Was your Social Security number exposed?

- Check any direct notice. Follow the contact and enrollment instructions in the letter. Verify contact details independently through the firm’s official website rather than relying on unexpected links or phone numbers in a message.
- Ask the firm for incident-specific details. Ask whether your information was involved, which data elements were affected, when the incident occurred, and whether the firm is offering monitoring or restoration support. The public index does not answer these questions.
- Consider a credit freeze. The FTC says freezes are free, do not affect your credit score, and can make it harder for someone to open a new credit account in your name. To place one, contact Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion separately. You can temporarily lift a freeze when a lender needs access to your credit report.
- Review your credit reports. Look for unfamiliar accounts and inquiries. A review may help you spot possible misuse, but it does not prevent new accounts from being opened.
- Act on signs of misuse. If you find unfamiliar activity or otherwise have evidence of identity theft, report it through IdentityTheft.gov and follow the FTC’s recovery guidance. Exposure alone does not mean identity theft has occurred.
Credit freeze, fraud alert, or report review?
These free or practical steps serve different purposes. A freeze restricts lender access to your report; a fraud alert asks businesses to take extra steps to verify your identity; reviewing reports helps you notice suspicious activity.
