You can split a JSON file in a browser without uploading its contents—but only if the tool processes the file locally and does not send it over the network. For a top-level array, the usual approach is to choose the file, parse it, group its items, and download each group as a separate valid JSON array. This simple method uses browser memory, so it may not work for every large file.

Choose the right way to split the JSON

First check the document’s top-level structure and what the receiving application expects. “Split” can mean different things: dividing an array into batches, or separating an object by its top-level keys. Keep nested values attached to the array item or object property that contains them; splitting inside those values can change the data’s meaning.

Top-level structure Typical split rule What each output contains
Array Group items by a chosen item count A valid JSON array containing one group of original items
Object Group top-level keys A valid JSON object containing the selected key-value pairs

For example, if an API accepts batches of a particular number of records, set the chunk size to that number and split the top-level array. Confirm whether the API expects each batch to remain an array, and whether it imposes any constraints beyond item count.

Split and download a file in the browser

A browser-based splitter should let you select a local file, report invalid JSON clearly, let you choose a chunk rule, and provide separate downloads (or a download-all option). For an array-based workflow, the essential operation is to divide the parsed array into groups and serialize each group as its own JSON array.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. Select the file: Use the page’s file picker or a standard file input to choose the JSON file on your device. The browser’s file-access model requires user action or permission to access files; see MDN’s File System API documentation.
  2. Validate the input: The tool should parse the file as JSON. If parsing fails, stop and show an actionable error rather than producing partial chunks. A basic implementation commonly uses JSON.parse().
  3. Set the split rule: For a top-level array, choose the number of items per chunk. For a top-level object, choose how many keys to include per output, if the tool supports object splitting.
  4. Save the outputs: Download each chunk separately or use a download-all action. A browser may offer a save picker where supported, while a standard download link is a useful fallback. GoogleChromeLabs’ browser-fs-access documentation describes feature detection and fallback methods for opening and saving files.
  5. Check the result: Open a few downloaded chunks and confirm they parse as JSON. Check that the outputs collectively contain the expected original top-level records or keys, with no missing or duplicated entries.

How to check that the file stays on your device

“Browser-based” does not by itself mean “no upload.” Whether contents leave your device depends on the implementation and its network behavior. A local-only tool should process the selected file in the browser rather than transmit its contents to a server. MDN explains that access to ordinary user files is permission-controlled; that security model is not the same as a page’s origin-private file system, which is not visible like a regular filesystem.

Some tool makers state that processing happens in the browser and that files are not transmitted. Treat such statements as the vendor’s claims, not as an independent audit. If you need to verify a tool’s behavior, inspect its network activity. For a sensitive file, you can also load a trusted page and its dependencies, disconnect from the network, and check whether the intended operation still works offline. That check can provide useful evidence for that workflow, but it does not prove that every tool is safe in every circumstance.

What to expect from browser file pickers and downloads

File-opening and save-picker capabilities vary by browser. Chrome’s documentation describes showOpenFilePicker() and writable streams, as well as fallbacks; its example notes that Safari does not support the File System Access API. This is an example, not a complete browser-compatibility matrix. A robust tool should accept files through a standard file input and offer downloads when a save picker is unavailable.

When a tool uses a save picker, the browser may require permission and the user to choose a location. Saving can also fail—for example, because permission is denied, the dialog is cancelled, or there is insufficient disk space. A download fallback can help when the picker is unavailable, but the exact save experience depends on the browser and implementation.

When a browser splitter may not be enough

A simple parse-and-split workflow may hold the input text, the parsed data structure, and serialized output in memory. That can make the page slow or cause it to fail on a very large file. There is no dependable universal file-size limit: practical capacity depends on the device, browser, implementation, and the file’s contents. The JSON Splitter documentation from JLV DevTools also notes that browser memory constrains input size and suggests considering offline splitting for very large files.

If the file cannot be handled reliably in the browser, consider a local command-line workflow or a streaming parser and writer. Streaming can process data incrementally rather than requiring the entire parsed structure and all outputs in memory at once, but the right tool depends on the JSON format and required split behavior. Do not assume a particular maximum size or speed without measurements for your device and workflow.
