JPEG XL uses the .jxl extension and the image/jxl MIME type. It is the royalty-free ISO/IEC 18181 image standard for lossy or lossless pictures, with progressive decoding, high bit depths, wide-gamut colour, HDR, transparency and animation. It can also losslessly transcode an existing JPEG so that the original JPEG can be reconstructed.
Opening and converting a JXL file depends on the application and browser version. The current compatibility table from MDN lists JPEG XL support in Chrome 155, Edge 155, Firefox 158 and Safari 17. Safari waits for the complete file before rendering, so it does not provide progressive JPEG XL download rendering. For a public website, keep a fallback such as AVIF, WebP or JPEG while support continues to vary.
What is a .jxl file?
A .jxl file is an image encoded with JPEG XL, usually abbreviated JXL. The format is standardized as ISO/IEC 18181 and uses the media type image/jxl. JPEG XL is royalty-free, so applications can implement it without a codec royalty requirement.
The extension identifies the container, not one fixed quality setting. An author can encode a photograph lossily to reduce size, or losslessly when every decoded pixel must remain unchanged. The same format can carry still images or animation and can preserve image properties that older web formats often cannot represent together.

JPEG XL capabilities at a glance
| Capability | What it means in practice |
|---|---|
| Lossy compression | Useful when a smaller file is more important than exact pixel preservation. |
| Lossless compression | Decoding reproduces the encoded pixels exactly. |
| Progressive decoding | A compatible viewer can display a useful preview while more image data arrives. |
| High bit depths | More tonal precision is available for imaging workflows that need it. |
| Wide colour gamuts and HDR | Colour and brightness ranges beyond a conventional standard-gamut image can be retained. |
| Transparency | Alpha information can be stored for compositing over another background. |
| Animation | A JXL file can contain multiple frames rather than only one still image. |
| JPEG lossless transcoding | A compatible transcoder can convert an existing JPEG into JXL while retaining a path to reconstruct the original JPEG. |
These features are independent. A file may be lossless but not animated, or HDR but not transparent. Inspect the actual file and the intended output before converting.
How JPEG lossless transcoding differs from an ordinary save
There are two different meanings of “convert JPEG to JXL.” In an ordinary conversion, software decodes the JPEG into image pixels and then encodes those pixels as a new JXL. If the JXL encode is lossy, another generation of compression loss is introduced. Even a lossless JXL encode preserves the decoded pixels, not necessarily the original JPEG bitstream and its exact reconstruction path.
JPEG XL also defines a lossless JPEG-transcoding workflow. That operation is designed so a compatible decoder can reconstruct the original JPEG. It is the only option that provides that specific reversibility guarantee. Look for an explicit JPEG-transcode or JPEG-reconstruction mode in the application; a generic “export as JXL” command should not be assumed to provide it.

Chrome for Developers announced in 2026 that Chrome ships JPEG XL decoding beginning with Chrome 155. The same announcement says JPEG XL offers “30-50% better compression than JPEG.” Treat that as the Chrome team’s general statement, not as a guaranteed saving for every image: results depend on source content, encoder settings, colour data and the comparison JPEG.
“We’re excited to announce that Chrome is shipping decoding support for the JPEG XL (.jxl) image format starting from Chrome 155.” — Chrome for Developers, 2026
Chrome for Developers also recommends evaluating AVIF and JPEG XL together. Its guidance describes JPEG XL as particularly useful for high-fidelity or lossless photographic images, rather than declaring one format the universal winner.

How to open a JXL file
- Check the extension. Confirm that the filename ends in
.jxl. Renaming a JPG or PNG to JXL does not convert it. - Try a current browser. Use a browser version listed as supporting JPEG XL. If the browser downloads the file or shows a blank page, that build may not have decoding enabled, or the server may be sending the wrong media type.
- Use a JXL-capable image application. The libjxl support catalog lists ImageMagick, libvips, FFmpeg, GIMP, Photoshop plugins, XnView, IrfanView and XL Converter among tools that can read, write, view or convert JXL.
- Update the application or plugin. Support can depend on the bundled libjxl version. Install a current release rather than assuming an old image viewer will gain support merely because the operating system is current.
- Inspect the result. If the file opens but looks different, check whether it contains HDR, a wide-gamut profile, transparency, multiple frames or a high bit depth that the viewer does not fully display.
Opening is not the same as editing. A viewer may decode a JXL while an editor can only export to another format, and a plugin may provide decoding without JXL encoding. Confirm both directions before choosing a workflow.

How to convert JXL to JPG
JXL-to-JPG conversion is a decode followed by a new JPEG encode. It is not a way to preserve every property of the source. JPEG cannot carry all combinations of HDR, wide gamut, alpha, animation or high-bit-depth data that JPEG XL can, so keep the original JXL whenever those properties matter.
- Choose a converter that can read JXL and write JPEG. ImageMagick, libvips, FFmpeg, GIMP, XnView, IrfanView and XL Converter are listed in the libjxl catalog, but the exact read/write capabilities vary by build.
- Open the JXL and inspect it. Check dimensions, colour profile, frame count, transparency and whether the application reports HDR or a high bit depth.
- Set the JPEG export options. Choose the quality level, colour handling and metadata policy offered by the application. A higher quality setting generally creates a larger JPEG; it does not restore properties that JPEG cannot represent.
- Export to a new filename. Do not overwrite the JXL until you have checked the JPEG in the applications and browsers that will receive it.
- Verify the output. Look for clipped highlights, changed colours, missing transparency, a flattened animation or unexpected metadata loss. Keep the JXL as the archival or feature-complete source.
Use PNG instead when you need a lossless raster export or transparency is important and the destination workflow accepts PNG. PNG conversion still decodes the JXL first, and it may not preserve HDR, wide-gamut signalling, animation or high bit depth exactly as stored in the source. Preserve the JXL alongside the PNG.
How to convert JPG to JXL without losing quality
First decide what “without losing quality” means. If you only need the decoded pixels to remain unchanged, decode the JPEG and use a lossless JXL encode. That avoids additional pixel loss after the JPEG has been decoded, but it does not promise that the original JPEG file can be reconstructed.

