Adarsh Kushwah says he turned to Jiro after search costs, freshness limits, and scraping reliability became friction points in his AI-agent projects. Jiro gives developers a self-hosted search and scraping layer, but it is not a no-operations shortcut or a proven replacement for every search API. The choice depends on which sources and tools you need, where you want requests processed, and whether you can run and maintain the service.

Why I started looking beyond paid search APIs

In his October 2026 account, Jiro’s author, Adarsh Kushwah, describes running into three practical problems while building AI-agent projects: the cost of search services, limits on freshness, and unreliable scraping. His move to Jiro is a personal account of addressing those frustrations, not an independent benchmark showing that Jiro is cheaper, fresher, or more reliable for every workload.

That distinction matters. A self-hosted layer can change how a project accesses search and scraping, but it does not automatically remove operating costs or make every target site accessible. The useful question is whether Jiro’s deployment model and documented integrations fit your requirements better than a managed service.

What Jiro provides

The Jiro project repository describes it as an open-source, self-hosted search API and web-scraping platform. Its maintainers say it aggregates nine search engines and twelve social platforms and offers hybrid ranking, AI-powered search features, and an MCP server. Those are project descriptions, not independently verified performance or availability findings. See the Jiro project repository.

  1. Install the package with pip install jirosearch.
  2. Start the local service with jiro serve.
  3. Send requests to the local HTTP search endpoint described in the project documentation.

The documentation also describes Docker Compose and Kubernetes Helm deployment routes. The right option depends on how you already deploy services: a local package may suit experimentation, while container or cluster deployment brings Jiro into an existing infrastructure workflow. The repository also documents Python, JavaScript/TypeScript, and Go SDKs; these are documented interfaces, not independently exercised here.

Connect an MCP client

For compatible MCP clients, the repository documents a configuration that launches jiro mcp. It lists 16 tools across free and Pro tiers. The documented free group includes basic search, scraping, classification, engine comparison, and status tools; the Pro group includes AI search, hybrid search, structured search, and social tools. Since tier access can change, confirm the current feature list before building around a specific tool.

Self-hosted or managed: choose by workload and responsibility

The repository lists both self-hosted and managed-cloud plans. Its figures below were checked on October 7, 2026; they are mutable vendor-published prices and quotas, not independently audited comparisons. Confirm current terms and limits on the project repository before making a deployment decision.

Plan listed by Jiro Price listed Request limits listed
Self-hosted Free Free 100 requests per minute; 10,000 per day
Self-hosted Pro ₹4,999 one-time 500 requests per minute; 100,000 per day
Managed cloud Pro ₹999 per month 25,000 credits; 120 requests per minute

The repository describes the cloud allowance in credits, not as a directly comparable number of requests. Do not treat credits and request quotas as interchangeable: check how the service charges the operations your application will make.

When self-hosting makes sense

  • You need control over where the service runs or how it fits into your own infrastructure.
  • Your expected request volume falls within the listed limits, or you are prepared to scale the deployment if it does not.
  • You can maintain the application, monitor it, and respond to changes in upstream websites or integrations.

When managed service may be the better fit

  • You want less infrastructure work and prefer not to operate another service.
  • You need a managed deployment and its current features, credit rules, and request limits meet your requirements.

As Kushwah’s account acknowledges, sufficiently heavy self-hosted use may require horizontal scaling. Self-hosting changes who operates the infrastructure; it does not make that work disappear.

Anker USB C Hub, 5-in-1 USBC to HDMI Splitter with 4K Display
  • 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
  • Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
  • Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
  • HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
  • Sources: Does the current version support the search engines and social platforms your application actually needs?
  • Capacity: Do the current rate and daily limits cover your expected traffic, including bursts and retries?
  • Tools and tier: Are the MCP tools or search modes you need available on your selected plan?
  • Data handling: Where will requests and results be processed, and does that match your project’s requirements?
  • Operations: Who will handle deployment, updates, monitoring, failures, and scaling?
  • Target-site constraints: Is your intended collection permitted by the target site’s terms and applicable rules? A self-hosted scraper does not establish permission or guarantee that anti-bot measures can be bypassed consistently.

What the comparison can—and cannot—establish

Kushwah’s article discusses services including SerpAPI, ScraperAPI, and Bright Data, and says he considered Tavily, Exa, and Brave Search. Those names describe his decision context; they do not establish current competitor prices, quotas, or performance. The Jiro repository also includes its own comparisons, but the material reviewed does not independently verify those claims.

No independent performance benchmarks or reliability tests are established in the cited material. Treat the author’s experience as one developer’s rationale, and compare current official terms for the services you are actually considering rather than relying on an unverified cost or performance ranking.
