Jetpack is a WordPress plugin and connected service suite for security, performance, publishing, statistics, and site management. The plugin has a free tier, but individual modules, usage allowances, backup storage, and advanced analytics vary by product and plan. The right choice depends on the specific protection, speed, traffic-reporting, or growth feature your site needs.

What is Jetpack?

Jetpack combines WordPress tools that are delivered through the core plugin with connected services and separate products. Jetpack describes itself as a way to create content, grow subscribers, earn money, and keep a site safe, fast, and secure. In practical terms, it adds a control layer for common site-owner tasks rather than being a single security or caching feature.

The core plugin’s feature guide groups its tools into security, growth, performance, and support. Some capabilities run in the free plugin, while others require a paid bundle or a standalone product such as Jetpack Boost for optimization or Jetpack Protect for scanning and firewall functions. The exact entitlement belongs to the plan shown on the current Jetpack pricing page, not simply to the fact that the plugin is installed.

Is Jetpack free?

Yes. Jetpack offers a free option with selected features, including account and brute-force protection, downtime monitoring, notifications, basic Stats reporting, social sharing, forms, newsletters, related posts, SEO tools, sitemaps, and other site utilities. Installing the free plugin does not automatically provide every paid service.

Paid plans add combinations of real-time backups, malware scanning, automatic firewall rules, larger backup archives, advanced statistics, search and video allowances, spam protection, and additional support. A separate paid product may also be more appropriate than a bundle when you need only one function. Check the live feature comparison before purchasing because limits and promotional offers change.

What does Jetpack do?

Security and availability

  • Brute-force and account protection: helps reduce automated login abuse and adds account-related safeguards.
  • Downtime monitoring: sends notifications when Jetpack detects an availability problem.
  • Firewall and scanning: paid security offerings can add firewall rules and malware scans. Jetpack Protect is the standalone security option listed for these functions.
  • Backups: Security and Complete bundles include real-time backups, with different archive capacities.

Scanning is preventive monitoring, not a guaranteed cleanup service. Jetpack’s pricing FAQ says Scan is not designed to fully clean a site that was already infected before activation. If an existing compromise is suspected, preserve evidence and use a qualified incident-response or malware-removal service rather than assuming that turning on Scan will repair the installation.

Publishing, audience, and growth tools

  • Social sharing tools can distribute new posts to connected networks.
  • Forms and newsletters support visitor communication and subscriptions.
  • Related-posts and SEO features help visitors discover additional content.
  • Jetpack Search, VideoPress, AI requests, and other growth services have plan-specific limits.

These tools are delivered as WordPress features, but their commercial allowances differ. For a site that publishes heavily or serves video, compare the current Search, VideoPress, AI, and spam limits rather than assuming the free plugin includes unlimited use.

Performance optimization

Jetpack Boost is the performance-focused product. The current comparison lists image delivery through a CDN and lazy loading across Free, Security, Growth, and Complete. Critical CSS is shown as a manual option in Free, Security, and Growth, and as an automated option in Complete. Performance history is listed only in Complete.

Those are optimization capabilities, not a promise of a particular Lighthouse score, Core Web Vitals result, ranking position, or load time. Images, themes, hosting, JavaScript, advertising, and other plugins affect the result. Measure your own site before enabling a change and again afterward.

How do Jetpack plans differ?

The following figures are the specifications displayed in Jetpack’s live comparison when checked on 13 October 2026. The page showed New Zealand-dollar pricing and a first-year introductory discount, so both prices and entitlements should be rechecked for your country before checkout.

Plan Published capabilities and allowances
Free Selected core security, growth, publishing, Stats, and site tools; image CDN and lazy loading; manual Critical CSS.
Security Real-time backup with 10 GB of displayed storage; malware scanning; 10,000 monthly Akismet API calls; image CDN and lazy loading; manual Critical CSS.
Growth Growth-focused tools with 10,000 commercial Stats views per month; image CDN and lazy loading; manual Critical CSS.
Complete Real-time backup with 1 TB of displayed storage; malware scanning; 100,000 commercial Stats views per month; 60,000 monthly Akismet API calls; image CDN and lazy loading; automated Critical CSS; performance history.

The comparison also changes activity-log retention, Search limits, VideoPress capacity, spam allowances, AI usage, Boost functions, and support between tiers. Those limits are plan specifications rather than permanent product guarantees, so use the linked comparison for the exact value at the time you subscribe.

Jetpack’s pricing page also states that more than 3 million WordPress sites use Jetpack. The page does not provide a reporting year, measurement method, or independent verification for that figure; treat it as the provider’s own published statement, not as a dated market statistic.

What is included in Jetpack Security?

Jetpack Security is the bundle to examine when your priority is protection and recoverability rather than growth features. On the displayed comparison, Security includes real-time backups, 10 GB of backup storage, malware scanning, and 10,000 monthly Akismet API calls. Complete includes the same broad security categories with 1 TB of backup storage and 60,000 monthly Akismet API calls.

Real-time backup is valuable for stores, membership sites, and frequently updated publishers because the recovery point can be closer to the latest change than a once-daily schedule. Storage matters when a site has a large media library or needs a longer archive. Confirm retention rules, restore workflow, and the number of sites covered by the license before relying on a plan as your only disaster-recovery system.

Firewall and scanning features can reduce exposure, but they do not replace updates, strong administrator passwords, least-privilege accounts, off-site recovery planning, or a tested restore. If the site was compromised before scanning was activated, use a specialist cleanup process.

Is Jetpack Stats free?

