JWST is the better primary observatory for finding and characterizing the earliest galaxies. The universe’s expansion stretches the ultraviolet and visible light emitted by those young galaxies into infrared wavelengths, and the James Webb Space Telescope was designed to collect that faint near- and mid-infrared light. Hubble remains essential rather than obsolete: its ultraviolet and visible-light observations provide information Webb does not prioritize and connect new discoveries to decades of deep-field data.
The most accurate answer is therefore conditional. For the first galaxies and the highest-redshift candidates, Webb has the clear advantage. For ultraviolet star-formation studies, visible-light morphology and continuity with Hubble’s archive, Hubble can be the more useful observatory. Many of the strongest results come from using both.
Why JWST has the edge on the first galaxies
The earliest galaxies formed when the universe was much younger than it is now. Their stars emitted substantial ultraviolet and visible light, but that light did not remain at its original wavelength while traveling across expanding space. Cosmological expansion stretched the light into longer, redder wavelengths. By the time it reaches Earth, radiation from very distant young galaxies can fall in the infrared, where Hubble has much less sensitivity and Webb is optimized to work.
Webb also has a larger primary mirror and a design built around sensitive near- and mid-infrared observations. A larger collecting area gathers more photons from extremely faint sources. Its instruments can then disperse that light into spectra, allowing astronomers to measure properties that an image alone cannot provide.

NASA describes Webb’s combination of a large mirror, near- to mid-infrared sensitivity, high-resolution imaging and spectroscopy as enabling searches for the first galaxies. NASA’s Webb fact sheet lists searching for the first galaxies or luminous objects formed after the Big Bang as an explicit Early Universe goal.
What “better” means in this comparison
“Better” does not mean that every Webb image is sharper than every Hubble image, or that Webb replaces Hubble for all astronomy. It means better matched to a particular signal and question. For cosmic-dawn galaxies, the decisive factors are infrared sensitivity, light-collecting capability and spectroscopy. For ultraviolet or visible emission, familiar optical structures and comparisons with legacy deep fields, Hubble remains scientifically valuable.
How cosmic redshift moves the target into Webb’s wavelengths
The basic mechanism
As ancient light from the first galaxies traveled through space, the expansion of the universe stretched ultraviolet and visible wavelengths toward infrared light. This process is called cosmological redshift. The farther away the source, the longer the light has generally traveled and the more the expansion has altered its observed wavelength.
A galaxy can therefore be bright in ultraviolet light at the time it emits that light yet appear primarily at infrared wavelengths when its photons arrive at a telescope near Earth. Detecting the original ultraviolet emission is not simply a matter of making a visible-light camera more sensitive; the signal has moved outside the instrument’s most effective range.
Why wavelength coverage matters
NASA describes Webb’s useful wavelength range as approximately 0.6 to 28.5 micrometres. Hubble is optimized for approximately 0.1 to 2.5 micrometres. The ranges overlap, but they are not equivalent. Hubble reaches shorter ultraviolet wavelengths and covers visible light very well. Webb extends much farther into the infrared, where highly redshifted early-galaxy light is expected.

