Short answer: An “AI-exposed” job is not automatically a job that will disappear. It means artificial intelligence could perform some tasks more efficiently. Whether workers lose jobs depends on how employers reorganize work, whether an occupation is projected to shrink, and whether affected workers can move into expanding, adequately paid roles.
Jennie Brand, a UCLA sociology professor, argues that exposure by itself is too weak a test of vulnerability. The International Labour Organization (ILO) likewise reported in 2025 that one in four workers worldwide are in occupations with some degree of generative-AI exposure, while concluding that most jobs are more likely to be transformed than made redundant.
What does “AI-exposed job” mean?
Brand defines an AI-exposed job as one whose tasks could potentially be performed more efficiently with AI. In research with Xi Song, a task counted as exposed when large language models or related software could reduce the time needed by at least half while maintaining quality.

A system may draft text, classify documents or calculate figures while a person remains responsible for judgment, exceptions, compliance, customer interaction and accountability.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) separates theoretical exposure—what AI might assist with or complete—from observed evidence of what tools such as Claude or Copilot have actually been used to do. Its methodology warns that exposure alone does not establish job loss, productivity gains or wage effects.
Will AI take my job?
No single exposure score can answer that question. An occupation can shrink, grow or change substantially after AI is introduced. The more useful test combines several conditions:
- Task exposure: how much of the job consists of activities AI can perform or accelerate.
- Substitution versus complementarity: whether AI replaces core work or helps a worker perform higher-value work.
- Occupational outlook: whether employment is projected to grow or decline.
- Workforce adaptation: whether workers and employers are acquiring relevant AI skills and training.
- Mobility: whether realistic routes exist into growing occupations without a damaging pay cut.
Brand calls the most concerning combination high exposure, projected occupational decline and limited mobility into growing work. Repeatedly moving from one shrinking occupation into another, or accepting lower-paid work after displacement, creates what she calls a “mobility trap.”

Which jobs appear most exposed?
The UCLA interview identifies occupations built around information processing, documentation and language-heavy routines. Examples include:
- Payroll clerks
- Insurance claims and policy-processing clerks
- Bookkeeping clerks
- Medical transcriptionists
- Data-entry workers
- Interpreters and translators
These roles often contain tasks that software can standardize, summarize or generate. But exposure does not prove that employers will eliminate the occupation. In the LinkedIn data used by Brand’s team, fewer than 1% of payroll and bookkeeping clerks listed a generative-AI skill, suggesting that worker access and training may matter as much as the underlying task technology.
What current employment evidence shows
Available evidence points to mixed outcomes rather than a universal wave of AI layoffs.

Global modeled exposure
The ILO’s 2025 update estimates that one in four workers worldwide are in an occupation with some degree of generative-AI exposure. This is an exposure estimate, not a tally of people made redundant. The ILO’s conclusion is that transformation is more likely than full replacement because human input remains necessary in most occupations.
U.S. occupational projections
BLS projections for 2023–2033 show growth in several occupations that are also susceptible to AI impacts. The figures are forecasts shaped by many economic and demographic factors; they do not attribute each change solely to AI.
| Occupation or group | BLS projected change, 2023–2033 | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| Software developers | +17.9% | AI may assist coding, testing and documentation while demand for software continues to grow. |
| Personal financial advisers | +17.1% | Some analytical tasks may be automated, but advising and client responsibility remain important. |
| Computer occupations | +11.7% | A broad category with different exposure and complementarity patterns. |
| Credit analysts | −3.9% | Decline is projected, but the forecast is not an AI-only causal estimate. |
| Claims adjusters, examiners and investigators | −4.4% | Routine review may be more automatable, alongside continued human case handling. |
| Insurance appraisers | −9.2% | The steepest decline listed here; exposure still does not specify how many jobs AI will remove. |
Observed Canadian trends
A Statistics Canada study published in 2026 found that employment generally grew across AI-exposure and complementarity groups from November 2022 through December 2025. Growth was weaker for younger and less-educated workers. The study cautioned that technology-driven job losses are difficult to measure directly and that exposure to AI does not necessarily imply a risk of job loss.

Who is exposed by wage level?
A 2024 Bank for International Settlements simulation of 711 U.S. occupations found that, at high AI capabilities, up to 45% of skills in the highest wage quartile were exposed, compared with 26% in the lowest wage quartile. The authors found that exposed low-wage core skills were more substitutable, while AI more often complemented high-wage workers’ side skills. A high exposure share therefore does not automatically mean high-paid workers face the greatest displacement risk.
How can you judge your own occupation?
Use a task-level assessment rather than a “safe” or “unsafe” label:
Recommended Free Tools
- List your recurring tasks. Separate drafting, searching, classification, data entry and routine analysis from judgment, negotiation, physical work, relationship management and accountability.
- Identify feasible AI assistance. Ask whether current tools can complete each task at acceptable quality, not merely produce a plausible first draft.
- Check the occupation’s outlook. Look for a current national labor projection and note its geography, period and assumptions.
- Look for complementarity. Determine whether AI frees time for higher-value responsibilities or removes the central reason the role exists.
- Audit mobility options. Compare adjacent occupations, required credentials, likely pay and employer-funded training. A move that leads to another declining field is not a durable solution.
How can workers prepare if AI changes their work?
The evidence supports practical preparation rather than panic:

- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- Build task-specific AI literacy. Learn the tools that apply to your actual workflow, including verification, privacy and error checking.
- Document complementary skills. Keep concrete examples of judgment, domain knowledge, communication, oversight and problem-solving that AI does not independently provide.
- Seek paid training. Ask employers about structured instruction, redeployment pathways and time to practice; access to training is a major part of whether exposure becomes opportunity.
- Target growing occupations. Compare several routes instead of assuming the nearest job is the safest. Consider credentials, geographic access, pay and projected demand together.
- Monitor changes at work. New software, altered performance metrics, hiring freezes and redesigned workflows can reveal how exposure is becoming actual organizational change.
Brand’s interview notes that time, money, training and access to alternatives shape vulnerability, while the mechanisms were not all directly tested in that study. The ILO therefore calls for managed transitions rather than treating automation as an individual worker’s responsibility alone.
What the evidence cannot yet tell us
The cited studies do not provide a single causal total of people already laid off specifically because of AI. ILO and BIS figures are modeled exposure measures; BLS numbers are occupational forecasts; Statistics Canada reports observed employment patterns but cannot isolate every technology-driven change. Treating any one of these as a precise AI-layoff count overstates what the evidence establishes.