Jetpack Stats has a free mode with full history and standard traffic reports. The free guide lists views and visitors, top posts and pages, referrers, clicks, search terms, authors, downloads, video plays, insights, subscribers, and country-level locations.

Paid Stats adds UTM campaign reporting, device breakdowns, and more detailed location data such as region and city. Paid access is priced according to monthly traffic rather than one universal flat amount. Growth and Complete include commercial Stats allowances of 10,000 and 100,000 views per month respectively on the comparison checked on 13 October 2026.

What Jetpack Stats counts and excludes

Jetpack’s Stats FAQ documents several exclusions from default reporting:

  • Visits by the site owner while logged in as an administrator are excluded.
  • Browsers that do not run JavaScript or load images are not counted.
  • Search-engine crawlers are excluded.
  • Logged-in registered members are excluded.

Consequently, Stats is not a promise that every request in a server log will appear as a visitor or page view. You can use Jetpack Stats alongside a service such as Google Analytics when you need another measurement method, campaign model, or reporting workflow. Interpret differences by comparing each tool’s counting rules instead of treating one number as universally correct.

Does Jetpack slow down WordPress?

There is no independent published study in the available official guidance that quantifies a universal speed impact. Jetpack provides optimization functions, but the effect depends on which modules are enabled and on the rest of your stack. Image delivery and lazy loading may reduce transfer work, while additional scripts, requests, or integrations can affect a particular installation.

Evaluate performance as a controlled change:

  1. Record representative page-load and Core Web Vitals measurements for your own site.
  2. Enable only the Jetpack or Boost feature you intend to evaluate.
  3. Test the same templates, devices, and geographic test locations again.
  4. Check functionality, image quality, forms, checkout, and logged-in pages before keeping the change.
  5. Disable the module if it creates a regression; Jetpack’s setup guidance allows individual features to be switched off.

A high score in a lab tool is not guaranteed by selecting a Jetpack plan, and no plan should be purchased solely on the assumption that it will improve search rankings.

How do you install and connect Jetpack?

  1. In the WordPress dashboard, open Plugins > Add New Plugin.
  2. Search for Jetpack, install the official plugin, and select Activate.
  3. Choose the connection option when prompted and sign in to, or create, a free WordPress.com account.
  4. Review the available plans and select the free option or the paid product that matches your required feature.
  5. Open Jetpack’s settings and turn individual modules on or off. Do not enable overlapping functions from multiple plugins without checking for conflicts.
  6. After activation, verify backups, notifications, Stats tracking, forms, and any security alerts on a staging copy or during a low-risk maintenance window.

Jetpack’s getting-started guidance says the site should run the latest WordPress version, be publicly accessible, and have XML-RPC enabled. A private local installation or a host that blocks the required connection may not complete setup until those conditions are met.

How much does Jetpack cost?

Jetpack pricing is regional, promotional, and dependent on billing cadence. On 13 October 2026, the official page displayed New Zealand-dollar prices, a first-year introductory discount, and annual billing for the shown bundles. That snapshot is not a universal or permanent price. Before paying, set your country on the pricing page and check the renewal amount, included sites, feature limits, currency, taxes, and whether the offer applies only to the first year.

The displayed refund policy says yearly paid plans have a 14-day money-back period; the pricing FAQ states refunds within 14 days for yearly plans and within 7 days for monthly plans. Confirm the current terms at checkout because policy wording and eligibility can change.

Stats pricing is traffic-based. Avoid comparing an old per-tier amount with a current bundle allowance; use the live Stats free-or-paid guide and pricing table together.

Which Jetpack option should you choose?

Choose the free option when

  • You need basic site tools, notifications, sharing, forms, newsletters, or standard traffic reports.
  • You can maintain separate, tested backup and security processes.
  • You do not need paid Stats segmentation, real-time backup, malware scanning, or larger commercial allowances.

Consider Security when

  • Real-time recovery and malware scanning are more important than advanced growth tools.
  • A 10 GB backup archive is sufficient for the site’s files and database history.
  • The site’s traffic and spam volume fit the displayed Security allowances.

Consider Growth when

  • Audience, search, newsletters, and commercial Stats reporting are the main priorities.
  • The 10,000-view monthly Stats allowance is adequate.
  • You already have a separate backup and malware-response arrangement.

Consider Complete when

  • You want the largest displayed backup archive, at 1 TB, alongside scanning and real-time backup.
  • You need up to 100,000 commercial Stats views per month.
  • Automated Critical CSS and performance history justify the higher bundle price.
  • You need the higher displayed Akismet allowance of 60,000 monthly API calls.

For multiple client installations, Jetpack’s pricing page describes an Automattic for Agencies licensing platform with volume discounts and referral revenue on plans sold. That path is intended for agencies and freelancers managing several sites; an individual site owner should compare normal per-site plans first.

Common limitations and troubleshooting checks

  • Connection fails: update WordPress, confirm the site is publicly reachable, and verify that XML-RPC is not blocked by the host or a security rule.
  • Stats are lower than server logs: review the documented exclusions for administrators, non-JavaScript browsers, crawlers, and logged-in members.
  • Speed does not improve: measure the enabled module on the affected template; image weight, hosting, theme code, and third-party scripts may dominate the result.
  • A scan reports an old infection: do not assume activation performs complete cleanup; isolate the site and obtain specialist remediation.
  • A feature is missing: check whether it belongs to the core plugin, Boost, Protect, Stats, or a paid bundle, then compare the current plan table.
  • Costs change at renewal: record the introductory term, currency, billing interval, renewal price, and refund deadline before completing checkout.
