The specific claim that Deere committed $18.5 million across the United States to strengthen the food system is not verified by the available primary-source record. John Deere Foundation did announce $19 million in grants on October 26, 2023, but that package was presented as global hunger and food-system support. Deere separately reported a $6.6 million, three-year unrestricted commitment to Feeding America in its 2024 Business Impact Report.
What John Deere actually announced
The documented 2023 announcement covered three grants from the John Deere Foundation: to World Food Program USA, One Acre Fund and The Nature Conservancy. Deere described them as the three largest grants in the foundation’s history at that point, linking them to hunger reduction, food access, support for farmers with limited resources and the resilience of food systems.
The announcement does not establish an $18.5 million total, nor does it describe the full package as a United States-only initiative. Treating those details as settled would change both the amount and the geographic scope of Deere’s published announcement.
The 2023 grant package
| Recipient | Amount or scope stated | What the announcement says |
|---|---|---|
| World Food Program USA | $5 million | The recipient said the grant would strengthen the capacity of the United Nations World Food Programme. |
| One Acre Fund | Amount not stated in the available announcement | The grant supports resource-constrained farmers in sub-Saharan Africa. |
| The Nature Conservancy | Amount not stated in the available announcement | The grant is part of the foundation’s broader food-system and hunger-relief work. |
| Total | $19 million | John Deere Foundation’s announced total for the three-grant series on October 26, 2023. |
What the grants are intended to do
World Food Program USA
World Food Program USA reported a $5 million grant intended to strengthen the World Food Programme’s capacity. The available material does not provide a results measurement or a completed-outcomes figure, so the grant should be described as funding capacity and operations rather than as proof that a specific number of people have already been reached.

One Acre Fund
One Acre Fund Managing Director Matthew Forti said the grant would enable the organization to support more than 750,000 farm families across sub-Saharan Africa over five years and unlock nearly $65 million in new farmer profits and assets through higher food-crop, cash-crop and agroforestry productivity.
Those numbers are a prospective estimate attributed to Forti in the recipient announcement. They are not an independently verified result and should not be written as benefits already delivered.

Deere’s separate Feeding America commitment
Deere’s 2024 Business Impact Report documents a different initiative: a $6.6 million unrestricted commitment over three years to Feeding America. Because it is unrestricted, the commitment is not presented as a grant tied to one narrowly defined project in the available report.

The same report says Farmlink is working with Feeding America to supply rescued food through the Feeding America network. That describes a food-rescue and distribution relationship; it is separate from the foundation’s 2023, $19 million grant package and should not be added to it without a stated accounting basis.
How this fits Deere’s wider food and nutrition work
Deere’s community information describes work involving farmers, food banks, local food-bank partnerships and the Global FoodBanking Network. The page also displays hunger and food-waste figures, but the available text does not provide publication years for those statistics. They therefore should not be presented as dated measurements without checking the underlying sources.

Why the $18.5 million figure matters
A difference of $500,000 is material in a charitable-commitment headline, and so is the difference between “across the United States” and a program that includes sub-Saharan Africa and global food-system organizations. The available record does not identify a primary source confirming both parts of the $18.5 million claim.

The most accurate account is therefore to report the verified figures separately: $19 million in foundation grants announced in 2023 and $6.6 million committed to Feeding America over three years, as reported in 2024. Neither figure should be relabeled as an $18.5 million U.S.-wide commitment.
