates, so quoting a single “Kalshi fee” would create false precision. Review the fee shown for the specific contract and order size immediately before submitting an order.
Also distinguish the contract price from the total cost of a transaction. A displayed price represents the market’s current offer or bid; exchange and clearing charges can be added separately. A partial fill can produce a different total fee than an order that fills all at once, depending on the schedule in force.
Polymarket’s fee information
Polymarket’s primary documentation explains how shares are priced and settled but does not provide a complete numeric fee table that can be compared directly with Kalshi’s schedule. Do not assume that a share price of $0.40 means your all-in cost is exactly $0.40. Check the order screen, market terms, and any applicable account or network charge in your jurisdiction.
How to compare the real cost
| Cost question | Kalshi | Polymarket |
|---|---|---|
| Published numeric schedule | Official exchange-and-clearing schedule exists; numeric rates must be checked on the live page and by effective date. | No complete comparable numeric fee table was established in the cited primary documentation. |
| Displayed contract value | Use the quoted bid/ask and contract terms for the selected market. | YES/NO shares are quoted from $0.00 to $1.00 USDC. |
| Possible market-specific charges | Check the contract and current schedule. | Check the specific market and order preview; documentation does not establish one universal rate. |
| Currency-related consideration | Review Kalshi’s current product terms and funding instructions. | Trading and payout documentation uses USDC, so conversion or transfer costs may matter. |
For a defensible comparison, record the page date, contract, side, quantity, displayed price, exchange or platform fee, any clearing or network charge, and the amount you would receive if the position wins. Repeat the check after a fee-schedule update or when switching markets.

Markets: catalog scope and product rules
Kalshi’s catalog is constrained by certification and policy
Kalshi’s listed products are governed by its rulebook and product-certification materials. The rulebook version identified in the available materials is version 1.29, dated August 17, 2026. Product certification means that the contract’s wording, outcome definitions, and settlement process are part of an approved rule framework rather than an informal question created by a trader.

If you are looking for a topic involving war, death, assassination, kidnapping, nuclear war, rocket explosions, or missile strikes, expect it to be unavailable or worded outside those prohibited categories.
Polymarket’s catalog must be checked market by market
Polymarket documentation establishes the share and settlement mechanics, but the available materials do not support a fixed list of every category or a claim about permanent catalog breadth. Listings can open, close, or become unavailable based on jurisdiction, resolution timing, liquidity, and platform policy.
Do not infer that two similarly worded markets cover the same event. Compare the event definition, cutoff time, source, determination authority, and treatment of revisions. A market about an announced result can settle differently from one about a certified result even when the titles look almost identical.
How the contracts work
Polymarket’s $1.00 USDC share model
Polymarket’s FAQ states that shares are priced from $0.00 to $1.00 USDC. Each YES/NO pair is fully collateralized by $1.00 USDC. When the market resolves, shares representing the correct final outcome are paid $1.00 USDC each. The counterparty is another Polymarket user rather than a house, and a position can be sold before the event is known.

That model creates several distinct prices. The quote you see is the current market price, not a probability guarantee. The price can move as information arrives, and selling before resolution realizes the prevailing market value rather than the eventual $1.00 payout. A winning share held through resolution receives the stated payout; a losing share does not become a partial payout merely because its price once traded higher.
Kalshi contracts require the individual rule set
Kalshi’s exchange and rulebook determine the contract specification, but the available materials do not establish one universal payout formula that applies to every listed product. Read the market page for the exact outcome definition, price increment, expiration or observation window, source, and settlement language. The rulebook version and any market-specific supplement control if a title is ambiguous.
Side-by-side mechanics

| Regulatory entity cited | KalshiEX LLC, a CFTC-designated contract market since November 3, 2020. | QCX LLC (Polymarket US), a CFTC-designated contract market since July 9, 2025; other interfaces require separate checking. |
| Settlement currency | Use the current product terms and account instructions; no universal currency statement is established here. | USDC; winning shares pay $1.00 USDC each at resolution. |

How settlement works—and where disputes arise
The six questions to answer before you trade
- What is the exact event? Identify the measurable outcome, not just the headline. Determine whether the contract asks about an announcement, a vote, a measurement, a ruling, or a final certification.
- Which source controls? Find the named government agency, official publication, exchange, statistical release, or other source. A news report may describe an event without being the source that controls settlement.
- Who determines the result? Note whether the platform, an exchange official, a designated administrator, or another authority makes the determination.
- When is the observation window closed? Check the cutoff date and time, time zone, and whether an event after the cutoff is ignored.
- How are challenges or reviews handled? Read the market’s review, challenge, correction, and appeal provisions. The process can differ between platforms and between products.
- What happens if the source revises its data? Determine whether the first release, a later revision, or a certification controls. Never assume that a revised number will be treated the same way on both venues.
A practical settlement sequence
- Open the market’s full rules, not only the short title.
- Copy the resolution source and cutoff time into your trading notes.
- Record the platform’s determination authority and any challenge deadline.
- Check the settlement currency and payout mechanics for the exact product.
- After the event, verify the source publication and wait for the platform’s official resolution.
- If the result appears inconsistent with the stated source, use the documented review or support process before the deadline.
Why identical wording can produce different outcomes
Suppose two markets ask whether a policy will be “approved.” One may require a formal vote; another may use an announcement by a named agency. If the vote occurs but implementation is delayed, one contract can resolve YES while the other remains unresolved or resolves NO. Similarly, a statistic revised after the initial release can matter on one platform and not the other. The title is not the contract; the rule text is.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Market integrity, surveillance, and trading risk
The CFTC’s February 2026 advisory reported enforcement cases involving misuse of nonpublic information and fraud in prediction markets traded on KalshiEX. These cases illustrate why surveillance and enforcement obligations matter, but they also show that regulation does not eliminate misconduct or trading risk.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Do not trade on confidential information obtained through employment, government access, or a private relationship.
- Do not create misleading activity intended to move a market or induce another user to trade.
- Keep records of the information available when you entered a position and the rule version in force.
- Use position limits that account for a complete loss, delayed resolution, and the possibility that you cannot exit at your preferred price.
- Understand that a regulated venue can investigate, restrict, cancel, or refer activity under its rules.
Liquidity is a separate risk from legal status. A regulated market can still have a wide spread or insufficient bids when you want to exit. On a peer-to-peer model, the absence of a house counterparty means your ability to sell depends on another user accepting your price.

