Jira and Linear both track issues and projects, but neither is the better choice for every team. Jira is worth considering when your process depends on configurable workflows, broader planning, or administration that varies by plan. Linear may suit teams looking for its issue, project, cycle, and initiative workflow, and it offers a documented route for importing or temporarily syncing Jira work. Compare the capabilities your team actually needs, the plan that includes them, and the effort of moving your existing work.

These are different products, not interchangeable labels for the same workflow. Compare the work your team needs to do and the plan that includes it rather than choosing by brand or headline price.
How to decide which fits your team
Choose based on workflow and planning needs
Atlassian’s Jira plan guide describes core capabilities such as boards, backlogs, multiple views, integrations, and plan-dependent options for automation, advanced planning, support, and administration. If your team relies on a particular configuration or planning capability, verify that it is included in the Jira tier you would buy.

Check integrations and administration requirements
List the integrations and administrative requirements that are essential rather than assuming the products offer equivalent coverage. Jira’s tiers differ in scale, automation, storage, advanced planning, support, and administration. Linear lists SAML/SCIM, granular admin controls, migration and onboarding support, priority support, and account management among Enterprise features. Confirm current availability and plan requirements directly with each vendor.
Compare the cost for your actual setup
The pricing pages accessed for this comparison displayed Jira Standard at $7.91 and Premium at $14.54 per user per month; Atlassian notes a calculator and billing-cycle differences. Its Free plan is listed for up to 10 users. Linear displayed Basic at $10 and Business at $16 per user per month with yearly billing; Enterprise is custom-priced and annual. These are page snapshots, not guaranteed current quotes. Check the live pages for current currency, geography, billing cadence, and terms before budgeting.

- Designer Gold Fibre Series Planner Notebook. 84 Pages.
- INCLUDES 3 NOTEBOOKS: Each pack includes 3 notebooks that can be any combination of the three colors we offer: Navy, Gray, or Maroon; Your order may include 3 of the same color
Do not infer that one product is cheaper from those figures alone. Seat count, required tier, billing cadence, add-ons, geography, and negotiated Enterprise terms all affect total cost. Linear’s billing documentation says workspace billing counts unsuspended users and describes monthly or yearly billing, with Enterprise yearly only. Compare the same number of users and the same billing period, then include the features the team actually requires.

What changes when moving from Jira to Linear
One-time import: move historical work
Linear’s Jira import guide describes a one-time transfer of projects, issues, and metadata. It supports historical data such as issue relationships, epics mapped as Linear projects, and sprints mapped as cycles. This is an import, not an ongoing connection: changes made in Jira afterward do not automatically stay synchronized through the import.

Some Jira structures need attention rather than a direct transfer. Linear says Jira project boards are not imported and must be recreated. Before importing, prepare team mappings, user provisioning, workflow statuses, and labels. Review custom fields, issue types, required fields, relationships, and board or view configurations against the destination setup.
Jira sync: keep systems connected during a transition
Linear’s Jira integration documentation describes Jira Sync as a way to connect Jira spaces and Linear teams during a pilot or transition. Depending on configuration, creation can be unidirectional or bidirectional. Sync is useful when teams need continued visibility while work is split across systems, but its mappings and constraints differ from the one-time import.

For example, a Jira required field can prevent an issue from being created in Linear, and some Jira concepts do not map directly. Do not assume that a successful connection means every field or workflow is represented identically in both tools.

- Choose the transition model. Decide whether you need a clean cutover, a one-time historical import, a period of coexistence with sync, or a fresh start. Linear’s migration guide provides additional transition guidance.
- Audit the Jira setup. Identify custom fields, issue types, required fields, labels, statuses, relationships, and boards or views that teams depend on.
- Prepare Linear first. Map Jira projects to Linear teams, provision users, configure statuses, and clean up labels before importing.
- Run a representative pilot. Try a small but realistic sample that includes the kinds of work and fields your teams use. This is a practical safeguard against documented mapping differences, not a vendor guarantee.
- Validate before cutover. Check imported records, relationships, status mappings, and recreated boards with the people who use them. If you use sync, test the directions and fields that matter to your transition.
Which should you pick?
- Lean toward Jira if your team’s workflows, planning, integrations, or administration depend on Jira capabilities that fit your requirements and budget.
- Lean toward Linear if its issue-and-project organization matches the way your teams want to work, its plan limits and controls are sufficient, and you are prepared to address migration differences.
- Keep the decision open if the deciding factor is total cost, a specific integration, or an important Jira configuration. Verify that requirement on the relevant live plan or migration documentation before committing.
The comparison is ultimately about fit: required features, team structure, cost at the needed tier, and the amount of transition work—not a universal winner.