Longer wavelengths can also pass through some dust that blocks or obscures shorter-wavelength views. Infrared observations do not make every dusty region transparent, but they can reveal stars and galaxies that are difficult to study in ultraviolet or visible light alone.
JWST and Hubble compared for early-universe work
| Comparison | James Webb Space Telescope | Hubble Space Telescope |
|---|---|---|
| Primary wavelength emphasis | Near- and mid-infrared; NASA gives an overall range of approximately 0.6–28.5 micrometres | Ultraviolet and visible light, with an optimized range of approximately 0.1–2.5 micrometres |
| Mirror and photon collection | Larger primary mirror, providing greater light-collecting capability for very faint infrared sources | Smaller mirror than Webb, but highly capable optical and ultraviolet performance |
| Best match to the first-galaxy search | Strongest match because ancient ultraviolet and visible light is shifted into infrared | Useful for shorter-wavelength emission and follow-up comparisons, but less suited to the most redshifted light |
| Reported lookback milestone | NASA reports a galaxy whose light was emitted when the universe was about 460 million years old | NASA reports observations reaching about 500 million years after the Big Bang |
| Imaging | High-resolution infrared imaging, including detailed views of very distant galaxies | High-resolution ultraviolet and visible imaging and the foundation of major deep fields |
| Spectroscopy | NIRSpec and related capabilities can measure redshifts, gas, star formation and chemical composition | Provides spectroscopic and imaging data in its available bands, but does not offer Webb’s far-infrared reach |
| Dust and obscuration | Infrared wavelengths can penetrate some dust more effectively | Shorter wavelengths can be more affected by dust but reveal ultraviolet structures Webb does not prioritize |
| Most useful science question | How early did galaxies appear, and what were their physical properties? | What do early and later galaxies look like in ultraviolet and visible light, and how do they connect to the archival record? |
The table describes each observatory’s strengths, not an absolute ranking. A program that needs ultraviolet emission or a direct comparison with an older Hubble deep field may deliberately choose Hubble even when Webb is available.

How far back have the two telescopes seen?
Hubble’s reported milestone
NASA reports that Hubble has seen back to approximately 500 million years after the Big Bang. Hubble’s deep fields established a large sample of distant galaxies and supplied the reference point against which newer observations are interpreted.
Webb’s reported milestone
NASA reports that Webb detected light from a galaxy emitted when the universe was about 460 million years old. NASA has also described Webb near-infrared images of galaxies that existed when the universe was only about 900 million years old, combined with NIRCam imaging and spectroscopy to obtain redshifts and other galaxy properties.
How to interpret those numbers
The 460-million-year and 500-million-year figures are reported observation milestones, not permanent hard limits on either observatory. A milestone can change as additional data are collected, reductions are improved and candidate objects receive spectroscopic confirmation. The age refers to the universe when the observed light was emitted, not the telescope’s launch date or the date of publication.

Very distant objects are often first identified as photometric candidates: their brightness in several filters is consistent with a high redshift. Spectroscopy provides a stronger measurement by identifying features whose wavelength displacement can be quantified. A candidate should not automatically be described as a spectroscopically confirmed galaxy.
Why Webb’s spectroscopy changes the question
Imaging finds locations and shapes
An image can reveal where a faint source is, how bright it appears in different filters and whether it has a compact or extended structure. Multi-filter imaging can suggest a redshift from the point at which a galaxy’s light drops out of a band, but that estimate depends on models and on the quality of the photometry.
Spectroscopy measures physical evidence
Webb’s Near Infrared Camera (NIRCam) identifies and characterizes sources in images, while the Near Infrared Spectrograph (NIRSpec) can spread their light into spectra. Spectral breaks and emission lines provide redshift constraints. Line strengths and ratios can reveal information about gas, ongoing star formation and chemical composition.
This distinction matters for the early universe. Astronomers are not only asking whether a faint red source exists; they want to know when its light was emitted, how rapidly it was forming stars, what elements its gas contains and whether the population fits theories of galaxy assembly. Webb’s spectroscopy turns a promising point of light into a source that can be tested against those physical questions.
Why an image can still be scientifically decisive
Imaging remains essential. It covers a wider field efficiently, finds objects for later spectroscopy and shows how galaxies are distributed around one another. It can also expose morphology, blending and gravitational-lensing effects that influence the interpretation of a spectrum. The practical workflow is usually complementary: deep imaging locates candidates, then spectroscopy confirms and measures a subset.