Choosing between Kalshi and Polymarket
Use this decision framework
| If your priority is… | Start with… | Why | Verify before trading |
|---|---|---|---|
| U.S. exchange regulation and a documented KYC framework | Kalshi | Kalshi states that it is CFTC-regulated and describes KYC, reporting, and surveillance. | Account eligibility, current products, and the live fee schedule. |
| USDC-denominated shares and the ability to sell before resolution | Polymarket interface that legally serves you | The FAQ specifies $0.00–$1.00 USDC shares, peer counterparties, and pre-resolution sales. | Whether you are on Polymarket US or another interface, plus transfer and withdrawal rules. |
| Events excluded by Kalshi policy | Neither by default | Kalshi explicitly excludes several violent-event categories. | Whether the alternative platform legally lists the event in your jurisdiction and how it resolves. |
| A known all-in trading cost | Whichever shows the lower live total for your order | Neither source set establishes a permanent, universal rate comparison. | Order preview, market-specific charges, currency conversion, and effective date. |
| Minimal settlement ambiguity | Compare individual contracts, not brand names | Resolution source, authority, timing, and revision rules control the outcome. | Full rule text and challenge procedure. |
Step-by-step checklist before placing an order
- Identify the legal product. Confirm whether the account is using Kalshi, Polymarket US, or another Polymarket interface. Save the entity name shown in the terms.
- Confirm eligibility. Check residence, age, KYC requirements, sanctions restrictions, and whether the specific market is available to your account.
- Read the complete contract. Open the rules, resolution source, cutoff time, determination authority, and challenge language.
- Check the catalog restriction. On Kalshi, verify that the event does not fall within an excluded category. On Polymarket, verify that the market is available on the interface you are legally using.
- Calculate the all-in cost. Include displayed price, quantity, exchange or platform fee, clearing charge, and any currency or transfer cost. Use the live schedule and order preview.
- Match the currency. Confirm how funds enter and leave the account. Polymarket’s documented share and payout mechanics use USDC; follow the applicable instructions for conversion and withdrawal.
- Set a loss limit. Size the position assuming the unfavorable outcome and a delayed or unavailable exit.
- Save evidence. Keep a copy of the contract wording, rule version, fee page, order confirmation, and source publication.
- Monitor resolution. Watch the named source and platform notices. Do not treat a social-media post or preliminary report as final unless the contract says it controls.
- Record the result. Note the resolution time, payout currency, fees, and withdrawal amount for tax and performance records.
Common mistakes and how to fix them
Assuming “Polymarket” is one regulated product
Problem: A trader sees the Polymarket name and assumes the CFTC designation of Polymarket US applies everywhere.
Fix: Identify the legal entity, jurisdiction, and account terms before funding or trading.
Comparing headline prices instead of all-in costs
Problem: A $0.40 quote is treated as the complete cost.
Fix: Add the current platform, exchange, clearing, network, and currency-related charges shown for the order.
Reading only the market title
Problem: Similar titles are assumed to settle identically.
Fix: Compare source, authority, cutoff, revision treatment, and challenge rules line by line.
Confusing a tradable position with a guaranteed payout
Problem: A trader expects to exit at the displayed price or assumes a market will resolve immediately after the event.
Fix: Account for spread, liquidity, review time, and the possibility of holding until official resolution.
Treating regulation as a prediction advantage
Problem: A regulated venue is interpreted as safer from market losses.
Fix: Separate compliance protections from forecasting risk, liquidity risk, information risk, and the possibility of a total loss.
What to monitor after opening an account
- Fee effective dates: Recheck Kalshi’s schedule and any Polymarket market-specific charges after a policy update.
- Rulebook revisions: Kalshi’s identified rulebook version is 1.29, dated August 17, 2026; a later version may govern new contracts.
- Jurisdiction changes: Product access can change when you move, when a service changes its legal entity, or when local rules change.
- Resolution notices: Save the final determination and the source document used to reach it.
- Account records: Retain deposits, withdrawals, fills, fees, payouts, and dates in a ledger suitable for your tax jurisdiction.
Bottom line
Kalshi is the clearer choice for a trader who prioritizes a stated U.S. CFTC-regulated exchange, formal KYC, and a defined rulebook. Polymarket can be attractive when its USDC share model, peer-to-peer liquidity, and available market fit the trader’s jurisdiction and objectives, but the Polymarket US designation should not be generalized to every interface. The decisive comparison is contract-specific: verify the legal entity, live fees, funding currency, resolution source, determination process, and withdrawal rules before committing money.
