PR teams are beginning to monitor which journalists and outlets AI systems cite when answering questions about companies. That is a real shift in communications work—but it does not mean every journalist has a universal, measurable “AI reputation score.” The evidence so far is about mapping sources that appear in AI-generated answers about organizations.
What “AI reputation” means for journalists
Imagine someone asks an AI assistant whether a company is reliable. The answer may synthesize material from news coverage, company pages, reviews, comparison sites, and other sources. Some communications-monitoring tools now let teams inspect those answers and identify journalists and outlets among the cited sources.
For PR, that creates a new question alongside familiar ones such as how much coverage a company receives: which sources appear to shape the explanations AI systems generate about it? What PR teams are starting to track
Whether a company appears, and how it is described
Monitoring can record whether a company appears in answers, how the answer characterizes it, and whether sentiment or visibility changes. Teams may also compare how competitors are presented. These measures describe generated answers; they are not, by themselves, proof of a company’s real-world reputation or of what caused a change.
Which sources AI answers cite
Source lists can include journalists and news outlets as well as company-owned pages and other external material. The practical value is seeing which sources recur in answers about a brand—not assuming that a citation means the AI endorses a source or that the source caused a recommendation.

How answers change over time and across systems
PRCA guidance recommends AI reputation audits, ongoing monitoring and reporting, and readiness for crises and misinformation in commissioned PR work. That makes monitoring an emerging communications workflow rather than a settled, standardized measure. (PRCA UK, 24 April 2026)

The LEOPRD findings are reported in Telum Media’s 28 September 2026 coverage; the FTI analysis is FTI Consulting’s 2025 AI Reputation Monitor. The Muck Rack figures are on its AI-era reputation page. They cannot be combined into a single benchmark: the populations, systems, dates, and visible methodological detail differ.
Why one answer or citation is not a reputation measure

LEOPRD’s repeated tests also show why a screenshot is weak evidence: recommendation outcomes were consistent throughout only in 40% of its repeated test groups, and source changes did not map neatly onto recommendation changes. Citation presence alone does not establish causation. A journalist appearing in an answer does not prove that their coverage made the AI recommend, reject, or describe a company in a particular way.
As LEOPRD founder Celia Harding put it, “Typing your company into ChatGPT and screenshotting the answer is not reputation monitoring.” A useful monitoring record needs repeated observations and enough context to tell what is being compared.

How to check AI answers about a company responsibly
- Choose the question and outcome. Decide whether you want to track company mentions, descriptions, sentiment, citations, visibility, or recommendation outcomes. These are different measures; do not use one as a substitute for another.
- Record the conditions. Log the AI system, exact prompt, date, geography, and language. Keep those details with each result so that a change is not mistaken for a trend when the test conditions changed.
- Repeat the test. Run the same prompt more than once and revisit it over time. Where the question matters, compare additional prompts and AI systems rather than treating one answer as representative.
- Inspect cited sources. Separate journalists and outlets from company-owned pages and other source types. Note which sources recur, but do not infer that citation alone proves influence or factual accuracy.
- Compare like with like. When reviewing competitors or changes, keep the platform, prompt, geography, language, and observation period consistent, or label the differences clearly.
- Review and respond with human judgment. Verify material claims against their underlying sources. If an answer appears inaccurate or signals a possible crisis, use established communications and fact-checking processes rather than treating an AI-generated response as a verdict.
What a useful monitoring approach should reveal
If a team is evaluating a tool or designing an internal process, the meaningful questions are whether it covers the AI systems and regions the organization cares about; supports repeat runs and historical records; exposes citations and journalist or outlet identities; distinguishes mentions, sentiment, visibility, and recommendations; and offers exports or human interpretation. The available material identifies these as useful comparison points, but does not establish an independent product ranking or validated pricing comparison.
The broader implication is that communications teams may need to look beyond press coverage alone. Company-owned information, editorial coverage, reviews, communities, and commercial comparison material can all form part of the information environment reflected in AI answers. That makes source mapping a potentially useful signal for PR, while leaving open the larger question of how much weight any particular source has in a generated response.
Is this already an “AI reputation” for every journalist?
Not on the evidence available. The phrase is best understood as shorthand for an emerging practice: tracking which journalists and outlets appear in AI-generated answers about organizations. The evidence does not show that PR firms routinely assign individual journalists a stable AI reputation score, or that such a score is standardized across platforms. The claim that there is a distinct personal reputation for every journalist remains an open question, not an established fact.