If you need reversibility to the original JPEG, use the application’s dedicated lossless JPEG-transcoding feature. A successful transcode stores the information needed for a compatible decoder to reconstruct that JPEG. A normal export, even one labelled lossless, is not a substitute for this mode.

- Preserve the source files. Work from copies and retain the original JPEG until reconstruction has been tested.
- Identify the operation in the tool. Select JPEG lossless transcode or JPEG reconstruction when available. If the interface only offers a quality slider or a generic JXL export, it is performing ordinary re-encoding.
- Choose metadata handling. Decide whether EXIF, orientation, colour profiles and other application metadata should be copied. Metadata policy is separate from image-pixel losslessness.
- Encode and test. Open the resulting JXL in another compatible tool. For a transcode, use the tool’s reconstruction command to produce a JPEG and compare it with the source according to the tool’s documented verification method.
- Keep a fallback. If another program cannot decode JXL, retain the JPEG or generate a web fallback rather than making the JXL the only copy.
Publishing JXL on a website
Send JXL files with the image/jxl media type and provide an alternative image format when browser coverage is uncertain. MDN specifically recommends an alternative because JPEG XL support is not universal across all browser versions.
A <picture> element lets the browser select the first format it understands:
<picture>
<source type='image/jxl' srcset='photo.jxl'>
<source type='image/avif' srcset='photo.avif'>
<source type='image/webp' srcset='photo.webp'>
<img src='photo.jpg' alt='Descriptive alternative text'>
</picture>
Place the JXL source first only when it is available at the requested dimensions and quality. Keep the JPEG, WebP or AVIF fallback generated from the same master so that unsupported browsers see the intended composition. Test the complete page in each browser version you claim to support; Safari’s full-download rendering can produce a different loading experience from a browser that progressively decodes the image.
Choosing a conversion or viewing tool
| Tool or component | Good fit | Check before relying on it |
|---|---|---|
| ImageMagick | Scriptable conversion and batch processing. | Confirm the installed build has JXL delegates for both reading and writing. |
| libvips | High-throughput image pipelines and server-side processing. | Verify the libvips version and linked JXL support; the catalog lists 8.11 and later. |
| FFmpeg | Automated media workflows or sequences that include image frames. | Check the build’s JPEG XL decoder and the output format options. |
| GIMP | Interactive editing before export. | Install a JXL-capable plugin or build and confirm whether it can encode as well as open. |
| Photoshop plugins | Workflows already centred on Photoshop. | Match the plugin to the application and operating-system version. |
| XnView or IrfanView | Desktop viewing, inspection and straightforward exports. | Confirm JXL support in the installed edition and whether batch export is available. |
| XL Converter | A focused graphical conversion utility. | Check its supported input, output and metadata features before a large batch. |
The catalog identifies software that can read, write, view or convert JXL; those verbs are not interchangeable. A viewer may not encode, and an encoder may not preserve animation, profiles or metadata. For a production pipeline, test a representative set of still, HDR, transparent and animated files before converting the entire library.

Common problems and fixes
The file has a .jxl extension but no application opens it
Install a current libjxl-based viewer or an application from the support catalog. Do not infer that the file is corrupt from an old viewer’s error message. If several current tools reject it, obtain a fresh copy and check that the extension was not added by renaming another format.
The browser downloads the image instead of displaying it
Use a browser version with JPEG XL decoding support and check that the server sends image/jxl. Keep a fallback source in a <picture> element for browsers without support.
The converted image has different colours or clipped highlights
The destination may not carry the JXL’s HDR, wide-gamut or profile information. Reopen the source, inspect its colour metadata, choose an output format and colour-management option suited to the destination, and retain the JXL for any workflow that needs the original range.
Transparency or animation disappeared
Many conversion targets and export dialogs create a single opaque frame. Confirm that the target format and selected options support the property. If they do not, keep the JXL and create a deliberately flattened derivative rather than treating the derivative as a replacement.
A JPG made from JXL is larger than expected
JPEG size depends on image content and encoder settings. Adjust the JPEG quality setting or choose another fallback format, but compare visual output at the actual display size. Repeatedly converting between formats will not recover data already discarded by an earlier lossy encode.
Quick Recap
Practical decision guide
- Need the smallest high-fidelity photographic master: evaluate JPEG XL alongside AVIF, using the same source and measured delivery conditions.
- Need exact recovery of an existing JPEG: use explicit JPEG lossless transcoding, not an ordinary export.
- Need a broadly consumable web asset: publish JXL with a tested AVIF, WebP or JPEG fallback.
- Need HDR, wide gamut, alpha, animation or high bit depth: keep the JXL as the source of truth and verify every derivative’s capabilities.
- Need a batch pipeline: use a tool such as ImageMagick or libvips, pin the versions, and test metadata and colour handling before production.
