Reliance Industries shares rose 2.8% to ₹1,207 in late-morning trading on 15 October 2026 after Jio Platforms announced a ₹30,213-crore initial public offering (IPO). Investors reacted to a firm timetable and price band, the prospect of a transparent market value for Reliance’s digital and telecom business, and a plan to use most net proceeds to reduce Jio’s borrowings.
What triggered the 15 October rise?
Jio Platforms announced that its IPO will offer 27 crore newly issued shares at ₹1,065–₹1,119 each. Subscription is scheduled for 21–23 October 2026, with listing expected on 28 October. At the upper price band, the offer implies a Jio Platforms valuation of about ₹10.3 lakh crore (approximately $108 billion).
The issue is entirely fresh equity: existing shareholders are not selling shares through an offer for sale. Up to ₹27,500 crore of net proceeds is intended to repay borrowings of Reliance Jio Infocomm. That combination gave investors two concrete reasons to reassess Reliance Industries (RIL): a possible standalone valuation for Jio and a potentially stronger balance sheet for the telecom operation.
Moneycontrol reported the 2.8% move to ₹1,207 in late-morning trade. The announced issue would be India’s largest IPO by proceeds, exceeding Hyundai Motor India’s ₹27,859-crore offering in 2024.

Why investors viewed the announcement positively
A visible market price for Jio
RIL owns about 66.4% of Jio Platforms. Before a listing, investors had to estimate Jio’s value inside a conglomerate that also includes retail, energy, oil-to-chemicals (O2C), artificial intelligence and new-energy businesses. A separately traded Jio share could provide an observable valuation for the digital and telecom assets. Religare Broking said that independent price discovery could narrow RIL’s holding-company discount and assigned a ₹1,696 target for RIL. That target is a brokerage opinion, not a guaranteed price.
Possible interest savings and cash-flow improvement
Moneycontrol reported that repaying up to ₹27,500 crore of Reliance Jio Infocomm debt could reduce interest expense. Lower financing costs could improve margins and allow more of the telecom business’s operating cash flow to become free cash flow. The effect will depend on the debt actually repaid and the borrowing costs that disappear; the announcement does not establish a guaranteed earnings increase.

A clearer way to judge the conglomerate discount
Motilal Oswal estimated that RIL’s market price reflected an 18%–36% discount to the value of its Jio stake, depending on the multiple assigned to Reliance Retail Ventures. A listed Jio would give investors a daily reference price for one major holding, making that discount easier to calculate. It would not automatically eliminate the discount, because RIL would still own several businesses and investors could apply different valuations to each of them.
Expectations for growth
Coverage of RIL’s annual general meeting linked the company’s outlook to Jio tariffs and market share, 5G, home broadband, enterprise services, artificial intelligence, retail and new-energy projects. Business Standard reported that Mukesh Ambani targeted more than doubling consolidated EBITDA over five years, while analysts expected digital operations to contribute about 80% of incremental EBITDA. These are management and brokerage expectations, not settled results.
How the October announcement differs from the June draft filing
The market had already reacted to the possibility of a Jio listing. Upstox reported that RIL shares rose as much as 2.70% on 22 June 2026 after Jio Platforms filed draft IPO papers with SEBI. The draft contemplated the same 27 crore shares but was then expected to raise around ₹37,700 crore, a figure different from the ₹30,213-crore issue announced in October.
Business Standard’s 22 June AGM report said RIL climbed as much as 3% to ₹1,345.45 and identified the draft filing, the five-year EBITDA ambition and broker expectations for Jio as event-driven catalysts. At that AGM, Ambani said: “The proposed listing of Jio will demonstrate to the world that India can build technology companies of global scale, global capability, and global value.”

Will the IPO unlock value for Reliance shareholders?
It could, but the 15 October share move is not proof that value has already been unlocked. The outcome depends on the price investors ultimately pay for Jio Platforms, the company’s earnings and cash generation, the amount of debt repaid, and how the market values RIL’s remaining businesses. An expensive Jio IPO could limit any benefit to RIL even if the listing is successful; a strong valuation combined with lower interest costs could support a higher value for RIL’s 66.4% stake.
RIL shareholders also need to distinguish the two exposures. Owning Jio Platforms after listing would concentrate an investor in the digital and telecom business. Owning RIL remains a diversified position spanning Jio, retail, energy, O2C, AI and new-energy investments. The IPO does not turn RIL into a pure-play telecom or technology company.
Quick Recap
Best Value
What to examine before deciding whether to subscribe
- Valuation: Compare the ₹1,065–₹1,119 price band and implied ₹10.3-lakh-crore upper-band valuation with Jio’s earnings, cash flow and growth rate.
- Debt reduction: Check how much of the planned ₹27,500 crore repayment occurs and what interest expense it removes.
- Operating assumptions: Assess the durability of tariffs, average revenue per user, 5G investment, home broadband and enterprise growth.
- Portfolio trade-off: Decide whether direct Jio exposure fits better than RIL’s diversified mix of businesses.