What Hubble still contributes
Ultraviolet observations
Hubble reaches ultraviolet wavelengths that Webb does not prioritize. Ultraviolet emission traces hot, young stars and can provide a different view of star formation than infrared data. A study focused on how unobscured young stars affect a galaxy can therefore require Hubble observations even when the same galaxy is also targeted by Webb.
Visible-light structure
Hubble’s visible-light images show structures in bands that are familiar from decades of galaxy research. Spiral features, clumps, tidal distortions and other morphology can be compared directly with extensive archival samples. Webb’s infrared images reveal different stellar populations and dust-affected regions rather than simply duplicating those views.
Continuity with deep fields
Hubble’s Deep Field observations provide a long baseline for measuring how galaxy populations change with cosmic time. Webb extends that baseline toward earlier epochs, while Hubble supplies the shorter-wavelength context needed to interpret what evolves, what remains comparable and which apparent differences are caused by observing the same galaxy at different wavelengths.
A partner, not a predecessor to discard
NASA presents the observatories as complementary. Their wavelength ranges overlap enough for cross-checks but differ enough to expose distinct parts of a galaxy’s light. Combining the data can separate effects caused by dust, stellar age, gas emission or redshift that would be ambiguous in one bandpass alone.

How an early-galaxy result is built
- Survey a field with deep imaging. Webb’s infrared cameras can expose faint, red sources that are difficult to detect in Hubble’s preferred bands.
- Estimate candidate redshifts. Researchers compare the source’s brightness across filters and look for the expected redshifted break. This creates a candidate list, not automatic confirmation.
- Check blending and lensing. Nearby objects, foreground galaxies and gravitational lensing can make a source appear brighter or alter its measured position and shape.
- Obtain spectroscopy. NIRSpec or another suitable instrument disperses the light. A measured spectral feature can establish a more secure redshift and reveal emission from the galaxy’s gas.
- Combine wavelengths. Hubble ultraviolet/visible data, Webb infrared data and archival measurements are compared to infer stellar populations, dust, morphology and evolution.
- Report the evidence level precisely. Results should distinguish a photometric candidate, a spectroscopically confirmed galaxy and a population-level conclusion based on many objects.
Common misconceptions about JWST and Hubble
“Webb sees the first light directly.”
Webb observes light that was emitted by early stars and galaxies and has traveled for billions of years. It does not look outside the universe or see an image frozen at the instant of the Big Bang. The cosmic microwave background comes from a much earlier epoch than the first galaxies and is a different observational target.

“The telescope with the sharper image always wins.”
Angular resolution depends on mirror size, wavelength, instrument and observing conditions. Early-galaxy detection is often limited by how many photons arrive and whether the signal lies in the instrument’s sensitive range, not by a simple sharpness contest. Webb’s infrared reach and collecting area are more important for this particular target.
“Every red object in a Webb image is an ancient galaxy.”
Some red sources are lower-redshift galaxies, stars, blended objects or artifacts. Photometric selection narrows the possibilities; spectroscopy and careful analysis establish what the source is and how distant it is.
“Hubble is obsolete now.”
Hubble still supplies ultraviolet and visible observations unavailable from Webb’s observing strategy, along with an irreplaceable archive of deep fields. Its data can be the key comparison that turns a Webb detection into an evolutionary result.

“The 460-million-year record can never change.”
It is a NASA-reported milestone at the time of the cited observation. Future observations may identify objects from earlier cosmic times or revise the interpretation of existing candidates. Scientific records are updated as confirmation and calibration improve.
Bottom line: use Webb for the frontier, Hubble for the context
For the specific question of which telescope is better for studying the earliest galaxies, JWST is the stronger primary observatory. Its larger mirror, 0.6–28.5-micrometre coverage, infrared optimization and spectroscopy are aligned with the redshifted light from cosmic dawn. NASA reports Webb observations of a galaxy whose light was emitted when the universe was about 460 million years old, while Hubble’s reported reach is about 500 million years after the Big Bang.
That comparison does not make Hubble dispensable. Hubble’s ultraviolet and visible sensitivity, high-resolution imaging and deep-field archive answer different questions and provide essential context. The most informative early-universe programs treat the two telescopes as complementary: Webb finds and measures the most redshifted galaxies, while Hubble shows how those systems relate to the broader ultraviolet and visible-light history of galaxy formation.
