Yes. Treat Jetpack Joyride music as copyrighted. Halfbrick credits audio designer Cedar Jones with writing the game’s theme, and Apple Music lists the original soundtrack under Halfbrick. That supports treating the music as protected, but the available sources do not establish the rights chain for every track or recording. Listening access is not permission to add a track to a separate video.
Why Jetpack Joyride music should be treated as copyrighted
Copyright can protect both a musical composition and its sound recording. Can you use the music in a YouTube video?
Not simply because you own the game, can stream or download a soundtrack, or credit Halfbrick. A video that pairs music with images generally involves a separate use of the work. Before publishing, seek permission or a license that covers your planned use, or make sure a copyright exception genuinely applies where you live. Fair use in the United States is case-specific
U.S. fair use is assessed through four factors: the purpose and character of the use, the nature of the copyrighted work, the amount and substantiality used, and the effect on the work’s potential market. Commentary, criticism, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research can be relevant purposes, but describing a video with one of those labels does not automatically make its use fair. The Copyright Office says the circumstances as a whole control, including the qualitative importance of what was used—not just its length. A Content ID claim is not a court ruling
YouTube’s automated Content ID system can identify music and generate a claim even when a video uses only a few seconds. The system does not decide whether a use is fair use; platform enforcement and a legal determination are separate questions. - Identify the exact track and recording. A soundtrack listing or game audio may not establish who controls every relevant right.
- Get written permission or a suitable license. Confirm that it covers synchronization in your video, the platform, and any monetization you plan.
- If relying on an exception, assess the law where you are. In the United States, weigh all four fair-use factors rather than relying on a fixed duration or a disclaimer.
- Review the platform’s terms and prepare for claims. Follow the license conditions and understand that automated matching may still flag the upload.
