Choose Kafka when retained event history, replay, data pipelines, and independent consumer groups are central. Start with RabbitMQ for broker-side routing, work queues, per-message handling, and request/reply. Choose NATS for lightweight subject-based service communication; add JetStream when messages need persistence and replay. None is a universal performance winner, and the boundaries overlap more than the old “Kafka for streams, RabbitMQ for queues” shorthand suggests.

How do Kafka, RabbitMQ, and NATS differ?

System Core model Good starting point Trade-offs to examine
Apache Kafka A durable, partitioned log. Consumers track offsets, and retained records can serve multiple independent consumer groups. Event streaming, replay, analytics, and data pipelines. Partition design affects ordering and concurrency; retention affects storage needs. Consider operational ownership and whether the workload needs task-style individual acknowledgements.
RabbitMQ Exchanges route messages to queues, where messages are commonly handled as individual work items. Task queues, routing, retries, priorities, and request/reply. Plan routing topology, delivery and retry behavior, and dead-letter handling. RabbitMQ Streams offer an append-only replicated log with offsets and retention when streaming and replay are needed.
NATS Subjects address messages in a lightweight messaging fabric. Core NATS provides messaging; JetStream adds persistence. Service communication, request/reply, cloud-native systems, and event distribution. Decide whether Core NATS delivery meets the need or whether durable storage and replay through JetStream are required. Validate security and operational design for the actual deployment.

These are starting models, not hard product boundaries. RabbitMQ’s version 4.3 comparison says RabbitMQ has offered a replicated log since 2021 and that Kafka gained queue semantics in 2026. It describes Kafka 4.2 share consumers as acquiring individual messages under a time-limited lock and acknowledging them individually. Those cross-vendor characterizations are from RabbitMQ’s own comparison, so treat them as attributed product guidance rather than a neutral benchmark or a substitute for product-specific documentation.

Which should you use for a particular workload?

Durable event history, replay, and pipelines

Start with Kafka when events need to remain available for later consumption, several independent readers need to progress separately, or a data pipeline and its consumers depend on replay. Consider RabbitMQ Streams or NATS JetStream as alternatives if their protocols, ecosystem, and operational model better suit the system. Compare retention needs and how each consumer tracks progress, rather than choosing by the word “streaming” alone.

Background jobs and task queues

RabbitMQ is a natural first evaluation for jobs that need broker-side routing, per-message handling, retries, priorities, expiry, or scheduled delivery. Kafka 4.2 share groups narrow the historical distinction: RabbitMQ’s comparison describes individual message acquisition and acknowledgements for share consumers. That does not establish that every job workflow has identical behavior across the two systems. Check the semantics your workers require, particularly around failure, retry, and acknowledgement.

Service-to-service communication and request/reply

For lightweight service communication, compare NATS subjects and request/reply with RabbitMQ’s request/reply patterns. Kafka is more compelling when the important requirement is a durable stream of events, not merely a direct service interaction. The choice should follow the communication contract: whether a caller needs a response, whether messages must remain stored, and how consumers address or track them.

Microservice event notifications

RabbitMQ topic exchanges and NATS subjects provide routing or addressing patterns for notifications. Kafka topics make sense when notifications also need retained history and independent readers. Decide how publishers identify destinations and how subscribers make progress; the fact that all three can move messages does not make those models interchangeable.

Stateful stream processing

Kafka is a strong starting point when the application depends on a broad stream-processing and integration ecosystem. Evaluate the specific processing framework and connectors you intend to use, plus the team’s responsibility for operating them. An ecosystem advantage matters only if it matches the application’s actual integrations and operational capacity.

What should you compare before choosing?

Translate requirements into observable behavior before comparing product features. A useful evaluation records the message lifecycle from publication through consumption, including failure paths and how long data must remain available.

  • Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
  • Delivery and acknowledgement: Define what counts as successful publication and processing, and what should happen when a consumer fails partway through work.
  • Routing: Specify whether publishers select a queue, topic, or subject, and whether the broker must make routing decisions.
  • Retention and replay: Set the required history window and identify who may replay messages and how consumers resume.
  • Ordering and concurrency: Determine where ordering matters and how much parallelism the workload needs. For Kafka, partition design is part of this decision.
  • Retries and exceptional messages: Document retry timing, expiry, priorities, and dead-letter behavior for jobs that need them.
  • Operations and ecosystem: Check the deployment, security, monitoring, integrations, and stream-processing components your team will own.

For microservices, decide whether a message is a command that should cause a unit of work, a request expecting a response, or an event that records something that happened. Those contracts often reveal the appropriate messaging model more clearly than a generic “broker” requirement.

Is Kafka, RabbitMQ, or NATS faster?

There is no defensible universal ranking from the available evidence. Throughput and latency vary with message size, producer and consumer counts, batching or chunk fill, persistence and fsync behavior, replication, acknowledgements, compression, hardware, network conditions, and consumer work. A benchmark with differently tuned defaults can compare configuration choices as much as the products.

RabbitMQ’s version 4.3 comparison reports indicative figures: a single quorum queue handles on the order of 80,000 messages per second while replicating and fsyncing each; a single classic queue handles on the order of 100,000 messages per second; and one stream can read several million per second with well-filled chunks. The same RabbitMQ documentation reports sub-entry batching measurements above 4 million messages per second for one stream and above 17 million for five streams. These are RabbitMQ-published figures, not results from a standardized independent three-way test.

NATS documentation describes processing millions of messages per second, sub-millisecond latency, and a memory footprint typically around 15 MB. These are NATS documentation statements, not direct comparisons with Kafka or RabbitMQ and not a performance guarantee for a particular deployment.

A historical KTH study compared Kafka, RabbitMQ, and NATS Streaming, an earlier product that predates modern NATS JetStream. It reported that throughput fell as stronger message guarantees were added and that most tested configurations had latency below 5 ms. Use it to understand why delivery guarantees and configuration affect results, not as a current head-to-head ranking of today’s systems.

How to run a useful workload test

  1. Match the workload: Use representative message sizes, publication rates, consumer counts, and consumer work.
  2. Match delivery requirements: Configure comparable persistence, replication, acknowledgement, and durability expectations instead of comparing a durable setup with a weaker one.
  3. State the tuning: Record batching or chunk fill, compression, hardware, network, and product versions alongside results.
  4. Measure both sides: Record throughput and latency under steady load, and check behavior when consumers fall behind or fail. A peak message rate alone does not describe recovery or application behavior.
  5. Test the actual design: Include the routing, retention, and number of readers the application needs. A result from a single queue or stream cannot establish how another topology will perform.

What do the 2026 version references establish?

The documentation snapshot referenced here was accessed on October 7, 2026. RabbitMQ’s comparison identifies itself as version 4.3. The Apache Kafka 4.2 documentation page says it was last modified February 16, 2026. NATS documentation carries 2026 copyright and describes Core NATS and JetStream. These references provide version context; they do not establish the latest patch release for every product.

The practical point is that older shorthand is incomplete: RabbitMQ has a replicated log option, and Kafka 4.2 share groups add queue-like semantics. These developments broaden what each system can do, but they do not erase differences in routing, retention, consumer progress, or operating model. Choose and test around the behavior your application needs.
