Is Jetstar worth it? It can be, if the fare suits your route and schedule and you can travel with the baggage and flexibility included in your booking. The advertised base fare is not the whole trip price when you need checked baggage, an overhead carry-on, a selected seat, food, or the option to change plans. Compare complete itineraries, not headline fares.
Is Jetstar really cheaper after baggage and other extras?
There is no single answer across routes and dates. Compare the Jetstar fare with the alternatives for the same journey, adding only the extras you actually need: baggage, seats, meals, and flexibility. Also compare departure times, airports, connections, and the options available if your flight is disrupted.
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) describes Jetstar’s announced baggage change as further unbundling. ABC News likewise reports that the total cost depends on the traveller: someone with only a small personal item may pay less, while someone who needs a wheeled cabin case may pay more once the add-on is included. These are analyses of the change, not measured results after it takes effect. ACCC report · ABC News analysis
ABC News quotes aviation consultant Justin Wastnage saying that a full-service airline can sometimes be cheaper for travellers with baggage, guaranteed seats, and onward connections. That is a general observation, not a price comparison for your route. The practical test is to price the complete itinerary you would actually book.

The guide says inclusions can vary with flight duration, aircraft, origin, and destination. Check the fare conditions attached to your own booking, especially if you booked through another seller.

What changes on 2 February 2027?
From 2 February 2027, Jetstar’s announced basic-fare allowance is one small underseat bag, up to 40 x 30 x 20 cm. A second item or a larger bag that needs overhead-bin space requires paid Priority Carry-on. The ACCC’s September 2026 report gives an announced one-way price range of $25–$52, varying by flight, and says the add-on includes priority boarding. This is a stated future range, not a universal current fee; check the price and conditions for your itinerary before booking.

Jetstar says the change is intended to ease boarding and improve on-time departures by reducing gate bag weighing and competition for overhead space. Whether the policy lowers or raises your total depends on what you carry. If you are considering a personal-item backpack, measure its full external dimensions, including bulging pockets, and check the allowance displayed for your travel date. You do not need a new bag if one you already own fits.
How does the onboard experience vary?
Jetstar’s short-haul A320-family service and long-haul 787 service are different products. Airline Ratings describes the short-haul cabin as stripped back and reports seatback entertainment and in-seat power on 787s. Those amenities should not be assumed for every flight: aircraft assignments can differ, so check the aircraft and service information for the specific itinerary. Airline Ratings product description

What do reliability and customer reviews tell you?
Jetstar’s December 2025 release cited Federal Government figures stating that 76.1% of its domestic flights arrived on time and 2.6% were cancelled in February 2025; the release said the figures covered more than 6,600 flights to more than 20 domestic destinations. These are historical figures published by the airline, not a current performance ranking. The ACCC’s September 2026 report says its service analysis uses BITRE data through July 2026. How to decide whether Jetstar suits your trip
- Price the full journey. Add the baggage, seat, food, and flexibility you actually require to the fare, then compare like-for-like options on the same route and date.
- Check baggage rules for your travel date. Confirm the included allowance, dimensions, and any add-on price in your booking rather than relying on a general fare description.
- Read the change conditions. Note the applicable deadline, possible fare difference, and cancellation terms before choosing a fare.
- Assess the itinerary, not just the aircraft. Compare departure time, airport, flight length, connections, and the consequences of a delay for onward travel.
- Verify the flight-specific cabin details. If power or entertainment matters, check the aircraft and service information for that flight instead of assuming all Jetstar aircraft offer the same features.
What to do if a Jetstar flight is delayed or cancelled
Jetstar directs affected passengers to Manage Booking to review available options. Its contact page also explains a process for claims for additional expenses. The options and any reimbursement or compensation depend on the route, circumstances, applicable law, and current terms, so check the instructions relevant to your booking rather than assuming a particular outcome. If you are considering travel insurance, inspect whether your policy covers eligible additional expenses and what evidence or conditions it requires. Jetstar contact and claims information
