Kalshi is reportedly investigating bets on Katie Zacharia becoming White House press secretary after several wagers were placed shortly before her appointment was announced. The timing has drawn scrutiny, but the available reporting does not establish that any trader knew the outcome in advance or committed misconduct.

What bets are under investigation?

The market concerned who would become the next White House press secretary. A News Minimalist summary of a 2026 Wall Street Journal report says the Journal identified three wagers that appeared to anticipate Zacharia’s appointment: a $19 bet placed Thursday evening with a potential return of $1,896, followed by two Friday-afternoon bets totaling $154 with a potential return of $7,712. These amounts and timings are attributed to the Journal through the summary; they have not been independently checked against Kalshi market data. News Minimalist’s October 9, 2026 summary says a Kalshi spokeswoman declined to comment while the inquiry was ongoing.

Does the timing prove traders had advance information?

No. Bets placed before an announcement can prompt questions, especially when they appear accurate, but timing alone does not show what a trader knew or how they learned it. The available summary does not identify the bettors, provide their account activity, or establish that anyone had nonpublic information. It also does not report a finding of misconduct or an enforcement action in this specific market.

The original Journal article was not directly reviewed for this account, and the summary does not provide the contract wording, exact order times, market rules, or resolution status. Those details matter when assessing what a wager meant and whether it violated a rule; none should be inferred from the reported dollar figures.

How does this differ from Kalshi’s separate staff-trading inquiry?

News reports have described another, distinct Kalshi matter involving White House teleprompter operator Gabriel Perez and speech-related trades. CBS News reported that Kalshi investigated that case and referred it to the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC). The Associated Press reported that Kalshi’s policy barred users from trading on information gained through their jobs. CBS News and The Associated Press coverage provides context about the platform’s scrutiny and stated restrictions, but it is not evidence that the Zacharia-market bettors had job-based information or broke a rule.

What is known about the outcome?

The available reporting establishes that Kalshi was reportedly examining the wagers and had declined to comment during the inquiry. It does not establish whether the investigation has concluded, whether a regulator is involved in this specific market, or whether any account faced action. Until Kalshi or a regulator provides a finding, the precise description is that the bets’ timing raised questions and was reportedly under investigation—not that insider trading occurred.
