JWT and OAuth 2.0 are not alternatives at the same level. JWT is a format for representing claims in a compact token; OAuth 2.0 is a framework for obtaining and using access to protected resources. Use OAuth when an application needs delegated access to an API. Use JWT when a system has a specific need for claims in that format and the participating systems agree on how to validate them. An OAuth access token can be a JWT, but OAuth does not require it.
What is the difference between JWT and OAuth 2.0?
The distinction is format versus framework. A JWT describes how claims are represented in a token. OAuth 2.0 describes roles and authorization flows through which a client obtains an access token and uses it to reach a protected resource.
| Question | JWT | OAuth 2.0 |
|---|---|---|
| What is it? | A compact claims representation format, defined by RFC 7519. | An authorization framework, defined by RFC 6749. |
| What problem does it address? | How claims are carried in a token representation. | How a client obtains and uses access to a protected resource. |
| Does it define authorization roles and flows? | No, not by itself. | Yes. The framework describes roles such as client, authorization server, resource owner, and resource server. |
| Does it prescribe the access-token format? | It is itself a token format. | No. An OAuth access token may be opaque or use a format such as JWT. |
| Can they be used together? | Yes. JWTs can be used in OAuth-related profiles. | Yes. OAuth can issue JWT-formatted access tokens when the deployment supports the relevant profile. |
In practical terms, OAuth answers how authorization is obtained and conveyed. JWT answers how certain claims can be represented. Neither one, by itself, provides a complete application security design.
When should you use OAuth, JWT, or both?
Use OAuth for delegated access
Choose OAuth 2.0 when an application or service needs permission to access a protected API or other resource. OAuth provides the authorization framework: a client obtains an access token through an appropriate flow and presents it to the resource server. It is the right level of design for delegated access, not merely a choice of token encoding.
#1 Best Overall
Use JWT when its claims format fits a requirement
Choose JWT when the system needs a compact claims representation and the systems exchanging and validating the token have an agreed profile. The format alone does not establish that a token is trustworthy, who issued it, or whether it is intended for a particular API. The receiving system must apply the applicable validation rules.
Use OAuth with JWT access tokens only when the deployment supports that profile
OAuth does not require JWT access tokens. RFC 9068 defines a JWT profile for OAuth 2.0 access tokens, but it is an available profile, not a mandate for every OAuth deployment. The authorization server and resource server must support the same profile and validation expectations. OAuth can also use opaque access tokens, whose interpretation is handled by the relevant server-side system.

Do not treat JWT as a shortcut around authorization design
Choosing JWT does not, by itself, solve session management, revocation, or authorization policy. Decide how tokens are issued, validated, limited to intended uses, and handled if exposed. The token representation is one architectural choice within that design.
Is OAuth 2.0 a login protocol?
OAuth 2.0 is primarily an authorization framework, not a user sign-in protocol. For federated sign-in, OpenID Connect adds an identity layer on top of OAuth. Calling OAuth alone a login protocol blurs the distinction between granting access to a resource and establishing a user’s identity. The IETF’s OAuth 2.0 Security Best Current Practice, RFC 9700, published in January 2025, discusses OAuth’s use as a basis for federated login through OpenID Connect.

What should you consider before implementing either?
- Define the purpose first. If the need is delegated access to a protected resource, design around OAuth. If the need is to represent claims, evaluate JWT as a format within a broader trust and validation model.
- Agree on token validation. A JWT is not trusted just because it parses as a JWT. The issuer, intended recipient, claims, and other applicable rules must be checked under the system’s agreed profile.
- Plan for token misuse. RFC 9700 is the current IETF OAuth security Best Current Practice identified here. It updates security guidance, deprecates less secure or insecure modes, and recommends sender-constraining access tokens where feasible, including mutual TLS or DPoP, to reduce the risk from stolen or leaked tokens.
- Keep format separate from flow. An OAuth implementation can use an opaque token or a JWT-formatted token. The token’s encoding does not change the need to choose and secure an appropriate authorization flow.
How JWT also appears in OAuth deployments
JWT is not limited to representing access tokens. RFC 7523 defines JWT profiles for OAuth client authentication and authorization grants. This is another example of how JWT and OAuth can be composed: OAuth supplies the authorization framework, while a JWT is used in a defined role under a profile.
For standards references, see RFC 7519 (JWT), RFC 6749 (OAuth 2.0), RFC 9700 (OAuth security guidance), RFC 9068 (JWT profile for OAuth access tokens), and RFC 7523 (JWT client authentication and authorization grants).
