The available interviews do not establish that Phantom Blade Zero composer Cashieng Bo wrote boss music before the bosses were designed. Bo did describe a three-phase encounter built around one melody arranged in sharply different styles. Separately, S-GAME director Soulframe Liang said music can be one of several inspirations for a boss concept. Those are related ideas, but they do not confirm the chronology implied by the original headline.
What Cashieng Bo said about the boss music
In an interview with Game Up News, Phantom Blade Zero composer Cashieng Bo discussed a boss encounter that spans three phases, each with its own score. His aim was to keep the melody recognizable while changing its musical treatment from phase to phase.
“At first I told myself, okay, so the melody needs to stay the same, but the style, the music genre has to be completely different. So, piano solo, classical quartet, but with the Chinese flute on top of it so it still feels like a Chinese game, and heavy metal.”

The idea is musical continuity through contrast: a recurring melody can help a player recognize the same encounter across its phases, while the change in instrumentation and genre makes each phase feel distinct. Bo’s remarks explain the composition approach; they do not say when he wrote the music relative to the boss’s design. Game Up News’ interview with Bo

Can music inspire a boss concept?
Yes, according to S-GAME CEO and director Soulframe Liang, but music is one possible starting point, not a universal rule. In an October 8, 2026 interview with Inven Global, Liang said a boss concept might begin with a flower, a prop, an emotion, or a piece of music. He described the encounter as a combination of elements including its music, stage, scene, entrance, and fighting style. Inven Global’s interview with Liang
Liang’s comments support the idea that music can help shape a boss. They do not show that Bo’s particular three-phase score came first, that the boss was undesigned when he composed it, or that all the game’s boss music follows that production order. WCCFtech reports Liang’s explanation of the relationship between music and boss design as well. WCCFtech’s interview with Liang

What is known—and what is not—about the timing
The two accounts describe different parts of the creative process. Bo explains how a melody changes across phases. Liang explains that music can be among the inputs to a boss concept. Neither interview connects the specific score Bo discussed to a boss that had not yet been designed. So the defensible takeaway is narrower than the headline: music can contribute to boss development, and one encounter’s score was designed around a melody that persists through contrasting arrangements; the sequence of composition and boss design for that encounter is not confirmed.

Epic Games Store describes Phantom Blade Zero as an action RPG drawing on Chinese kung fu and wuxia cinema, combined with modern pop-cultural influences that developer S-GAME calls “kungfupunk.” That context helps explain why the composer’s description pairs a Chinese flute with very different musical styles, but it does not prove a particular design timeline. In the same Epic Games Store feature, marketing director Julius Li estimated that designing a boss fight from scratch through in-game implementation takes roughly one week. That is a reported estimate of the boss-fight workflow—not the time needed to compose its music, and not evidence that composition happens before design. The feature describes the Epic Games Store release window as fall 2026; it gives a seasonal window, not an exact launch date.
Game Up News’ preview also reports 30 weapons, most picked up from defeated bosses. That is the outlet’s preview-reported game content, not an independently established final count. It gives a sense of how closely bosses may connect to rewards, but it does not clarify when their music is written. Game Up News’ preview
